Palworld Server Config: Current Defaults and Limits
Find the active Palworld server config, copy the current official defaults, and check which setting limits Pocketpair actually documents.
You will need
- Access to the dedicated server installation or its hosting panel
- A backup before editing the active configuration
The current Palworld server config starts with the OptionSettings line shipped in your dedicated-server package. The active file belongs under the server’s saved configuration folder; DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini is only a template. Pocketpair’s current reference documents exact limits for some keys, but not every accepted type or range. This page records what the official docs say and what the current Windows server package ships, so you can check a value without mistaking an example for a universal rule. If you need plain-English advice on which settings to change, see our Palworld server settings guide.
Find the active Palworld server config#
Edit PalWorldSettings.ini under the active server’s Saved/Config directory. The folder appears after the dedicated server starts for the first time. The official documentation lists these paths relative to the server installation:
| Server environment | Active configuration |
|---|---|
| Windows dedicated server | Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini |
| Linux dedicated server | Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini |
| Official Docker image | ./Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini inside the persisted Saved directory |
A panel may expose the same settings as form fields or write the file for you. In that case, treat the panel as the editor and confirm its saved value after applying a change. The path still helps when you are inspecting a backup or diagnosing a server that reads a different copy.
The official configuration guide describes the Windows and Linux paths and says the directories are created after startup. The official Docker repository documents persistence of the server’s Saved directory. A third-party container may map it elsewhere, so follow that image’s volume configuration instead of assuming the official layout.
Tell the shipped template from the live config#
DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini provides a sample default line. Copy the OptionSettings line from that template into the active PalWorldSettings.ini, then edit the active file. Pocketpair explicitly warns that changing the template itself does not affect the server’s live settings.
That distinction matters after an update or reinstall: a template can exist beside the server while the process loads a separate file under Saved/Config. If you change the wrong one, the server can restart normally and keep using its previous values. Before editing, make a copy of the active file and confirm which installation directory the running process uses.
The full settings line below came from the official free Palworld Dedicated Server package, AppID 2394010, downloaded anonymously on October 11, 2026. Steam AppInfo identified Windows public build 25247047; the captured template file’s SHA-256 was 062B57202ED841DE7227108C2EBB3E03E9A420E51C828859C3E314F3FE0A4D3C. These values describe that shipped template, not a runtime test or a guarantee about future builds. Compare with the template bundled with your installed version before copying defaults.

The line above is long because the game stores the world options together. Selected values worth spotting are shown below. “Template value” means the value present in the captured official package; it does not assert that Pocketpair documents a range or that the setting is editable through every hosting panel.
| Setting | Captured template value | What the official reference confirms |
|---|---|---|
DeathPenalty |
Item |
The docs list None, Item, ItemAndEquipment, and All as options. |
PalEggDefaultHatchingTime |
1.000000 |
The template value is in hours for Huge Egg incubation; use the current docs for the setting description. |
BaseCampMaxNumInGuild |
4 |
Default 4; documented maximum 10. Raising it increases processing load. |
BaseCampWorkerMaxNum |
15 |
The docs publish a maximum of 50; they do not give a default there. |
MaxBuildingLimitNum |
0 |
The docs say 0 means unlimited. |
ServerReplicatePawnCullDistance |
15000.000000 |
The docs publish a range of 5000–15000 cm. |
CrossplayPlatforms |
(Steam,Xbox,PS5,Mac) |
The docs show the same default platform list. |
LogFormatType |
Text |
The documented choices are Text and Json. |
FishingDifficultyRate |
1.000000 |
The docs publish a range of 0.1–1.0. |
Pocketpair’s live parameter reference groups keys under Performance, Server Management, Features, and Game Balances. It documents a selected set of defaults, options, or boundaries. A template value is useful evidence for what that package ships, while an official range is evidence about values the docs permit. Those are different kinds of evidence; the table keeps them separate.
Check which setting limits are actually documented#
Do not fill gaps in the official table with a range copied from an old blog or an early-access INI. Pocketpair publishes a maximum for BaseCampWorkerMaxNum but not its default on that page. It specifies 0 as unlimited for MaxBuildingLimitNum, but does not give a complete numeric interval. For most rate fields, the current docs do not list a universal minimum or maximum.
Use the following rule when you need a value:
- Check the key’s current entry in the official parameter reference.
- If the entry lists a default or range, use that exact statement and keep its unit.
- If there is no documented bound, label it unknown instead of estimating one from another setting.
- Check the template that shipped with your server build for the default line.
For example, the official docs give ServerReplicatePawnCullDistance a range in centimeters. Do not convert an old blog’s number into a universal preset without checking its units and version. Likewise, “maximum 50” for workers is not proof that every value from 0 through 50 behaves as expected. The server executable was not run during this capture, so the package inspection confirms the template text only.
Separate INI keys from startup arguments#
The Palworld server config is not the only place that controls the dedicated server. The official server arguments reference documents command-line flags for process-level choices. For example, -port=8211 changes the listening port, -players=32 sets a player maximum, and -publiclobby enables a public lobby. -publicport is a separate advertised port argument.
These flags do not belong inside the OptionSettings=(...) list. Use the process command, service configuration, container command, or host panel field for arguments. A managed control panel may expose both categories, but the interface should label where each value is stored. If a setting is missing from the INI form, check the arguments page or your host’s current documentation before inventing an INI key.
The Windows setup walkthrough shows where the dedicated-server files first appear. For the save directory beside your config, see the Palworld save-file location guide.
Avoid treating old INI keys as confirmed settings#
An installed template may contain a line or key that is absent from Pocketpair’s current parameter index. In the captured build, the template includes Difficulty, WorkSpeedRate, and AutoSaveSpan; the current official index does not list them. Their presence in that sample is not enough to claim current support, explain their effect, or promise that changing them works.
Community references may preserve settings from earlier versions or give behavior that the current official docs do not establish. Before using one, check the key against your installed build and the current Pocketpair reference. If neither confirms the key’s meaning, leave it unchanged and avoid describing it as a supported control. This is especially important when copying a whole line: an unverified key can obscure the one change you meant to make.
Make a small, reversible config edit#
When you only need to change one documented setting, preserve the rest of the line. The process is the same whether you edit from a shell or download the file from a control panel:
- Stop the server cleanly and back up the active
PalWorldSettings.ini. - Find the existing key inside
OptionSettings=(...)and change only its value. - Keep the commas, parentheses, key spelling, and value format intact.
- Save the file, start the server, and check the world and log for the expected change.
- If the server resets the value or reports a parse problem, restore the backup and check that you edited the active path.
The official documentation is the source for recognized parameter names and documented values; it does not publish a complete parser specification for every character encoding, quoting style, or key range. Avoid claiming that a particular BOM or line ending always breaks the file without a reproduction on the same build. If the line is difficult to edit safely, our plain-English settings guide explains the practical choices before you touch it. A rented server’s Palworld panel can provide a managed way to run the world and adjust documented settings; see the Palworld hosting page for the current panel details.
Use the reference without guessing#
For defaults, start with the template from your installed dedicated-server build. For allowed values and limits, use the individual entries in Pocketpair’s current reference. When an entry is silent, treat the range or behavior as unknown. Keep startup arguments separate from INI settings and edit the active file, not the sample template.
If you are deciding what a value should be, continue to the settings guide. If the config lives next to a save you need to move or back up, use the save-file path reference. For exact setup steps on Windows, follow the dedicated-server setup guide.
Quick answers
Where is the Palworld server config file?
The active file is Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini on Windows or Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini on Linux, relative to the server directory.
Is DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini the file I should edit?
No. It is the shipped template. Copy its settings into the active PalWorldSettings.ini; editing the template by itself does not change a running server.
Does Pocketpair publish a valid range for every Palworld setting?
No. The official reference documents limits for selected settings only. Treat other bounds as unknown unless the current official docs or your installed build confirms them.
What is the current default DeathPenalty value?
The official dedicated-server template retrieved for Windows public build 25247047 contains DeathPenalty=Item. Check the template shipped with your own server build before relying on a default.
