Valheim Server Free Trial: Who Offers One and What to Test
A Valheim server free trial is a test window, not a refund. Compare current terms, then run safe join, restart and recovery checks before choosing.
You will need
- The platforms and game builds your crew uses
- A disposable world or a separate copy for recovery checks
- The trial end time, billing terms and account owner
A Valheim server free trial is useful only if your crew can answer two questions before the timer runs out: does everyone connect, and can the world be handed off or recovered safely? Check the payment trigger and end-of-trial rules first, then schedule one representative session. Game Hosting publishes a no-card 24-hour trial whose clock starts when the server is ready; it may pause when capacity is full, and its 24-hour window is shorter than Indifferent Broccoli’s advertised two days. This guide compares the current terms and gives you a safe acceptance record. We did not open provider accounts, rent servers, or test performance or restore behavior.
Compare the Valheim server free trial terms first#
For a managed Valheim world, we recommend Game Hosting when you want the trial and the later server controls in one game panel. Its published offer starts the 24-hour clock when the server is ready, asks for no payment card, and includes three backup slots on the paid plans. That makes the start trigger and the documented recovery controls straightforward to inspect. Capacity can pause trials, and a listed backup is not proof that a restore succeeds.
The offers below are a small, dated comparison, not a ranking of every host. We checked the public Valheim offer pages on October 8, 2026. Trial availability and terms can change, so reopen the provider’s terms before you submit an account or payment detail.
| Provider | Publicly stated trial | What to confirm before starting |
|---|---|---|
| Game Hosting | 24 hours, no payment card; timer starts when the server is ready; one per person; trial may pause at capacity | Save the start time shown for your order and the expiry time. The world and settings remain for 7 days after expiry; the server stops unless you keep the same server. |
| Indifferent Broccoli | 2 days free, no card; the Valheim offer page shows $12.99/month after the trial | The page does not state the expiry behavior or data-retention period. Ask what happens to the world and when it is deleted before you invest progress. |
| Nodecraft | 24 hours without a card, or a separate 3-day option with payment details; while supplies last | A valid mobile number is required. Its FAQ excludes Build Your Own and says trial servers do not allow FTP/file uploads. Check which option your account is eligible for. |
The differences matter more than the headline duration. A longer window may fit a group’s calendar better, but it does not tell you whether your world can be downloaded, whether the trial has feature limits, or when data is removed. For Game Hosting, the published Valheim offer is one per person and can pause when trial capacity is full. No provider’s current capacity or your account eligibility is guaranteed by this comparison.
If you want a broader provider comparison rather than a time-limited acceptance check, start with our Valheim hosting comparison and crew requirements checklist. The full free Valheim hosting options guide covers self-hosting and other no-cost routes.
Separate a free trial from a refund or discount#
A free trial is permission to use a service for a limited period under the trial terms. A paid plan’s refund window begins after a purchase and may require a charge first. A discount reduces a price; it does not create free time. Ask which event starts the clock and whether a payment method is required.
When a paid offer has no trial, use the Valheim renewal and cancellation checklist to record its actual first bill and next charge before you pay.
Game Hosting’s public refund policy is separate from its trial. As checked October 8, it describes a request within 48 hours of the first monthly or yearly payment when the problem was caused on the provider’s side, such as hardware, network or setup. It is reviewed by a person and is not a change-of-mind refund. A free trial does not require this paid refund route.
Before entering billing details anywhere, write down:
- Whether the trial requires a card, a phone number, or both.
- Whether it converts automatically, and the amount and date of the first charge.
- How you stop a renewal and whether cancellation also stops the trial immediately.
- Whether a trial world is kept, downloadable or deleted after the end time.
- Whether the provider limits the game, file access, backups or support during the trial.
If the terms do not answer one of these, ask support before you begin. Save a copy or screenshot of the applicable offer and its date. A checkout summary can differ from a general marketing page, so use the conditions shown for your own account.
Set the timer around one useful crew session#
Do not start a short trial while the group is still deciding who will attend. Pick a session that includes the people and platforms that must work, then schedule the server start early enough to complete account setup before everyone arrives. Note the moment the provider says the trial clock begins; a button click may not be the trigger.
Make a small pass/fail record before anyone builds a permanent base:
| Check | Record | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Offer | Start trigger, expiry, card/phone requirements, conversion and deletion terms | The owner can explain the next charge and what happens to the world. |
| Crew access | Each member’s platform, game build and join result | Every required player can enter the intended world. |
| Session | Time, approximate crew activity, disconnects or visible stalls | The group can complete its representative play session; observations are notes, not a performance guarantee. |
| Restart | Who requested it, what the panel reported, and whether the crew rejoined | The intended world returns and players can rejoin. |
| Recovery | Copy name/date, export instructions and separate-copy result | A disposable copy can be opened at the test destination without touching the main world. |
| Exit | Keep/cancel action, deadline and stated retention | The owner knows how to protect or remove the world before the deadline. |
If your group only has one evening, agree on must-pass checks in advance: one join from each required platform, one restart/rejoin, and a recovery-path review. Do not spend the whole trial adjusting optional settings and leave the owner unsure about billing or data retention.
Use a disposable world before inviting the whole crew#
Create a new test world or use a copied world that contains nothing the group needs to keep. Do not upload or overwrite the only copy of an established campaign just to see whether a control works. Give the test world an obvious temporary name, note the current game build, and record who owns the provider account.
Valheim’s dedicated-server manual describes its server setup and the default Steam-backend UDP ports, 2456–2457. It also documents the -crossplay relay, which avoids router port forwarding for that self-hosted configuration. Those instructions do not verify a rental host’s firewall, setup, or route. Follow the host’s current connection instructions and test from outside the owner’s local network when that is part of your real use.
Write down the world name, server label, join method, platform and version for every player. If the session mixes Xbox and Steam, confirm that the server and clients use the required crossplay route. Iron Gate’s crossplay FAQ explains that Xbox can join a dedicated server with crossplay enabled but cannot host the dedicated-server process. Check the live game UI and each crew member’s current build; platform menus and updates can change.
Test joining, leaving and rejoining after a restart#
Have one person start from a different network if possible. Ask a second player to join using the method the crew will actually use. Then have the group leave and rejoin. Record what happened instead of translating one successful attempt into “works everywhere.”
Next, use the provider’s documented restart control on the disposable server. Wait for the panel to report its current state, then let one friend rejoin the same world. Check that the test structures and location remain. If the world name changes, a player sees a fresh world, or the server stays unavailable, stop and record the time and exact panel message before asking support. Do not use the main campaign to repeat an uncertain restart.
The goal is to learn whether your crew can carry out the basic session with the account and settings you expect. A single evening cannot establish long-term uptime, latency for other regions, or performance under a larger world. Keep those separate from pass/fail items the group can observe directly.
Inspect an export or restore on a separate copy#
Find the current instructions for exporting a world or restoring a backup. Record the copy’s date or name, where the file goes, who can download it, how long it is retained and what the restore step replaces. If the provider offers a download, preserve that file in a location the group controls where the provider’s terms allow it.
Only test a restore with a disposable world or a copy in a separate destination. Confirm that the destination is not the only live campaign and that the procedure will not replace a newer save. If the provider does not document a safe separate destination, do not experiment on a valuable world. Ask support for a test procedure first.
Game Hosting publishes three backup slots with controls to create, restore, download and lock copies. These documented controls make it possible to inspect the recovery workflow in the panel; they do not mean we tested a Valheim restore for this guide. A backup count, a successful download or a provider’s statement that backups run is not evidence that your own copy opens correctly. Keep the main world protected until the crew has checked the separate copy.
For a newly paid rental, our first-steps checklist covers ownership and recovery questions before the crew moves its campaign. If your world uses mods, use the dedicated Valheim mod-hosting checklist too; a vanilla trial does not validate a modded setup.
Decide whether to keep the server or leave#
At the end of the session, compare the notes against the crew’s requirements. Keep the server only if the people who need access can join, the owner understands billing, and the group has an acceptable way to protect its world. If a required check failed, retain the timestamp and ask for a concrete answer before adding permanent progress.
For Game Hosting, the public terms checked October 8 say the server stops at the end of its 24-hour trial and the world/settings remain for 7 days; the owner can keep the same server before that retention window ends. Do not assume another host follows the same schedule. Indifferent Broccoli’s current Valheim offer does not state its end-of-trial retention, and Nodecraft’s page focuses on trial eligibility and restrictions. Get those details directly before the first session if they affect your decision.
The Game Hosting Valheim page is the product reference if the group wants to compare plans after its checks. It is reasonable to stay with a free self-hosted route if someone can maintain it and keep the world available when the crew needs it. Paying for hosting is a decision about who operates the server and what controls the account owner needs, not proof that a trial passed every test.
Finish the record with one of three decisions: keep, ask before keeping, or leave. Save the terms and the pass/fail notes with the person responsible for the world. That gives the crew a useful answer even if the trial ends before a perfect test; it also prevents a successful first join from standing in for a billing, restart or recovery decision.
Quick answers
Is a Valheim server free trial the same as a refund?
No. A trial lets you use a service before payment under its trial terms. A refund is a remedy after a paid purchase and can have different eligibility rules.
What should I test during a Valheim hosting trial?
Check the exact offer terms, let every platform your crew uses join, observe a representative session and restart, then test an export on a separate disposable copy if the host supports it.
Can I safely test a server restore?
Only use a disposable world or separate copy and a destination that cannot overwrite your main save. A backup listing or download alone does not prove the restore works.
What if the trial is shorter than our session?
Agree on a test time before starting, run must-pass checks first and save the terms and results. Do not assume the provider will extend the window.
