A Valheim server manager can replace repeated script edits with forms, buttons and a backup screen. The important question is what it actually owns: the server process, launch settings, world files, update path and recovery routine. This comparison covers three maintained tools and separates their documentation from one Windows hands-on check; it is not a ranking of every panel or a guarantee that an update or world restore will work.

Choose a Valheim server manager by operating system first#

A local Windows app is a different fit from a web panel that can run on Linux or Windows. The table reflects project documentation checked October 12, 2026. A listed feature is a documented capability, not a workflow I tested unless the test column says so.

Manager Platform and maintenance checked Documented fit What I verified
ValheimServerGUI Windows 10/11 x64; GPL-3.0; .NET 6 Desktop Runtime. Release 2.4.0, Sep. 27; its release notes describe Valheim 1.0 support. Local profiles, server options, crossplay and safe shutdown. The project documents extra launch arguments, but not a current backup/restore or update workflow. Not run here: the required .NET 6 Desktop Runtime was absent.
Valheim BakaLoader Windows 10/11; .NET 6 Desktop Runtime; source-available terms permit personal/community use but restrict redistribution and derivative work. Release 1.2.14, Oct. 12. Maintainer docs describe settings, schedules, backups, world restore, logs and separate app/game updates. It is a desktop tool, not a Windows service. Not run here: the required .NET 6 Desktop Runtime was absent. Treat workflow details as maintainer documentation.
Valheim Server UI Linux and Windows; MIT. Release 1.21.3, Oct. 9. Windows docs list Server 2019+ or Windows 10/11. Web controls for instances, settings, players, backups, world files, updates and mods. Its normal Windows installer creates a service and system paths; direct serve --config PATH mode is documented for an isolated setup. Direct mode started and stopped a copied Valheim 1.0.17 server; one manual backup was created. Details below.

These tools also have different owners. A local GUI can help configure and start a server, but it does not keep a home PC awake or open the router for you. A self-hosted web panel still needs a machine, operating-system updates, storage and network access. A managed host takes on some of that server administration, while leaving game decisions and world compatibility to you.

If you are still choosing where the server should run, compare the Valheim dedicated-server routes first. A manager is a way to operate a server; it is not itself a hosting plan.

Check who owns settings and launch arguments#

Iron Gate’s dedicated-server manual describes launch arguments for the Windows batch file or Linux shell script and recommends editing a copy because Steam updates can reset the original. A manager may create and maintain its own profile, so decide which file or form is authoritative before adding a manual flag.

Use a disposable profile to check that boundary:

  1. Save a copy of the launch script or profile before changing it.
  2. Change one documented setting in the manager and inspect the generated arguments or log.
  3. Restart the copied server and confirm the value it actually used.
  4. Add a harmless manual argument only if the tool supports it, then check whether a later save or restart keeps it.

The configuration screen alone does not prove how duplicate values are resolved. I did not independently test manual-argument precedence across these projects, so do not assume that an edited startup line will survive a manager save or update. For the native Valheim flags themselves, see the separate dedicated-server options reference.

Check backup, export and restore as separate jobs#

A backup control is useful when you can identify its output and make a safe copy. Server UI’s documentation describes scheduled and manual backups, download/upload, world export and restore. BakaLoader’s maintainer docs also describe backup and world-restore functions. ValheimServerGUI’s current README does not establish those workflows; silence is not proof that a feature is impossible, so check its current app and documentation before choosing it for save management.

During the Server UI check, I created a manual ZIP backup from a disposable world. It contained the four world files shown by the manager, along with permission-list files and a manifest. That confirms this backup-creation path produced an archive in this setup. I did not complete the manager’s Restore or Download action, nor test a client opening the restored world. Do not treat the presence of a ZIP as proof of a successful restore.

Before switching tools, stop the server and preserve the full world directory, not a single file. Keep the original untouched until the copy has been loaded and checked. The manager’s retention labels also matter: find how many copies remain, where they live and whether the schedule removes older files. I did not measure retention here.

Plan updates and failure recovery#

The three tools report different maintenance paths. ValheimServerGUI and BakaLoader are Windows desktop choices; Server UI has a documented game-update flow and a separate checksum-verified rollback for its own application. An app rollback is not the same as rolling back Valheim or restoring a world.

I checked Server UI’s update screen against the copied Valheim server build 25730807. The installed and latest build matched, so no game update was available to run. I then temporarily moved only the copied valheim_server.exe: the panel marked the server as not installed. After putting the same executable back, it recognized the build and started the server again. This narrow missing-file check does not verify recovery from a bad game update, a damaged save, or loss of the manager’s data directory. The project’s Windows CI also uses a fake server, so its documentation should not be read as an independent test of every real-server workflow.

What the hands-on check covered

On October 12, 2026, I ran Valheim Server UI 1.21.3 in documented direct mode on Windows, bound to loopback with configuration and data under a temporary directory. I did not run its installer or create a system service. The copied Valheim Dedicated Server reported version 1.0.17; the manager showed the instance running and stopped it cleanly. I also checked the no-update result, the missing-executable detection and one manual backup creation.

I did not test a licensed game client, a remote join, a real game update, application rollback, restore through the manager, or argument precedence. Those remain unverified. Releases and screenshots help you compare interfaces; a disposable copy is still the right place to prove the exact recovery action your group will rely on.

Run a small acceptance test before changing a live world#

A feature list is a shortlist, not a migration plan. Before handing a campaign to a new manager, reproduce only the setup you intend to use and keep the current world untouched:

  1. Check the project’s release page, operating-system requirements, license and current Valheim support. Record the exact manager release and server build so you can compare them after a change.
  2. Use a separate instance name, save directory and port. Confirm the panel points to the copy, not the live world, before you click Start or Update.
  3. Set one harmless option in the manager. Inspect its saved profile or launch command, restart, and confirm the running server reports the expected value. If you also need a custom flag, verify how the manager keeps it after another save.
  4. Create a manual backup. Locate the archive, check that it contains the expected world files, then use the documented restore function against a separate copy. Do not overwrite the live world to discover whether Restore works.
  5. If world fidelity matters to your group, join the copied server with the same client platform they use and check the expected seed, terrain and progression. A server process starting is not the same as a player confirming the right world.
  6. Review what a game update changes, where logs go, how to stop the process and what the application rollback restores. Keep a copy of the original data until the replacement has passed those checks.

This separates setup friction from recovery risk. A tool with fewer controls may still fit a small group that is happy to maintain one computer. A larger panel may reduce repetitive work but adds its own account, service, permissions or storage to maintain. Choose from the jobs you have actually verified, not the length of a feature list.

When a local manager is enough#

Choose a Windows desktop manager if the host PC will stay online and you are comfortable maintaining its runtime, server files, router and world copies. Consider a web panel if you want browser-based controls and can maintain its host, permissions and service. Check the release date, supported Valheim version, license, backup path and recovery instructions before moving an active world.

If your group wants to leave the home PC out of the equation, Game Hosting’s Valheim page documents an integrated game panel for world, player and settings controls, scheduled restarts, and three free backup slots with scheduling, restore, download and locking. That can reduce routine server chores; it does not guarantee that an incompatible or damaged world can be repaired. When you plan a maintenance window, follow this guide to schedule a Valheim server restart and tell players what to expect.

Quick answers

Does a local GUI keep a Valheim server online when my PC sleeps?

No. A desktop manager runs on the computer where you start it. That machine and its network still need to stay online for friends to connect.

Can a manager overwrite my manual launch arguments?

That depends on the manager and how it stores a profile. Keep a copy of your startup file, inspect the generated launch line, and confirm a setting after restarting before you rely on it.

How should I export a world before changing managers?

Stop the server, copy the complete world files together, and test the copy before replacing the live save. A backup button is useful only if its output can be found and restored.
