Valheim World Reset: Start Fresh Without Losing Your Save

A Valheim world reset does not have to delete your old campaign. Start a separately named world, agree on characters and keep a route back.

You will need

  • Administrator access to the dedicated server or its world controls
  • Agreement from the crew about whether to reuse existing characters
  • A separate copy of the current world before changing the active campaign

A Valheim world reset does not need to erase your current campaign. Give the new map a different world name, preserve the existing save, and agree whether the crew is reusing characters or starting those over too. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide says a new -world name creates a world, while an existing name selects that saved world. This guide walks through a cautious switch and a way back, without treating a progression-key change as a terrain reset.

Agree what “starting fresh” means for your crew#

First decide which parts of the campaign you want to leave behind. A world holds its explored terrain, buildings and shared progression. A character carries that player’s own progress and equipment. Starting a new world does not automatically mean everyone must make a new character: Iron Gate says you can take an older character into a new world.

That choice changes the feel of the first session. Reusing characters lets experienced players help friends and explore sooner, but they arrive with skills and gear from the older campaign. New characters make a more even start, but each player must create one and leave the old character untouched if they might return later. Neither choice is a server reset setting. It is a rule the group agrees to follow.

Before the change, write down:

Decision Reuse characters Fresh characters
Skills and inventory Each player brings their existing character progress and carried items Each player creates a separate character for this campaign
Early-game balance Gear can shorten the opening progression Everyone begins without carried equipment
Returning later Players can revisit the old world with that character Keep old and new characters clearly named so nobody deletes the wrong one

Ask every player to confirm the rule before the new world opens. Valheim characters can be used across worlds, so a server-side world change is not a way to reset someone’s personal inventory. Iron Gate confirms that you can start a new world with an older character; keep each player’s own character backup separate from the world copy.

Preserve the old campaign before you switch#

Make a recovery copy before changing the server’s active world. Stop the server with its normal clean-shutdown method, then use your current backup or world-management route to preserve the complete existing save outside the active location. Label the copy with the old world name and date so another admin can recognize it later.

Do not make a partial copy while the world is still being written. The official dedicated-server guide recommends stopping with CTRL+C in its command window; a hosting panel may have its own stop control. Wait until that control reports the process stopped before copying or switching anything. If the server is being updated at the same time, follow the separate safe update checklist and keep its pre-change copy intact.

This guide does not ask you to restore that copy or claim that a backup system will recover it. For a reset, the safer first move is to keep the old world available under its existing identity. If your backup flow has never been checked, treat that as unfinished work and do a separate restore rehearsal before relying on it.

Make your Valheim world reset reversible#

Use a new, memorable world name that is different from the current world’s exact name. The dedicated-server -world setting identifies the world save: the official manual says Valheim creates one when that name is new and loads the existing save when the name matches. Renaming or changing a seed is a different job; see the dedicated-server launch-argument reference for the exact role of -world and other startup options.

  1. Record the current world name

Read the active world name from the server’s existing launch configuration or world controls. Save it in the crew’s campaign notes exactly as shown, including capitalization and punctuation.

  2. Choose a new name

Pick a distinct name such as NorthshoreSeason2. Check that it is not already an existing world in the server’s save list. Do not delete or rename the old entry to make room.

  3. Select the new world

In the server’s world controls, create and select the new named world. If you manage the official dedicated server directly, set its -world value to the new name in your copied startup script, then launch it through your normal method.

The first successful start should generate the new save and bring the dedicated server online. That only confirms that the process loaded; it does not prove a player sees the expected terrain or can connect. Keep the original campaign saved and available while you check the new one in game.

Set the new campaign rules before everyone joins#

Agree on difficulty, world modifiers and any group rules before the first session. These choices shape the campaign but do not create a new world by themselves. Changing a progression key is not the same as generating new terrain, and selecting a preset can override modifiers set before it. Review Valheim’s dedicated-server modifier options if the admin needs the argument order and current supported options.

Keep the first change small: select the intended world, set only the modifiers the group chose, then start the server and inspect its log for startup errors. Hammer mode can block some achievements, according to Iron Gate’s Valheim 1.0 FAQ; check the current rules before the first session if achievements matter to your crew. Avoid mixing a world change with unrelated mod installs or a server update. If something goes wrong, you want to know which change to reverse.

For a vanilla group, do not add command-line switches just because an old guide recommends them. Check the current manual shipped with the server build before copying a command, especially after a major game update.

Verify the new terrain and have a player reconnect#

Before inviting the whole crew, confirm the server started with the new name and ask one player to join using the same route they normally use. Have them verify that the character spawn and nearby terrain belong to the new campaign, make one harmless change, leave, and reconnect to check that it persists. This player check matters: server logs can confirm that a process connected, but they cannot show what a player sees or prove that a remote friend can join.

In an isolated rehearsal for this guide, the Valheim 1.0.17 dedicated-server build generated a new named world and later loaded the preserved test world again. The test confirmed server-side world creation and switching; it did not include a licensed game client or remote join. Run the in-game check on your own setup before posting a join code or calling the campaign ready.

If the new world does not appear, stop before deleting files. Recheck the selected name and save location, then compare the server’s startup log with the path your server actually uses. A panel, container and a direct Windows or Linux process may store worlds in different configured locations. The server launch-argument reference explains what the game’s -savedir option controls; a container or provider can add another storage layer.

Keep a clear route back to the archived world#

Write down the old world name, where its preserved copy lives, who can select it, and what the crew should expect when returning. To switch back, stop the active server cleanly, select the old world by its recorded name, start it, and ask a player who knows the old base to confirm that the expected build and progression load. Do not test this on the only copy.

Keep the old and new campaign identities distinct in your notes. If you are using direct startup arguments, change only the -world selection and leave unrelated settings alone. If you manage several worlds through a panel, inspect its world list and confirm the active marker before starting the server. Record the new active name after each switch.

If your group would rather not maintain the server process and wants world controls alongside its backups, compare the current Game Hosting Valheim page. Its panel provides world creation, import, switching and download controls, plus three free backup slots; those features do not replace keeping your own copy or checking that a player can join. Running the dedicated server yourself is still a sensible free option when someone in the crew is happy to maintain it.

Quest complete

Before you invite your friends, check that the intended world loaded and that each player can connect. If those checks pass, you're ready for a session; if you'd rather not keep a PC on, that's what we're here for.

Quick answers

Can we reset the world but keep our characters?

Yes. Valheim lets you start a new world with an older character. Decide as a group whether players will bring their gear and skills or create new characters for a clean start.

Does clearing global keys regenerate the terrain?

No. Progression keys and world terrain are different things. To generate a fresh map, select a world name that does not already exist.

Can we return to the old world later?

Yes, if you keep its save and select its original world name again. Stop the server cleanly before switching, then have a player confirm the expected base and progress loaded.
