You will need

  • Your preferred US region and monthly budget
  • A list of server jobs someone in your crew can own
  • A disposable Valheim world for connection and recovery checks

A Valheim server VPS gives you operating-system control, but it also gives your crew the update, firewall and recovery chores. For a named 4 GB tier, DigitalOcean and Vultr list $24 monthly compute plans with different storage and transfer; Hetzner’s CPX21 has a published $37.49 monthly cap, but its live US product page marked the plan unavailable when checked on October 10, 2026. None of those prices proves Valheim performance. This comparison helps you price the real workload and decide whether root access is worth the ongoing work.

Decide whether a Valheim server VPS solves a real problem#

A VPS makes sense when you can name something you need to control: installing a custom service, managing the OS directly, running more than one workload or automating the server around your schedule. If the answer is just “a VPS might be faster,” stop and test first. Shared-vCPU labels and core counts are specifications, not a Valheim benchmark. If you are comparing a VPS with a home machine, calculate the home electricity line from your own wall-meter log with the Valheim break-even worksheet; this page covers VPS pricing and administration.

You also become the operator. Someone must monitor security updates, keep the server process running, preserve world files, inspect logs after a failed update and test a restore. Powering off a cloud instance usually does not end its bill; deleting it does, so preserve any data you need before doing that.

If no one in the group wants those jobs, we recommend Game Hosting’s Valheim plans. The game panel brings settings and scheduled restarts together, with three free backup slots that can be scheduled, restored, downloaded or locked. Free human game-specialist support is included with replies within 24 hours. Those are published service features, not a claim that we benchmarked a VPS against our managed plan.

Compare a managed Valheim plan before paying for a VPS#

The entry comparison is not one-to-one: Game Hosting’s Squad plan is a managed Valheim server with 4 GB memory at $11.99 per month, while the other rows rent general-purpose virtual machines. A VPS gives you root-level control and room to run other software; the managed plan centers the service on Valheim and its game controls. Choose based on the jobs your group wants to own, not the RAM number alone.

Option checked Oct. 10, 2026 Published starting tier Storage and transfer Backups and caveats
Game Hosting Valheim Squad 4 GB, $11.99/month 20 GB game storage; Dallas location Three free backup slots with scheduling, restore, download and lock; managed game service, not a root VPS
DigitalOcean Basic Regular Droplet 2 vCPU, 4 GiB, $24/month 80 GiB SSD, 4,000 GiB transfer Weekly backup adds 20% ($4.80); daily adds 30% ($7.20); excess outbound transfer is billed
Vultr High Performance Cloud Compute 2 vCPU, 4 GB, $24/month 100 GB SSD, 5 TB transfer Automatic backups add 20% ($4.80); location and stock depend on deploy selection
Hetzner CPX21 3 AMD vCPU, 4 GB; June price notice lists $37.49/month cap 80 GB NVMe; US page lists at least 1 TB traffic Official US page marked CPX21 currently unavailable at the time checked; confirm the live replacement price and IPv4/tax terms

Prices are provider list figures checked against official pages on October 10, 2026, before any applicable tax or optional services. DigitalOcean and Vultr both publish a $24 base tier, but their transfer allowances and backup products differ. Hetzner’s June price notice is a dated published rate, not a quote for an orderable instance today. Check the actual region and checkout before you decide. This selected 4 GB comparison is not a claim about the cheapest Valheim hosting on the market.

Check US regions and resources in a 4 GB VPS tier#

First pick the region your players can reach comfortably, then check that the exact tier is still selectable there. A provider’s global location map does not establish stock for a specific plan. On October 10, Hetzner’s regular-performance page showed US locations in Hillsboro and Ashburn but its CPX21 row displayed an unavailable notice. Vultr and DigitalOcean also ask you to choose a location during deployment; verify the tier in that selector.

The provider pages list different virtual CPUs, storage types and transfer limits. They don’t establish how a particular Valheim world behaves. A server with “3 vCPU” in its label is not automatically faster than one with two, and shared CPU scheduling varies by workload. There is no controlled Valheim benchmark behind this table.

Valheim’s official dedicated-server guide documents Windows and Linux server operation. It also describes the default Steam server port range and the crossplay relay route. That makes operating system and network setup part of your selection: follow the current official instructions for your chosen backend instead of assuming every group must use the same port-forwarding steps.

Price the full month, backups, bandwidth, and extras#

Compare recurring cost, not just the first number on a VM card. DigitalOcean’s bundled Basic Droplets are billed per second with a 60-second minimum and a monthly cap; the server continues to bill while powered off. Its weekly and daily backup options add 20% and 30% to the Droplet cost. The $24 example therefore becomes $28.80 with weekly backups or $31.20 with daily backups, before tax and other charges. DigitalOcean also lists snapshots at $0.06 each month for every stored GB and outbound transfer beyond the pooled allowance at $0.01 per GiB.

Vultr documents automatic backups at 20% of the instance price. On its listed $24 tier, that is $4.80 more per month. The documentation says it retains the two most recent backups and covers the active filesystem, not attached block volumes. If your world lives on a separate volume, ask how that volume is protected or plan a separate copy.

Hetzner’s current page describes hourly billing with a monthly cap and says US cloud servers include at least 1 TB of traffic. The CPX21’s exact live price and availability need to be checked in the order flow: the plan was marked unavailable when reviewed. Its price-adjustment notice lists $37.49 per month before VAT and IPv4; the product page’s display treatment can differ, so confirm the final line items rather than adding or omitting an address charge by assumption.

For every provider, record the backup schedule, retention, restore path, storage charges and who gets alerted if a backup fails. “Backups available” does not answer how quickly you can get a healthy world back. Download a copy or restore it to a disposable server before inviting friends to build on the only save.

Assign server chores before choosing your provider#

Put a name beside every recurring job. This keeps “I’ll handle the server” from quietly meaning “I will be on call forever.”

Job Questions to answer before buying
OS security and updates Who applies patches, and who checks the server still starts afterward?
Valheim updates Who decides when to update, and how will you handle a client/server version mismatch?
Firewall and access Who can change network rules, and how will you review exposed services?
World backups Where is the second copy, how often is it made, and who has restored it?
Monitoring and restart Who sees a stopped process or full disk when the usual host is away?
Billing and deletion Who can remove the instance, and where are world files exported first?

A VPS works best when an operator is already comfortable answering those questions. A panel can simplify server controls, but it does not necessarily own guest OS maintenance or off-instance recovery. Read the product’s exact support and backup scope before treating a general-purpose cloud VM as a managed game server.

Run a representative world test before you commit#

There is no universal RAM or CPU line in this comparison that can certify your world. Create a disposable server in the intended region, use the same game version and mods your group plans to run, and exercise the places that usually load the world hardest. Have the expected players join, travel and build for a representative session while you observe memory, CPU, disk and connection behavior in the provider’s tools.

Then test the boring failure cases: restart the VM, confirm the game starts again, and restore a backup onto a separate test instance. Keep your original world unchanged until the copy opens and the expected characters can join. This is a practical evaluation checklist; we did not run provider benchmarks or perform restore tests for this article.

For the Steam backend, use the current official Valheim dedicated-server guide and verify the ports and firewall rules it lists. If friends use crossplay, check the current official crossplay FAQ before changing router rules based on an older tutorial.

Choose by control, cost, and who does the work#

Pick the VPS when root access or custom automation has a concrete purpose and someone in the crew can maintain it. Pick managed hosting when game-specific settings, scheduled restarts, backups and specialist help are worth more than OS-level control. For more server routes beyond VPS providers, compare the Valheim dedicated server options and the Valheim server requirements by crew size. If you are specifically weighing a provider’s game panel against a VPS, our Hostinger Valheim VPS and managed-host comparison covers that separate decision.

Treat today’s prices and stock as a snapshot. Confirm the chosen region, backup bill, traffic terms and recovery path in the current order flow, then test your own world before moving the only copy of a long-running campaign.

Sources and comparison method#

Prices and feature descriptions were checked on October 10, 2026 against DigitalOcean Droplet pricing, its backup pricing, Vultr pricing and its automatic backup documentation, and Hetzner’s US regular-performance plans and June 2026 price adjustment. This is an editorial comparison of published plans, not an independent award or performance test. Verify availability, tax, IPv4 and add-ons at checkout.

Quick answers

Is a Valheim server VPS automatically faster than managed hosting?

No. A vCPU count and provider label do not show how a Valheim world performs under your crew’s load. Test your own world and region before treating either option as faster.

What extra charges should I check on a Valheim VPS?

Check backup frequency and retention, extra transfer, snapshots, tax, IPv4 and whether the monthly price is a cap. The provider’s checkout is the final quote for your region.

When does VPS control justify the extra administration?

Choose a VPS when you need root access, custom automation or other services on the same machine and someone can maintain it. A managed game plan fits better when you want game controls and recovery tasks without owning the general server.
