You will need

  • The Thunderstore package page and exact release you are evaluating
  • Your server build, operating system and player platform list
  • A disposable world and a separate test session before approving a package

Thunderstore for Valheim is a catalog, not a compatibility certificate. Before you install a package on a dedicated server, identify its exact owner and version, inspect every dependency, confirm which machines the maintainer says should install it, and test that pinned set on a disposable world. Iron Gate says it does not officially support community mods or guarantee they work after game updates. This guide gives you a repeatable way to turn a catalog page into a test candidate, while keeping unanswered questions visible instead of treating tags, downloads or a fresh upload as proof.

Find the exact Valheim Thunderstore package#

Start at the Valheim community on Thunderstore. Search results can include similarly named packages, forks, libraries and older releases. Record the full package coordinate—namespace or uploader plus package name—and the exact version. Save the package URL in your mod list so another admin can find the same entry.

Do not record only a display name or “latest.” The package identity and version should be pinned together, because a maintainer can update a package while you are reading or planning. Keep a dated copy of the release notes or manifest for a group that needs reproducible changes.

Record What to capture Why it matters
Package identity Thunderstore namespace and package name Distinguishes lookalike entries and forks
Exact release Version number and page or archive URL Makes the test repeatable after an update
Maintainer Named uploader, project link and contact or issue tracker Gives you a source for instructions and unresolved questions
Game build Explicit Valheim version stated by the maintainer, if any A recent upload is not the same as a declared game target
Evidence date When you checked the page and release files Catalog metadata can change after your review

Thunderstore also exposes categories, download counts and dependent packages. Treat these as discovery clues. A “Server-side” category can help narrow the catalog, but it does not prove the package will work with your build, operating system, clients or world.

Read the maintainer’s instructions and release notes#

Open the package description, documentation, source repository and changelog. Look for an explicit Valheim build, installation side, dedicated-server requirements, supported platforms and known issues. If a release note says only “compatibility patch,” record that as a claim with no detail; do not guess which game update or behavior it addresses.

Check the date and context of any compatibility statement. A package may be maintained actively while still lacking a note for the current Valheim build. The official 1.0.20 patch notes do not certify community packages. Iron Gate’s mod policy says the game has no official mod support and that compatibility with newer game versions is not guaranteed.

The BepInExPack Valheim page is an example of why each layer deserves its own row. Its maintainer describes a Valheim-configured loader pack, provides Windows and Linux setup details, and distinguishes the Thunderstore pack version from the upstream BepInEx version. That explains the loader package; it does not establish that a plugin using it is compatible with the current game.

If the package page links to a source repository, compare its release or tag with the catalog version. If instructions are missing, contradictory or outdated, mark the package unresolved and ask the maintainer before testing it on a world you care about.

Pin every dependency to its own release#

Use the package’s “Required” or dependency section, then inspect each dependency page in turn. Record each exact name and version, including nested dependencies. Do not assume a mod manager profile, a server control panel or a copied folder will resolve an unclear dependency graph correctly.

Thunderstore’s current ServersideQoL package page lists version 2.4.0. Its required packages page currently lists BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2351 and YamlDotNet 16.3.1. The 2.4.0 changelog describes the release only as a “Compatibility patch.” This is a snapshot of pages checked October 17, 2026, not a recommendation or a test result. Recheck the exact dependency rows and release archive before using it; the page alone does not say what the patch changes or certify the package against Valheim 1.0.20.

For each dependency, record whether the parent package requires it, which version is requested, where it must be installed, and whether it brings additional dependencies. When the current dependency display and a pinned release archive disagree, stop and resolve the mismatch before approving the stack.

Assign client and server installation roles#

The package maintainer’s directions determine the starting role: server only, every client, server and clients, or unclear. Copy the exact statement and source into your evidence card. Keep that role separate from the package’s category tag and from your own test outcome.

ServersideQoL’s maintainer describes it as dedicated-server-only and says it was designed and tested for dedicated servers with vanilla or console clients. That statement is useful evidence to investigate; it is not an independent test of the current package version, current Valheim build or your crossplay group. If console access matters, test an actual console player joining the same test world after the package and dependencies are installed.

Maintainer says Your test should include
Server only Start the dedicated server with the pinned package; join with the intended unmodded client types
Client required Install the same pinned release on each required client and the server role specified by the maintainer
Client and server Compare exact versions on both sides and verify joins and the feature together
Role unclear Pause; get instructions from the maintainer rather than guessing

For a broader client-versus-server planning question, keep the package role from its maintainer’s instructions in your evidence card. This catalog review stays focused on what the publisher actually documents.

Test a pinned candidate without risking your campaign#

A package can pass a page review and still fail when the server starts, a player joins, a feature runs or the world saves. Create an isolated test with a copied or disposable world. Keep the production package list and world untouched until the test is complete. Record the game build, server operating system, player platform, loader, package coordinates and dependencies.

Run the test in steps: first start the server and check logs; then connect each required client type; try the feature the package claims to add; stop and restart; confirm the world still loads and the change persists; finally remove the package in the test copy and note what happens to affected objects or data. A startup without an obvious error proves only that the startup path completed, not that every feature or client combination works.

Do not call a package compatible because it has many downloads, dependants or a recent upload. Those measures do not show which exact release was tested, whether a console client joined, or whether a feature survives a restart. If you cannot test an important combination, keep it in the unresolved column and do not roll it into the live campaign.

For a step-by-step plan for coordinating a full multiplayer mod set, see how to plan compatible Valheim multiplayer mods. That guide covers crew policy and approval; this one helps you evaluate the catalog evidence before a candidate enters that plan.

Keep an evidence card for each mod#

Use one compact card per package and update it when the version or game build changes. The distinction between “maintainer says,” “we observed” and “we have not tested” keeps your notes useful when another admin takes over.

Evidence card field Example entry
Package ArgusMagnus-ServersideQoL
Release checked 2.4.0, package page checked Oct. 17, 2026
Dependencies checked denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim 5.4.2351; ValheimModding-YamlDotNet 16.3.1
Maintainer role claim Dedicated-server-only; intended for vanilla/console clients
Game-build evidence No explicit 1.0.20 compatibility claim found in the reviewed listing or short changelog
Our test Not performed for this guide; no compatibility claim
Decision Candidate for a controlled test; not approved for the campaign

Capture the exact archive or manifest used during a successful test, not just the profile name. If a package is updated, repeat the relevant checks against the new versions. For comparing hosting controls after you have a tested file list, Valheim server hosting with mods explains what to verify before moving the setup. You can also evaluate the package on a local dedicated server first; renting infrastructure is not required to browse Thunderstore or prepare this card.

Decide what evidence is still missing#

Use a simple decision rule: approve only the exact tested set for the exact player roster and game build; test candidate when the documentation is promising but incomplete; reject or defer if identity, dependencies, install role or source cannot be established. Reopen the card after a Valheim patch, mod update, dependency change or platform change.

The package listing is the beginning of that process, not its conclusion. For each server mod, leave the next admin with a fixed version, dependency list, source links, role evidence, test record and unresolved questions. That is a more useful answer to “is this Thunderstore mod compatible?” than an upload date or a category label.

Quick answers

Does a Server-side tag prove a Valheim mod works on a dedicated server?

No. It is a useful filter, not a test. Check the maintainer’s installation instructions, required packages and game-build notes, then test the exact release on your own isolated server.

Does a server-side Valheim mod work with vanilla or console clients?

Only if the maintainer documents that setup, and even then verify the exact game and mod versions with representative clients. A category tag or crossplay support alone cannot prove it.

Are popular or recently updated Thunderstore mods safe to install?

Popularity and recency do not establish safety, compatibility or fit for your world. Review the package source, permissions and release notes, pin the files, and test before deployment.

Can I test a Thunderstore mod without renting a server?

Yes. You can start with a local dedicated server and a disposable world. That lets you evaluate the package without buying hosting, though it does not test a future provider’s controls.
