Valheim Dedicated Server Not Starting? Fix the First Error
A Valheim dedicated server not starting? Trace the first real error, check installed files and launch arguments, then test with a disposable world.
You will need
- Access to the server start script, service or hosting panel
- The first startup error and the lines that follow it
- A copy or disposable world before changing save settings
A Valheim dedicated server not starting usually needs one thing first: the first actionable error from the process that launched it. Keep the console open, note whether the server reaches Game server connected, and preserve the current world before changing a path or script. This checklist separates a missing install or library from a bad argument, a save-path issue, and a later connection problem. It does not assume that a server which starts can already be joined.
Why is my Valheim dedicated server not starting?#
Start from the earliest relevant line, not the last warning on screen. The error closest to the point where the process stops often gives you the next check; later errors may only follow from that first failure. If the window disappears, open the server’s install folder and run its existing start script from a terminal or command prompt so the output remains visible.
Record the full message, the time, the last line before the process exits, and whether a recent update, script edit, mod change, or world-path change came first. Do not post a password, public IP, join code, or private player ID with the log. If the process is still running, note that too: a quiet console is different from an exited process.
| What you see | What it establishes | Next check |
|---|---|---|
Game server connected |
Iron Gate’s guide calls this the ready-to-accept-connections milestone | If friends still cannot join, use the connection fix ladder to investigate the route separately |
Cannot connect to the Docker daemon |
The container did not start through Docker | Check whether the Docker daemon is running |
Docker socket permission denied |
The current user cannot access that daemon socket | Check the account’s Docker access with the machine administrator; do not run the game as root by default |
A missing library or GLIBC / GLIBCXX version message |
The runtime may not meet the server’s documented Linux library floor | Compare the exact requirement with the installed OS libraries before changing packages |
A DllNotFoundException or shader/audio warning |
A component reported a load problem; the line alone does not say whether the dedicated process failed | Read the next server-status lines and see whether the process reaches its ready milestone |
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide lists the Docker-daemon and socket-permission errors as examples, and says Game server connected means the server is up and ready to accept connections. That is a process check, not a player-join test. Keep that distinction clear before changing router settings.
Check that the dedicated-server files and runtime match#
Confirm that the shortcut, panel or service launches the dedicated-server installation you actually updated. Steam’s Library → Tools entry is named Valheim Dedicated Server. Iron Gate’s guide identifies start_headless_server.bat on Windows and start_server.sh on Linux; it recommends editing a copy because Steam resets the original script during updates. If a manager points at an old folder or a removed executable, update that path before reinstalling anything.
On Linux, the official guide names libatomic1, libpulse-dev and libpulse0 as additional packages. It lists minimum GLIBC_2.29 and GLIBCXX_3.4.26 versions and suggests Docker as an alternative when the host has older libraries. Check the exact missing symbol or version in the first failure. Installing unrelated packages or changing permissions broadly makes the diagnosis harder.
For Docker, verify the daemon first, then the invoking account’s access, and only then the image or container command. Iron Gate’s bundled Docker helper builds its container environment on first use; the guide says that bootstrap can take a few minutes. A container that has not finished building is not the same as a Valheim process crash. Use the official Docker startup instructions for that wrapper rather than mixing its variables with native server arguments.
Inspect the active script and launch arguments#
The file on disk is not always the file that starts the server. Check the command in the panel, scheduled task, service unit, shortcut or copied script. Confirm its working folder and the exact executable path. Then compare its Valheim arguments with the installed launch-argument reference, which separates native flags from examples and wrapper settings.
Iron Gate documents -name, -port, -world, -password and -savedir among the server arguments. It says the original Linux and Windows scripts are reset by Steam updates, and recommends keeping a configured copy. Keep quoted names and paths together, and check that the script has not picked up a stale example value. Do not paste a full command with a real password into a support ticket or public issue.
Open the exact start command
In your panel or service, inspect the command and working directory used for the current process. For Steam’s local installation, use Library → Tools → Valheim Dedicated Server → Manage → Browse local files. On Linux, inspect the copy of
start_server.shthat the service invokes.Compare only the arguments that changed
Check the world name, save-directory override, selected backend, port and password source against the installed manual. Keep a private copy of the original values before editing.
Restart once and read from the top
Launch the same process and note whether the first error moved or disappeared. If nothing changed, restore the previous value before testing a different setting.
If the process reaches its ready milestone after correcting one setting, keep that change and record why it mattered. If it stops at the same first error, restore the setting and continue with the install, runtime or save-path branch instead of stacking edits.
Check ports only after the process stays up#
A port conflict or unreachable route can stop friends from joining even when the server process started. It does not explain every launch crash. First establish whether the server remains running and reports its ready milestone; then check the backend and network configuration that match the way your players connect.
The official manual says the Steam backend uses the configured port and the next port, with 2456–2457 as the default range. The crossplay backend uses a relay and does not require router port forwarding. Do not add a third port based on an old script comment or change the backend as a general startup fix. If the process is ready but invisible or unreachable, follow the connection guide rather than repeatedly restarting it.
Protect the existing world while checking its path#
Do not use your only world as a startup test. -world selects the world to create or load, and -savedir overrides the directory for worlds and permission files. A misspelled world name or a different save directory can make the server create a fresh world that looks like a lost save. It does not prove that the original files were deleted.
First stop the process cleanly, make a separate copy of the existing save, and confirm the copy contains the expected world files. Then use a new world name and an isolated save directory for the startup test. Keep the test server’s port and directory separate from a live process on the same machine. If the fresh world reaches Game server connected, the executable can start under those test conditions; it does not establish that the original world is healthy.
For the Linux server, the official guide lists ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim as the default save path and says -savedir can override it. Windows uses a different default. Check the installed manual and the effective account that runs the process; a service user can have a different home directory from your interactive login.
Test a clean server without mods or your live save#
Use a disposable world to separate a basic server startup from a mod, old configuration or existing save. Iron Gate says unofficial mods are used at the player’s own risk and may not stay compatible with newer game versions. That supports a controlled vanilla test; it does not prove that a particular mod caused your crash.
For a clean test, copy the start script, remove mod-loader hooks from that copy, choose a new world name and save directory, and keep the current world offline. Run one test at a time and save the output. If the clean process starts, add back the previous configuration one change at a time. If it still fails, keep the first error and check the executable, library versions and permissions instead of reinstalling the world.
Current-build check: On October 13, 2026, we installed the public Linux dedicated-server package and started its executable in an isolated container with a new world, no mods, -public 0, and no published host ports. It identified itself as l-1.0.17 (network version 40), reached Game server connected, and completed all five world-save stages after a controlled shutdown. A DllNotFoundException: libParty.so and graphics/audio warnings also appeared in that minimal container before the ready message. That observation applies only to this no-crossplay Linux container run; it is not a promise that the same line is harmless on another setup. We did not test a player join, Windows, mods or your existing world.
The official 1.0.17 notes are dated October 6, 2026 and describe save-chunk and item fixes, not a dedicated-server launch fix. If your crash began after a game update, compare the installed client and server versions and check the official news for newer notes. Do not assume an old crash report matches the current build.
Hand off routine process administration if it keeps interrupting play#
If a compatible vanilla process starts but maintaining the machine, settings, restarts and copies is the recurring problem, Game Hosting’s Valheim plans provide an integrated game panel, three free backup slots with scheduling and restore/download/locking controls, and included human game-specialist support. Those tools can reduce routine server administration; they cannot repair a bad local install, an incompatible mod, an unsupported runtime or a damaged world. Self-hosting remains a valid choice when you can maintain the process and its backups.
If the process starts and friends still cannot get in, continue with the connection fix ladder. If you are starting from a new machine, follow the Windows dedicated-server setup; for a specific flag, check the dedicated-server launch arguments. Change one thing, keep the world safe, and let the next log line decide the next step.
Quick answers
Why does my Valheim server window close immediately?
Read the first useful error in the console or log, then check whether the process actually exited. A window closing by itself is not enough to identify the cause; launch the script from its install folder so its output stays visible.
Can invalid arguments stop a Valheim server from starting?
They can send the process down the wrong path or prevent the intended world from loading. Compare the active script with the installed official manual and change one argument at a time.
Should I delete my Valheim world to test the server?
No. Keep the existing world untouched and test with a new name and separate save directory. Remove or restore an established save only after you have a verified backup and a specific recovery plan.
What does “Game server connected” mean in Valheim?
Iron Gate documents that line as the server-ready milestone. It confirms the process reached that stage; it does not prove that a player can join through your chosen network route.
