Palworld More Than 4 Players? Co-op Cap and Your Options
Palworld co-op supports four people total. See what an unsupported save edit means and which supported options let a fifth player join.
You will need
- The platforms each friend uses
- A separate copy of the current world save before any experiment
- Agreement on who will operate a dedicated server if your group chooses one
If you want to play Palworld with more than 4 players without a dedicated server, the supported invite-code answer is no: co-op allows four people total, including the host. A recent Steam player reports getting a fifth person into a co-op world after editing its save, but Pocketpair does not document that method and it has not been verified here. This guide separates the official limit from that experiment, then helps you choose a route that fits your group without promising the edit will work.
Can you play Palworld with more than 4 players?#
Not through supported invite-code co-op. Palworld’s current Steam listing describes co-op for four players and dedicated-server play for 32. In co-op, those four include the person hosting from their game. The host shares the current invite code; there is no fifth invite slot to unlock in the normal menu.
That distinction matters when a group is already playing together. A fifth friend can take turns with one of the four, but the group cannot all join the same supported co-op session at once. A new code, a different guild, or turning on Crossplay does not change the number. For the host-online rule and the rest of the invite-code flow, see our guide to Palworld co-op explained.
A dedicated server is a separate mode, not a larger co-op lobby. It runs outside one player’s game session and is the documented route for a group that needs more than four people in the same world. That can be a server a friend operates or a remote service; “dedicated” does not automatically mean you have to rent one.
Separate the co-op cap from the dedicated-server limit#
The settings names in search results can be misleading. Pocketpair’s server configuration reference documents ServerPlayerMaxNum as a dedicated-server setting. Changing that value does not expand an invite-code world hosted from a player’s game.
The CoopPlayerMaxNum value appears in copied Palworld settings lists, but a dedicated-server config is not a verified control for invite-code co-op. Pocketpair’s current configuration reference documents ServerPlayerMaxNum for dedicated servers and does not list CoopPlayerMaxNum as a current server option. Do not copy a server’s player-limit line into a co-op save and assume it changes the session.
If you only need to know which option is meant for which mode, use this split:
| Where the world runs | Relevant limit | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| Invite-code co-op | 4 players total | The friend hosting the game plus three others |
| Dedicated server | 32 in the Steam listing; server setting can be configured | A separate server process, with its own access and operating requirements |
Those are published mode limits, not performance guarantees. A configured server limit does not show that a particular machine, save, or evening’s activity will run well at that count. For the broader options and setup routes, start with the dedicated-server guide.
Treat the save-edit workaround as experimental#
One 1.0-era Steam player report says changing CoopPlayerMaxNum inside a co-op world’s WorldOption.sav allowed five people to join. That is a useful lead, not an official feature or a current, repeatable test. Other players in the discussion report the same approach; none of those posts establishes compatibility across updates, storefronts, or every save.
The report describes editing a world save, not installing a current player-limit mod. I could not verify a maintained mod with current compatibility evidence that raises the co-op player count.
If you still want to investigate the save edit, protect the world first. Keep the original untouched, work on a separate copy, and do not upload a live save to a third-party editor just to change one value. Start the copied world with the intended host, invite the other players, and confirm that all five can enter and play before your group treats it as the new world. If the copy fails to load or the fifth player cannot join, stop there and return to the original. That check is a precaution for an unsupported experiment, not proof that the edit is safe or reliable.
This option also has a narrow audience: the report concerns Steam co-op. It does not establish that the same edit works for Xbox or PS5 players, or that it gives consoles a way to join an invite-code session. For a group that needs a dependable supported path, plan around a dedicated server instead.
Compare the practical ways to add a fifth player#
If your group wants five people online together without making one friend maintain a home server, we recommend Game Hosting’s Palworld service. Its integrated game panel keeps server settings and restarts together, and each plan includes three free backup slots. Those features reduce routine operator work; they do not change co-op’s four-player limit or guarantee that every save will run at a particular capacity.
| Route | Does it put five in the same world? | Who handles the work? | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep invite-code co-op | No; four can join at once | The host launches the game and shares the current code | No separate server to operate, but the fifth person must wait or take a turn |
| Experiment on a copied save | Maybe; one Steam player reports five | The group owns the save edit, compatibility checks, and recovery copy | Unsupported and unverified; keep the original world safe |
| Self-host a dedicated server | It is the documented mode for groups above four | A friend manages the server machine, updates, network access, and backups | No hosting subscription, but the operator owns setup and upkeep |
| Use managed game hosting | It is a dedicated-server route | The provider handles the service and supplies a game panel | Ongoing subscription; verify the exact platform join path before moving |
These are routes with different responsibilities, not measured setup-time rankings. A friend who already operates a server may prefer the self-hosted option. If your group chooses a Windows home server, follow the Windows setup guide for the actual installation and network checks. If you would rather have someone else handle the server environment, review the managed plan and its platform controls before you move your world.
Check platform access before changing the world#
Mixed platforms can play together when the supported Crossplay settings are enabled, but the join method depends on the mode. An invite-code world remains a co-op session with the four-person total. Raising a save field in a Steam player’s report does not prove that Xbox or PS5 players can join that edited session.
For a dedicated server, Pocketpair’s community-server instructions explain the listing route Xbox and PS5 players need. They join through the in-game community list; they do not use the PC direct-address field. Steam and Mac players have a different connection flow. Check that the server is configured for the platforms your friends actually use before you spend time moving a save.
This is why “we all play on PC” is not specific enough when someone uses the Microsoft Store version, and why a console group should confirm the community-server listing. Our co-op-to-server decision guide explains the trade-offs; keep the exact platform steps tied to the route you picked.
Move the co-op world only after you choose a route#
You do not have to abandon the current world to add a dedicated server. But copying a save and converting it are separate tasks, and a server’s player count does not guarantee that the destination contains the same host character, bases, or progress.
Before moving anything, retain an untouched copy of the current world and choose the server operator. Then follow the dedicated co-op save transfer guide for the files and host-character handling. Keep the source until the destination starts and the players who own characters have checked their progress. If those checks fail, stop using the new copy and return to the preserved source rather than overwriting it again.
The save-edit experiment and migration solve different problems. Editing a copied co-op world is an attempt to fit another person into the same peer-hosted session. Transferring the world changes where it runs. A migration can still leave the group on a dedicated server; it is not a way to keep the old invite-code setup while adding a supported fifth slot.
Choose the route your group can keep operating#
Stay with co-op if four people or fewer can play at the same time and the host is happy to be online. If a fifth person is a one-night exception, taking turns is the only supported option that avoids setting up another mode. If all five need to play together, decide whether everyone is comfortable testing an unsupported save edit on a copy before relying on it.
Choose a dedicated server when five or more people need supported simultaneous access, when the world should be available outside the host’s game session, or when console players need the community-server path. A friend can run it if they are willing to manage the machine and connection. If nobody wants those chores, a managed server moves that work into a service and panel, but remains a separate dedicated-server world.
The useful decision is not whether “server” sounds complicated. It is who will own the world, updates, network access and backups. Keep the current co-op save safe while you decide; then either stay within its four-person limit, test a copy with no guarantee, or move deliberately to a supported server route.
Quick answers
Can you play Palworld with more than 4 players?
Supported invite-code co-op has a four-player total limit. Some Steam players report editing a save option to raise it, but Pocketpair does not document that as a supported method and it has not been verified here.
How many players can play Palworld co-op?
Four people total can join a co-op world, including the friend hosting it.
Do you need a dedicated server for 5 players in Palworld?
A dedicated server is the documented route for five simultaneous players. A community save edit has a user-reported result, but it is experimental and not an official workaround.
Does a Palworld mod increase the co-op player limit?
I could not verify a current compatible mod that raises the co-op cap. The recent workaround people describe is a save edit, which is different from a mod.
