You will need

  • Decide whether everyone will play on PC or include console players
  • Identify the mod and release your group wants
  • Estimate how many players will be online together
  • Keep a separate copy of any world you already care about

A host can provide a mod folder or installer, but the exact mod release, game build, client requirements and server controls determine whether your group can use it. Before renting a 7 Days to Die server with mods, check those details with the mod author and provider; a catalog listing alone does not prove compatibility. For a first-hour walkthrough of the version, player, log and backup controls themselves, see our 7 Days to Die server control panel checklist.

Start with the exact mod release and game branch#

Write down the mod’s release number and the game build it supports before comparing plans. The Fun Pimps released V3.3.0 Stable on October 5, 2026. In the Steam dedicated-server branch snapshot checked October 10, public, v3.3.0 and latest_experimental all pointed to build 25661908; the Experimental label did not identify a newer build in that snapshot. Recheck the branch table before ordering because it can change.

Older overhaul releases may target a branch that is no longer the default. Ask the provider to name the exact server build it can select, then compare it with the mod author’s current release notes. A host page that says “latest” or lists a mod name does not establish that the listed files load on V3.3. The official V3.3.0 Stable notes are the release reference; do not rely on setup copy written for an earlier stable branch.

Find out who must install the files#

Ask whether the mod changes only server behavior or requires every player to install the same files. That requirement belongs to the mod author. The Fun Pimps’ Mod Use guidance says third-party mod issues should go to their creators and warns that disabling a mod to diagnose a world can corrupt an existing save. Treat “one click” as an installation method, not a compatibility guarantee.

For a client-required mod, check the author’s instructions for the game branch, dependencies, anti-cheat setting and client launch requirements. Make sure each player can install the same release before the group starts a long-running world. For upload and troubleshooting steps, use our 7 Days to Die server mod installation guide instead of following a setup video for an older build.

Check the host’s branch and update controls#

The provider should tell you which game branch it runs and how updates are applied. If an overhaul targets an older branch, ask whether you can select that exact version and pause automatic updates long enough to coordinate the server and every client. Also ask what happens when the host updates the game before the mod author publishes a compatible release.

Game Hosting’s 7 Days to Die plans and panel list a version selector and a SandboxCode editor. Those are documented controls; they do not mean a named mod has been tested on every branch. Avoid copying old serverconfig.xml property lists as if they described current settings: current SandboxCode controls and branch behavior should be checked against the game version you intend to run.

Choose between mods and console crossplay#

Decide whether your group needs mods or console crossplay before renting. The current supported crossplay setup covers PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; it is separate from the 2016 Xbox One and PS4 release. The official dedicated-server cross-platform requirements require a public server, crossplay enabled, EAC enabled, IgnoreEOSSanctions=false and no more than 8 players.

Group setup What to confirm
PC group using mods Exact game branch, mod release, client files and the author’s EAC requirements
PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S crossplay Vanilla server, public listing, EAC on, IgnoreEOSSanctions=false, and a maximum of 8 players
Xbox One or PS4 from the 2016 release Treat it as a separate edition; do not assume it joins the current crossplay server

The modded PC route and current console crossplay are different setups. Do not plan a console group around a modded server, or turn off EAC for a mod without checking that the whole group is choosing PC-only play.

Compare one-click installers with file access#

Game Hosting may fit buyers who want a published memory amount and in-panel version, SandboxCode and archive-upload controls. Its public 8 GB plan is $15.99 per month; the panel can unpack an archive into /Mods, and the plan includes three free backup slots. The product’s only one-click 7DTD mod is War3zuk AIO, a third-party mod by War3zuk. The integration is pinned to V3.2.0, needs EAC off, matching client files, a new save and at least 12 GB. It is not evidence of V3.3 compatibility, and we do not offer one-click Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy or Rebirth.

Other hosts currently advertise broader one-click catalogs. For example, 7D2D.net lists Darkness Falls, War3zuk, Asylum and Undead Legacy; Host Havoc, BisectHosting and PingPerfect also advertise mod or overhaul installers. These are dated vendor claims, not successful V3.3 load tests. Some plans are sold by slots and do not publish memory by tier, so do not compare a slot count directly with an 8 GB plan. Ask each provider which mod release and game build its installer supplies, whether client files are required, and what resources the exact plan includes.

Buying priority Verify before choosing
One-click convenience Exact mod release, target game build, dependencies and whether the installer is currently maintained
Manual file control Archive upload/extraction path, access to logs, restart behavior and a way to revert a failed upload
Published resources RAM and CPU for the exact plan; player slots alone do not identify memory
Version flexibility Branch selection, update timing and whether the server can stay on the required build

Get the answer for the plan you will actually rent, not for the provider’s whole fleet. Ask for the included memory, CPU allocation, billing term, backup count and retention in writing. If a seller quotes only player slots, treat that as a player allowance; it does not tell you how much RAM the server receives. If a plan lists memory, it still does not predict performance for your map, mod or player activity. This makes a modest, disclosed plan easier to compare than an unexplained “unlimited” resource claim, while leaving workload fit to be checked with your actual group.

Separate technical support from mod-author support too. A host can explain its branch selector, file access, backup controls and restart process. The mod author is the source for supported game builds, dependencies and client files. Ask the host which of those operational steps it can help with, and ask the author which release matches the branch. An installer listing answers neither question by itself.

Match the plan to the overhaul and protect the save#

There is no reliable RAM number for every overhaul and player count. Mod size, world settings, concurrent players and other server activity can change resource use, so ask for the memory and CPU allocation of the exact plan and treat any general recommendation as a starting point rather than a performance promise. A host’s plan specification is not a benchmark of your particular modded world.

Before changing branches, adding an overhaul or removing files, keep a copy of the world outside the server account. Ask how to download it and what backup retention applies to the selected plan. Test changes on a copy and follow the mod author’s save instructions. We have not tested migration, restoration or a V3.3 mod load for this guide, so no provider should be assumed to preserve a save across those changes.

If you are still comparing broader provider terms, our 7 Days to Die hosting checklist covers the general host choice. This page focuses on the extra mod and branch checks that belong before checkout.

Questions to ask before checkout#

Send the provider and mod author the same short checklist:

  • Which exact server build and mod release are supported together today?
  • Does every player need matching client files, dependencies or EAC settings?
  • Can I select the required branch and control when updates apply?
  • What RAM and CPU does this exact plan include, and how are backups retained?
  • If the mod fails after an update, can I download the world and restore a separate copy?

Keep their answers with the world’s version and mod list. If the versions do not match or the provider cannot identify its plan resources, wait to start the long-term save until those details are clear.

For a new world, confirm the required branch and mod release before friends create characters or settle a base. For an existing save, do not use the only copy to discover whether an overhaul or branch change works. The safest decision can be to keep the current world vanilla and test the mod on a separate disposable world until its author’s requirements and the provider’s controls line up.

Frequently asked questions#

Can you play 7 Days to Die online with mods?

Yes, when the server and players follow the same mod author’s version and installation requirements. Check the exact game build first.

Do my friends need the mods to join a modded server?

Some mods are server-side; others require each player to install matching files. Follow the author’s instructions for that release.

Can console players join a modded server?

The current PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S crossplay setup is vanilla and supports at most 8 players. Choose that path or a modded PC server before the group starts.

Quick answers

Can you play 7 Days to Die online with mods?

Yes, if the server and every required client use compatible game and mod versions; the mod author sets those requirements.

Do my friends need the mods to join a modded server?

It depends on the mod: some changes are server-side, while others require matching files on each player’s PC.

Can console players join a modded 7 Days to Die server?

Current PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S crossplay uses a public vanilla server; mods are not part of that supported setup.
