Hostinger Valheim Server: VPS vs Managed Hosting
Compare Hostinger’s Valheim Game Panel and manual VPS with managed hosting, including renewal cost, backups, updates and your ongoing admin work.
You will need
- Your crew’s player count, platforms and mod list
- The latest Hostinger quote and renewal date
- A disposable world for connection and backup checks
A Hostinger Valheim server can run through a manual Linux VPS or Hostinger’s Game Panel, which creates a Valheim instance for you. The panel gives you a game-level control surface; it does not make the VPS and its root-level controls disappear. If you want settings, scheduled backup controls and game-specialist help in one game-focused service, we recommend Game Hosting’s Valheim plans. Hostinger remains a sensible choice when you need root access, broad VPS control or multiple game instances. This guide compares the work each route leaves with your crew, the current billing terms and what to check before moving an established world.
Choose Hostinger’s manual or Game Panel route#
Hostinger offers two ways to get Valheim running on its VPS. Its current tutorial describes both a manual Linux setup and a graphical Game Panel flow that creates a Valheim instance. They are different workflows on VPS infrastructure, not “VPS versus no VPS.”
| Route | What the documentation shows | Who should own the remaining work |
|---|---|---|
| Manual VPS | Connect to the Linux server, install the dedicated server tools, configure the process and network, then maintain the files and service. | Someone comfortable managing the operating system and the Valheim process. |
| Game Panel | Open the panel, choose Create Instance, select Valheim, then set up the instance and connection details. | Someone still needs to own the VPS account, its operating-system controls and the world’s recovery plan. |
The graphical route can save you from typing every game-server command. Hostinger’s guide says to choose the Valheim instance from a menu and then use the panel for settings. That is useful automation. It does not establish that every Linux update, firewall decision, failed service or world recovery is handled for you.
For a small crew that wants to leave the host PC out of the routine, compare the Valheim hosting buyer guide before paying. It helps you choose a route based on who plays, where the world lives and who can recover it. A provider’s game panel is one part of that decision, not the whole responsibility list.
Separate game controls from VPS maintenance#
A graphical panel and a managed service can both make game settings easier to reach. The difference is what sits around the game instance and who handles the general-purpose server.
| Job | Hostinger Game Panel VPS | Game Hosting Valheim service |
|---|---|---|
| Create the Valheim instance | Hostinger documents a panel flow for creating one. | The game is selected through a panel built for the hosted game. |
| Change game settings and restart | The Hostinger guide describes Valheim settings in Game Panel. | The panel covers game settings, players and restarts. |
| Manage VPS access and operating system | The offer explicitly includes full root access; VPS controls are separate from the game instance. | The published Valheim page focuses on game-level controls. Check the provider’s documented access if shell access is a requirement. |
| Get help with a game-specific problem | Hostinger starts support through its AI assistant and says a human Customer Success specialist can join when needed. Its public materials do not promise Valheim-specific repair. | Free human support from game specialists is included, with replies within 24 hours. |
Those support paths answer different questions. A Hostinger human can help with Hostinger products, but the public offer does not promise that a specialist will diagnose a particular Valheim mod, world save or client mismatch. Game Hosting’s stated support benefit is game-specific. That is the reason to choose it when you want help with the game itself, not a claim that Hostinger has no human support.
If root access and the freedom to run other software matter more than a game-focused support path, Hostinger’s VPS model gives you that control. For current US VM tiers, transfer allowances and VPS backup charges, see this comparison of Vultr, Hetzner and DigitalOcean for Valheim. If the question is specifically how to divide work between a dedicated server and the owner, see renting versus hosting Valheim yourself.
Compare the bill using the same time period#
As of October 9, 2026, Hostinger’s US Valheim page lists Game Panel 4 at $13.99 per month when you pay $335.76 up front for 24 months. It shows renewal at $28.99 per month. The listed package has 4 vCPU cores, 16 GB RAM, 200 GB NVMe storage and 16 TB bandwidth. That displayed monthly equivalent is not a month-to-month price, and the renewal amount is not the initial term price.
Game Hosting’s Squad plan is $11.99 billed monthly and recommends 4 GB for a small four-player crew. The resources are not equivalent: Hostinger lists 16 GB for its VPS, while Game Hosting’s listed plan allocates 4 GB to Valheim. A RAM difference does not prove that either service performs better for your world.
| Offer snapshot | First-term billing | Listed resources | What to remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostinger Game Panel 4 | $335.76 up front for 24 months; $13.99/month equivalent; renewal shown at $28.99/month | 4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 200 GB NVMe, 16 TB bandwidth | VPS package with root access and multiple game instances; check the order page for the exact amount due. |
| Game Hosting Squad | $11.99 for each billed month | 4 GB dedicated memory; recommended for 4 concurrent players | Valheim-focused plan with panel controls and included backup slots; player count is a recommendation, not a capacity test. |
Do not compare Hostinger’s crossed-out reference price to a renewal or treat its introductory monthly equivalent as a monthly bill. Decide how long you are willing to prepay, then include any backup or software add-ons only after confirming them in the current order flow. For a broader worksheet on monthly hosting, upfront charges and splitting the bill, use the Valheim server cost guide.
Ask what each backup restores#
Hostinger advertises automatic weekly VPS backups and lets you create snapshots. Its VPS backup guide says each new weekly backup replaces the oldest one, leaving two weekly copies available. Restoring a VPS backup overwrites the server’s current contents and removes existing snapshots. Daily VPS backups are a paid option; the general support page shows a $6 monthly price, but the Valheim US cart and applicable term were not verified, so confirm before adding it to a cost estimate.
Game Hosting lists three free panel backup slots. You can take them manually or schedule them, then restore, download or lock a copy. Valheim also keeps its own world copies through the server settings. Those are documented controls, not proof that a specific world has been restored successfully.
| Before you rely on a copy | Ask or check |
|---|---|
| What does it contain? | The whole VPS, one Valheim world, or only selected files? |
| How many versions exist? | How often are copies made, and what replaces the oldest one? |
| What does restore change? | Will the operation overwrite newer progress or remove other recovery points? |
| Can you leave with it? | Can you download the world files before account access changes? |
A backup label is not a recovery plan. Keep a separate copy of the working world, and practice on a disposable world before restoring over a campaign your friends care about. If the provider’s documentation does not explain whether a Game Panel backup can be downloaded and restored independently of the VPS image, ask before buying.
Assign updates and incident ownership#
A dedicated game process and the Linux operating system have separate update work. Hostinger’s manual route includes system and server setup steps; its Game Panel route makes the Valheim instance easier to create, but the public guide does not state that every operating-system task is included in the game panel. Ask who applies OS security updates, checks a failed service and keeps the server compatible after a Valheim patch.
That question matters for a world with a long history. Iron Gate’s October 6, 2026 Valheim 1.0.17 notice describes a rare save-related issue involving objects in chunks and the fix in that patch. It does not show that any host lost a world, nor does it prove a provider’s backup can recover one. It is a reason to keep a known-good copy and check the version notes before updating.
Write down an owner for each event:
| Situation | Decide before the next session |
|---|---|
| Valheim publishes a patch | Who checks mod compatibility and chooses when the server updates? |
| The process stops or the world behaves strangely | Who can read logs, stop the process safely and contact support? |
| A recovery is needed | Who picks the copy, tells the crew what progress may be lost and verifies the restored world? |
| The account owner is away | Who has approved access to the panel or account, without sharing a billing password? |
Hostinger documents an AI-first support path with human escalation, but not a promise of Valheim game-specialist work. Game Hosting includes human game-specialist support with replies within 24 hours. Choose based on the kind of help your operator will need, not a response-speed contest.
Check the connection route before moving the world#
Valheim’s official documentation separates Steam networking from crossplay relay. On the Steam backend, the manual uses the configured UDP port and the next port; the defaults are 2456 and 2457. With the crossplay option enabled, the relay handles the connection, so router port forwarding is not required for that route. Do not apply a Steam forwarding instruction to a relay setup.
The official Valheim 1.0 FAQ describes crossplay across platforms. That does not prove that a particular provider’s panel exposes the right startup option or shows the join code your group needs. Hostinger’s public Valheim materials explain an IP-and-port invitation but do not document a complete console crossplay flow.
Before you move a world, confirm the path your crew actually needs:
List every platform
Record whether each player uses Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox, PlayStation or Switch 2. Crossplay support in the game does not establish that a host’s panel workflow has been checked for every client.
Ask how the server starts
Confirm whether Hostinger Game Panel exposes the Valheim crossplay option and where the code or connection details appear. For any provider, ask which network route its instructions use.
Join with a disposable world
Test from a player on each platform before uploading the crew’s established save. If the route fails, keep the original world unchanged and resolve the platform or version mismatch first.
If your group needs technical steps for running the server yourself, the dedicated-server walkthrough explains the official Steam and relay distinction. Renting can change who maintains the machine; it cannot fix a client problem or an incompatible mod.
Test the location and workload on a disposable world#
A plan’s RAM, vCPU and network figures describe the published package. They are not a Valheim benchmark. A nearby region can reduce the distance players travel to the server, but no provider’s location list guarantees the latency your home connection will see.
Use this checklist on a clean test world before migrating:
- Choose a server region that makes sense for the players who will be online together.
- Use the same Valheim version and the same mod list the crew plans to keep.
- Have the busiest builder and a player from another network join at the same time.
- Try the actual platform and crossplay route; record what happened instead of assuming the address works.
- Confirm how to export the test world and where its backup can be downloaded.
- If you plan to restore, use only a disposable copy and confirm the resulting world loads before relying on the procedure.
No Hostinger or Game Hosting server was rented, joined or benchmarked for this guide. The test plan above is for your decision before moving a live world, not a result from this article.
Choose by the work you want to keep#
| Choose this route when… | It fits a crew that… | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Hostinger Game Panel VPS | Wants root access, room for multiple game instances or broader VPS control, and values its graphical Valheim setup. | Pay the displayed term up front, record the renewal, and assign an owner for VPS-level maintenance. |
| A managed Valheim service | Wants game-focused settings and backup controls, plus support from people who specialize in game servers. | Confirm platform and mod requirements; keep a world export and test recovery before moving the campaign. |
| The official server on your own machine | Has an owner willing to keep the PC, connection and game process available and maintained. | The software can be free, but someone still owns uptime, updates and recovery. |
For a group that wants to spend its time building rather than tending a general-purpose VPS, Game Hosting’s Valheim plans are our recommendation because the game-specific panel, scheduled backup controls and specialist support match that job. If root access is the point, Hostinger’s offer is the more direct fit. Whichever route you choose, keep the original save until the test world and export path have both checked out.
