How much memory does a Vintage Story server need?
In our tests Vintage Story 1.22 used about 1.2 GB with no mods, 2.7 GB with the 50 most installed mods and 4.2 GB with 110, before anyone explored; players who travel far load more of the world. Squad (4 GB): a few friends with the base game or a light mod list. Party (8 GB): a bigger group or 50+ mods. Clan (12 GB): a community server with a long mod list. If a server ever runs out of memory, we stop it before it can damage your world and the panel tells you what to change. Move up a plan without losing anything.
How do my friends and I get in?
Vintage Story keeps new servers on a whitelist. Type your Vintage Story name in the panel once: your account goes on the whitelist and becomes admin. Add each friend’s name in Players, or turn the whitelist off in Settings. Then everyone adds the server under Multiplayer with the address from your panel.
Can I set up the world the way I want?
Yes. Create a new world from the panel with one of the game’s presets and change any of its 64 world options and the seed: temporal storms, climate, world size, creature difficulty and more. Your current world is kept, and you can switch between worlds later.
How do mods work?
Search mods.vintagestory.at from your panel and add a mod in one click. On the next start the server downloads the newest release for your game version, with every mod it needs, or the version you pin. Each mod shows its author and links to its page. When a friend joins, the game offers to download the server’s mods for them. The panel also warns you when the author retracts the version you have, or a newer one is out.
What happens when Vintage Story updates?
New patches (1.22.7 to 1.22.8) install on the next restart, so the server stays on the version your friends’ games update to. A new major version (1.22 to 1.23) needs every player to update and breaks many mods, so it waits until you pick it in Settings. Your worlds are copied first either way.
Is there a map of our world?
Yes. Your panel draws your world the way the in-game map shows it, with traders and translocators, and coordinates that count from spawn like the game’s. Update it after a trip; it takes from seconds to a few minutes and players can keep playing. Drawn by WebCartographer, a public mod by Th3Dilli (MIT), which the panel installs for you.
How do scheduled restarts work?
One click sets a daily restart at 5:00 that waits until nobody is on (3 hours at most). Timed restarts count down in the game chat from up to 30 minutes, and the server saves first.
Can I kick, ban or make someone admin?
Yes, from Players: kick, ban, unban, make admin, and add or remove names on the whitelist. The game checks each name with Vintage Story’s account service, so typos are caught.
Can I bring my world or move from another host?
Yes. Upload your .vcdbs world file to data/Saves in Files and load it in World, or move for free: open a support ticket with your world, from %APPDATA%\VintagestoryData\Saves on Windows, or your old host’s login details, which we delete as soon as the move is done. We load it on your server and tell you when it is ready.
Why can’t my friends connect?
Usually a name that isn’t on the whitelist or a different game version (1.21 can’t join 1.22). The panel’s console says in plain words when someone isn’t on the whitelist, typed a wrong password, is banned, has an expired login or found the server full. The port is already open.
Are backups included?
Yes, for free. Every server has three backup slots with your worlds, settings, player lists and mod list (the game and mods download again, so backups stay small). Take one before a big change, or schedule one every night. Restore, download or lock any backup in one click.
