You will need

  • Arma Reforger on the platform you play
  • The stable or Experimental branch your group intends to use

Arma Reforger mods come from Bohemia Workshop, and the dedicated server tells the game which items players need. When someone joins, their client downloads the required items from the same Workshop. That works across supported platforms, with a few conditions: the server has to allow cross-platform play, each mod has to suit the player’s platform, and console players need enough room in their local Workshop library.

That model is simpler than manually installing the same files on every PC, but it does not make every mod compatible or every update painless. Here’s how the Workshop, server list and player download fit together, what the current console limits mean, and how to think about game and mod versions without mixing up Stable and Experimental.

Where Arma Reforger mods come from#

Arma Reforger’s community content lives in Bohemia Workshop, the game’s own catalogue. It is not Steam Workshop, even when you play on PC through Steam. A Steam Workshop ID or an Arma 3 installation guide will not give you the Reforger item a server needs.

Workshop is the public catalogue and delivery source. A creator publishes an item there; players can find and manage content through the game’s Workshop interface; and dedicated servers refer to the items they need using the server configuration. Those are connected parts of one system, but the Workshop page is not the server’s configuration file.

For a player, the useful first check is the item’s own Workshop page: confirm the current version and whether the creator describes support for the platform and game branch your group uses. Mods are user-created content, so a working Workshop listing is not a guarantee that an item will keep working after a game update. If an item is missing, private, outdated or incompatible, the server cannot make it available just by listing it.

What the server does with a mod list#

The server declares the required Workshop items in the game.mods list in its configuration. At startup it retrieves the listed items it needs; the configuration can also specify a version for a mod. If a version is not pinned, the server configuration reference says the latest Workshop version is used.

Stage What happens What it does not mean
Creator publishes The item is listed in Bohemia Workshop Every platform or game branch supports it
Server declares it game.mods names the required items and can pin versions The server copies mods from Steam Workshop
Player joins The game downloads and activates required items Every download will fit or succeed on every client

This is the mental model. The actual JSON, mod IDs, dependencies and restart checks are a separate task, covered in our step-by-step guide to adding mods to an Arma Reforger server. Keep changes to the list deliberate: if you remove an item or change a version, tell your group before the next session and confirm that the scenario still uses the content you expect.

The common misunderstanding is that a server’s mod list forces an item to work everywhere. It only tells clients what the server requires. Platform restrictions, local storage, a deleted Workshop item or a mod that has not caught up with the current game can still stop a player from joining.

What happens when a player joins#

Players do not need to separately subscribe to every required item before joining. The official Arma Reforger server configuration reference says clients automatically download and activate the server’s required mods as they connect.

The server and each player’s client keep their own copies. A server may already have downloaded an item at startup while a first-time player still has to fetch it. A large collection can therefore make that player’s first join take longer, even when the server is ready. Later joins depend on whether the client already has the required versions and whether the Workshop has changed them.

If one person cannot get past a mod download, check the item’s Workshop page and the player’s available space and game branch before changing the whole server list. Removing a required mod to get one player in changes the experience for everyone. For a planned change, check that the item is still available and compatible, make a backup before changing a live world, and tell players what to expect. A server cannot fix a failed Workshop download on a player’s console.

Can PC, Xbox, and PS5 play with mods together?#

They can play modded Reforger together when the server uses the documented all-platform crossplay mode and the required content works for the players’ platforms. Bohemia’s server configuration reference describes two valid choices: PC-only, or crossPlatform enabled for PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5. The cross-platform setting is off by default. This is not a menu of arbitrary platform pairs.

Platform Workshop support Local storage guidance
PC Reforger Workshop Check available disk space for the selected content
Xbox Reforger Workshop The local pool can grow from 1 GB up to 50 GB, depending on use
PlayStation 5 Added in update 1.4 Bohemia documents a 25 GB mod limit

Bohemia announced PS5 Workshop support in its 1.4 update notes, which also described modded cross-platform play. The Xbox 1.7.0.41 notes explain that local storage can expand with use up to 50 GB; it is not a promise that every player always has that much free space. The PS5 technical statement sets a 25 GB cap.

Think of those numbers as each player’s local library limit, not a server-side storage plan. A long-running server can accumulate a large collection while a console player has only part of that collection installed. Check the size and platform notes for the actual Workshop items your group wants. Do not assume a PC-only mod works on consoles, or that an available slot in the console library means an item is compatible.

Keep game and mod versions aligned#

Stable and Experimental are separate branches. As checked on October 8, 2026, Bohemia’s news page lists Stable 1.8.0.13 and Experimental 1.9.0.10, with the Experimental update announced for Steam and Xbox Experimental applications. A player on one branch should not expect to join a server on the other.

Game updates can also affect individual mods. Bohemia’s September 24 modding notes for 1.9 describe engine changes that may affect existing mods, including changes to wheeled-vehicle simulation. That is a reason to check relevant Workshop pages and creator updates; it is not evidence that every vehicle mod is broken.

Before a planned update, compare the server’s branch and version with the versions your players will run, then review the Workshop pages for the items your scenario depends on. If a specific mod has not been updated, ask its creator or test the change in a separate environment before replacing a working live list. Don’t switch a shared server to Experimental just because one Experimental mod update appeared; your group needs to make the branch change together.

Read mod-list numbers as a dated snapshot#

Modded servers are common in the Reforger community, but the useful numbers need their date and sample attached. A snapshot recorded on October 2, 2026 counted 4,780 servers in the observed list, including 4,416 community servers. Of those community servers, 3,910 listed mods, about 89% of that group. The same snapshot found 92% of observed community players on modded servers.

Measure from the Oct. 2 snapshot Result Scope
Community servers listing mods 3,910 of 4,416 (about 89%) One-time server-list snapshot
Community players on modded servers 92% Players visible in that snapshot
Median mod count 83 Detailed inspection of 260 servers
Median listed mod size 15.4 GiB Size sample of 242 servers

These counts come from the dated community server study published on October 2, 2026, not a permanent game rule or a current live census. The medians have smaller samples than the server count. Use them to understand why console storage and version coordination matter; don’t treat them as a target number of mods for your group or as a guarantee that today’s server list has the same mix.

Choose your next step for the server#

If you want to change a server’s required items, follow the Arma Reforger mod setup steps; they cover the IDs, dependencies and configuration details. If you’re still deciding whether to self-host or rent, our Arma Reforger hosting comparison lays out the options and the questions to check before choosing.

For a console group, first agree on Stable or Experimental, enable the server’s all-platform mode, and check every required Workshop item and its size. Make a backup before a mod-list or scenario change, and confirm you can recover it before applying a change to a world your group cares about. That small check is easier than asking everyone to rebuild a broken collection after game night.

Quick answers

Are there mods on Arma Reforger?

Yes. Arma Reforger uses Bohemia Workshop for community-made mods on supported platforms.

Do players have to download mods to join a modded server?

The game downloads and activates the server's required mods when a player joins, provided the items are available and compatible.

Can console players use mods on Arma Reforger servers?

Yes, Reforger supports modded cross-platform play, but the server must use cross-platform mode and each player needs compatible mods and enough local Workshop space.
