Valheim server hosting with mods: checks before you buy
Compare Valheim server hosting with mods by checking package support, file access, update controls and recoverable worlds before moving your crew.
You will need
- Exact mod package names, versions and dependencies
- Each player's platform and store edition
- Candidate provider documentation and a named operator
- A disposable world for testing before moving the campaign
Choose Valheim server hosting with mods against your exact package list and the controls needed to maintain it. A provider’s “mod support” badge does not establish that your plugins, world and friends will work together. This guide turns an intended mod profile into questions about file access, updates, recovery and support before you pay or move the campaign. Allow about 15 minutes to prepare the checklist, then a separate session for practical checks. We reviewed current documentation; we have not rented a server, tested a mod stack or performed a restore for this guide.
Match Valheim server hosting with mods to a fixed package list#
For a provider’s general trial clock, access, restart and recovery checks, follow the Valheim server free-trial checklist first, then add your mod-specific acceptance criteria here.
For a Valheim group that wants to spend less time maintaining the host, we recommend Game Hosting. The integrated panel and three free backup slots make settings and recovery part of the same workflow. Exact mod or map requirements still matter: included hosting does not make an incompatible package work.
Give each candidate the same named, versioned mod list before asking whether it supports your server. “BepInEx plus a few building mods” leaves too much open: the loader, individual plugins and their dependencies are separate things to approve.
Start with the packages your group already intends to use. Record the maintainer and package identifier rather than relying on a display name shared by several forks. Your list should contain enough information for another operator to identify the same releases.
| Record | What to supply | Question for the provider |
|---|---|---|
| Loader | Package identifier and release | Can this service run that exact package on its server OS? |
| Each plugin | Maintainer, package name and version | Is it allowed, and which installation method supports it? |
| Dependencies | Required packages and versions | Can every required component be installed and retained? |
| Installation side | Server, client or both, from maintainer documentation | Which parts do you manage, and which remain our responsibility? |
| Players | Devices, store editions and required client components | What evidence is available for this actual roster? |
Checked September 15, 2026, the maintainer’s BepInExPack Valheim page lists package version 5.4.2350, based on a customized BepInEx 5.4.23.5. Those numbers identify different layers. Do not replace the specified pack with whichever upstream release has the largest number. The pack’s zero listed dependencies also says nothing about the requirements of plugins you add afterward.
Attach the source and date to unresolved entries. If nobody can establish a required plugin’s current compatibility, leave the proposed configuration pending. For schedule, account ownership and budget questions that apply to any crew, complete the broader Valheim hosting buyer checklist alongside this package list.
Require access to the loader, files and startup logs#
Approve a service only when its documented controls cover the operations your packages require. An installer for a curated mod catalog is useful, but it may not provide arbitrary uploads, startup changes or access to a dependency outside that catalog.
Ask which server operating system is supplied. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server manual documents Windows and Linux; the Valheim BepInEx pack has platform-specific launch instructions. For example, its Linux server launcher is named:
start_server_bepinex.shThis is a file to discuss with the operator, not an installation command. A panel must offer a supported way to launch the required environment; uploading plugins alone cannot establish that the loader starts. For containers, ask separately about the supplied image and persistent storage rather than assuming native Linux instructions transfer unchanged. A Mac client’s availability likewise does not prove a native Mac dedicated-server offering.
Check whether you can upload required files, edit configuration, read startup and plugin logs, stop the process and retrieve an export. Request the relevant documentation or a demonstration from the proposed service. You do not necessarily need unrestricted machine access if the supported controls cover every required operation.
Current provider pages show why specificity matters. DatHost advertises custom mod uploads, while ValheimServerHosting’s mod section labels uploading your own mods as coming soon at our September 15 check. These are documented offers, not functions we exercised. Confirm the current answer for your required package before paying; a broad “full control” claim cannot settle a missing upload route.
Agree who controls updates before the first patch#
Set an update policy for the game, loader and plugins separately. Iron Gate’s position on mods does not guarantee compatibility after game updates, so automatically updating one layer can leave the remaining layers behind.
Ask what updates automatically, what triggers the update, and whether the operator can defer it. Include restarts: a service may apply an update when the process restarts even if nobody explicitly clicked an update button. Get a concrete answer for each layer rather than accepting “we keep everything current.”
DatHost’s current page advertises automatic game updates within 15 minutes. That is a published policy to evaluate, not our measured update time. For a modded campaign it raises a useful question: can an administrator postpone a game update while checking plugin support, and under what conditions? Do not infer that postponement is available merely because file uploads are supported.
Write down who checks maintainer release notes, who changes the package list, and who tells players when their client profile must change. If exact version pinning is available, clarify whether it covers the game, loader, plugins or only some of them. Keeping the server fixed does not guarantee friends can keep compatible clients fixed too.
Before approving an update, identify the protected pre-update copy and the separate place where the change can be evaluated. Ask whether restoring an older environment is actually supported; “rollback” must name what gets restored. A backup of world data alone does not necessarily restore the previous game executable, plugin versions or configuration.
The policy is ready when another caretaker can explain what happens on patch day, including the fallback when a required mod is not ready. Pausing the campaign can be a more workable plan than repeatedly restarting an incompatible setup.
Keep every client’s participation an acceptance condition#
Require evidence for each actual client platform before approving the modded configuration. A successful Steam connection does not prove a console participant can use the same mod set.
The official Valheim 1.0 FAQ says there is no official console mod support and does not guarantee community mods will work after the release. That does not justify declaring every server with any mod incompatible with every console. It means you must inspect the specific packages and test the intended joining route.
For each plugin, distinguish what runs on the server from what a player must install. If it requires a client component that a friend cannot install, the proposed roster has not passed. Conversely, a “server-only” label is not a substitute for current evidence that its behavior works with your particular console clients.
Before you request a provider’s controls, prepare a crew mod manifest that identifies every package, dependency, player platform and unresolved test.
Use the provider’s supported backend and a disposable world for the check. Native crossplay is also available to self-hosters through the official relay route without router forwarding; renting is not inherently required to get that feature. Native crossplay support still does not certify community plugins.
Ask one representative of every intended edition to join and exercise the features the group bought the mod pack for. Record the actual releases and date. Mark absent platforms as untested instead of treating a partial session as approval for everyone. If the group changes packages later, reassess the affected clients before resuming the campaign.
Evaluate resources with the proposed workload#
Choose resources from observed workload and the service’s actual limits, not from the number of mods alone. Two plugins that change small settings can have very different consequences from a package that adds substantial content or changes shared behavior.
Use our Valheim plan-sizing worksheet to record peak attendance, world history and busy locations. Keep that workload consistent when comparing a self-run baseline with a rental. An empty test world establishes basic compatibility; it cannot stand in for the performance of an established harbor full of buildings.
Once basic checks pass, use a protected copy through the supported procedure for representative play. Ask what memory, CPU, restart and log information the provider exposes. During a problem, record the activity, timestamp, affected players and relevant messages. If the service does not expose a measurement, leave it unavailable rather than estimating spare capacity from a plan label.
More RAM is a possible response to demonstrated memory pressure. It does not by itself fix an incompatible plugin, a player’s local frame rate or a connection problem. Ask what an upgrade changes and which repeated activity will show whether it addressed the observed issue.
Prove you can export and restore the complete setup#
Require a recovery plan for the world and its mod environment before entrusting the campaign to a provider. An automated world backup is useful, but it does not establish that you can reconstruct every plugin, configuration file and mod-specific data store needed to load that world correctly.
Ask exactly what each backup contains and how long it remains accessible. Record the complete world folder (since Valheim 1.0, worlds_local/<WorldName>/ with its _main files and many *.chunk files, not only the older .db and .fwl pair), alongside the package/version list, configurations and any additional data documented by the mods. Keep an independent export using the provider’s supported procedure. Ask what happens to exports and backups when billing ends or the account becomes inaccessible.
For a consistent manual snapshot, stop the server through its supported controls before copying the required set. If the provider offers a managed snapshot process instead, confirm how it obtains consistent data. Do not assemble a supposed recovery set from unrelated files captured during different states of a running campaign.
Have the operator restore the test export, supply the required environment and check recognizable progress after loading. Include any plugin-owned state that matters to the crew. Record what passed and what remains untested; a completed download or “backup successful” message is not the restoration result.
Finally, give a second authorized caretaker the documented recovery instructions. Verify the supported account permissions or assistance route rather than sharing the billing password. Recovery that only the usual operator understands can still leave the crew waiting when that person is away.
Approve support boundaries and the purchase separately#
Accept a modded hosting offer when its operating scope matches your requirements and the practical checks pass. A provider may support installing BepInEx while leaving individual plugin debugging to you. That can be a workable arrangement if someone in the crew accepts the remaining job.
Send a short request with the completed package list: “Please confirm the server OS, supported upload and startup controls, update timing, backup contents and excluded plugins. Who investigates a loader failure, and who handles a plugin conflict? Can we test joining and restoration before moving our world?” Keep written answers with the offer and its date. Preparing this request does not imply that any provider has already approved it.
Qualify the documented offer
Match every essential package and operating requirement to an answer. Read the renewal, cancellation and testing terms before paying; do not assume a free trial exists. Keep unanswered essentials pending.
Run the agreed acceptance session
On a disposable world, test every intended client, the required mod features and persistence after a supported restart. Verify a separate restore, then evaluate a protected representative workload. Record the configuration and results.
Approve the campaign move
Assign update and recovery owners, preserve the original world and use the supported transfer procedure. Move only after the required checks pass; share any accepted support limitations with the crew.
For a managed destination, we recommend Game Hosting’s Valheim hosting with an integrated panel, control over updates and free backups. Confirm support for your exact loader, server OS and mod list before moving. Test the package set and required clients on a protected world before replacing your original.
A dedicated process on an available PC is a free-software baseline while you evaluate the options. It still needs a willing operator, and its results do not prove a rental’s controls or performance. Keep the arrangement that passes the crew’s checks within an understood cost and maintenance commitment.
Quick answers
Does BepInEx support mean every Valheim mod will work?
No. Loader support only establishes one part of the setup. Check each plugin’s dependencies, game-version support, installation side and platform requirements separately.
Can console friends join my modded Valheim server?
Treat that as a requirement to verify for the exact mod set. Official crossplay support does not establish plugin compatibility, and a required client mod may exclude a player who cannot install it.
Is extra RAM enough to fix a slow mod pack?
Only consider more memory as a remedy when observations support memory pressure as the cause. Plugin errors, client frame rate and network problems need their own diagnosis.
Can I test modded hosting without renting first?
A dedicated process on an available PC can provide a free-software baseline. That does not prove a rental’s controls or performance, so verify those separately before moving the campaign.
