You will need

  • Your crew's platforms and game store editions
  • An inventory of available hardware and operating systems
  • A named operator and the hours friends need access
  • A disposable test world before moving an existing campaign

A Valheim dedicated server runs the shared world separately from a player’s open game. You can put that process on home hardware, a rented machine or a managed game service; the useful choice is the one your crew can keep running. This guide helps you select the operating system, installation method and machine location before opening a setup tutorial. Spend about 12 minutes choosing a route and recording who maintains it, then allow separate time for installation and testing. These are documented options, not performance rankings or deployments we benchmarked.

Choose a Valheim dedicated server route you can maintain#

For Valheim groups that want to play without taking on machine maintenance, we recommend Game Hosting. The integrated game panel covers settings and restarts, with three free backup slots for world recovery. A VPS offers operating-system control; this route keeps the work centered on the game.

Choose the route whose routine failures you know how to investigate. Familiarity with the machine and its operating tools usually matters more than having the longest list of automation features.

Start with this selector. The rows combine several choices to give you recognizable arrangements; they are not different editions of Valheim.

Arrangement A useful starting point when… Choose another route when…
Windows PC with the Steam library tool You already manage Windows and can leave that PC available Sleep, travel or shared use regularly interrupts it
Linux machine with direct server installation You maintain Linux and can inspect services and logs Nobody can recover the process after an update or reboot
Docker on compatible home or rented hardware You already understand containers and persistent storage Containers would add a second unfamiliar system to learn
Self-managed VPS You want the machine away from home and can administer its guest OS You expect a hardware rental to include game troubleshooting
Managed game rental with a panel You want a documented control surface and less infrastructure work Required export, update or recovery controls are unclear

If you have already settled on rented infrastructure, compare the Vultr, Hetzner and DigitalOcean VPS options for Valheim by recurring cost, backup terms and the maintenance someone must own. Separate four decisions in your notes: where the machine lives, which OS it runs, how you obtain the software, and how you supervise it. A Linux VPS can run a container. A spare PC can run Linux directly. SteamCMD is a distribution tool, not a competing hosting location.

Once the operating system is the remaining choice, compare Windows versus Linux for a Valheim server by the update, service, save-path and mod tasks your operator can maintain.

Once you have picked the deployment, use the Valheim server launch-argument reference to check the native flags for identity, world path, logs and save behavior against the guide bundled with your installed files.

For a concrete example, a crew with an already-maintained Linux home server might try that machine first. A Windows-only operator with a spare desktop has a different sensible starting point. Neither choice proves the hardware can handle that crew’s busy sessions; measure the selected world before treating the arrangement as permanent. To price the home-power part, use the Valheim electricity break-even worksheet with a wall-meter log and the hours your crew expects to host.

Use this Valheim server requirements and sizing worksheet to compare a real workload with the resources you can actually observe.

Match the server distribution to the operating system#

Use a server distribution documented for the machine you will maintain. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server manual describes Windows and Linux operation and the Steam library tool. That gives you a supported starting point without assuming that every client platform also runs the server process.

On a Windows desktop, the Steam tool is a familiar way to acquire and update the server. It does not turn the entire setup into a graphical wizard: you still choose a launch configuration and check the process output. Once you select that route, follow the Windows installation walkthrough rather than mixing fragments from several tutorials.

SteamCMD provides a command-line acquisition route for machines where you want to manage downloads without the desktop library interface. For the tested command and what app ID 896660 validation proves, see the SteamCMD app ID reference. Keep the installed server’s own documentation beside the configuration you use; this selector still does not provide an argument reference.

The official crossplay FAQ also describes server files in the Microsoft Store PC installation and distinguishes joining on Xbox from running the dedicated process on the console. Write down the server’s operating system separately from each friend’s game edition.

Likewise, the existence of a native Mac game client does not establish a native macOS dedicated-server package. If your only available hardware is a Mac or an ARM-based device, verify the server package, processor architecture and proposed runtime before committing to it. An unverified compatibility assumption is a reason to keep evaluating routes, not a reason to promise an emulator will work.

Decide whether containers simplify your existing setup#

Choose Docker when its operating model is already useful to you: reproducible configuration, an explicit storage boundary and a repeatable way to replace the application environment. It is optional packaging around the server, not a requirement for Linux hosting.

The community Valheim server Docker project documents automated update and backup features. Those are that project’s behaviors, not promises about every image with Valheim in its name. Read the maintainer’s current instructions, release activity and storage requirements before adopting a particular image.

For the current image namespace and its environment defaults, see the image-specific lloesche Valheim Docker settings reference.

For a generic, tested setup, the Valheim Docker walkthrough shows named volumes, clean container replacement, and a separate copied-world load. Its image-specific settings are not defaults for other containers.

If you intend to run community plugins, prepare a package and platform manifest first; the route you choose must expose the files and update controls that list requires.

The critical question is where the world survives a replacement. Identify the persistent storage that holds configuration and world data, the permissions needed to write there, and the separate location used for recoverable copies. A successful container start proves little if the next replacement loses the data you meant to preserve.

Also decide who reads the container logs when an update fails. The layer that made deployment convenient can hide which part failed: image download, storage permissions, server startup or game compatibility. Pick a direct installation instead if that makes diagnosis clearer for your actual operator.

Before approving this route, have that person explain how to recreate the application environment while preserving the world, locate the startup output, and identify the installed server version. If those answers are missing, keep the experiment on a disposable world. A copied configuration file is not yet an operating procedure.

Put the process on a machine that covers your play hours#

Use a machine that stays reachable throughout the crew’s agreed play windows. A separate server process removes the need for the host’s game client to remain open; it does not remove dependencies on power, the network or the computer’s sleep settings.

A main gaming PC can be a useful first experiment. Its limitations become visible when the owner travels, restarts it for unrelated work or closes a laptop. A spare machine separates those activities, but still needs an update and recovery owner. Check that someone can reach its controls during the hours friends actually play.

A VPS changes the machine’s location. It can remove home power and residential connectivity from the hosting arrangement, while leaving guest-OS maintenance and game operation with you. Do not select it solely because the provider has a dashboard: billing controls and machine reboot buttons are different from Valheim world-management tools.

A managed game rental may provide those tools and handle more infrastructure work. Confirm the specific service boundary and the controls your crew needs. Use the hosting selection checklist for commercial requirements instead of treating this deployment table as a provider ranking.

For infrastructure and panel convenience, our recommended choice is Game Hosting’s Valheim hosting. An integrated game panel, free backups and included DDoS protection keep administration in one place while the world runs independently of your home PC. Choose memory for your actual crew and mod list.

Keep world availability separate from simulation behavior. This guide’s requirement is that an authorized player can reach the intended world during the agreed window. It does not claim that every part of the game continues progressing while nobody is connected.

Choose Steam networking or crossplay before opening ports#

Select the backend for the actual client platforms before configuring network access. The official manual distinguishes Steam networking from the crossplay relay, and the same distinction applies whether the machine is at home or rented.

Backend Who it serves Network decision
Steam Steam clients Internet access uses the configured UDP port and the next port; defaults are 2456–2457
Crossplay relay Supported crossplay clients, including Steam Router forwarding is not required; use a documented relay joining route

For the Steam route, match firewall and forwarding rules to the configured port pair and the machine running the process. Use the Steam port map and crossplay relay checklist to configure the selected route and test it from another network. A local connection does not prove an outside friend can reach it. Adding an extra port without knowing which component needs it does not establish that the correct route works.

For crossplay, the manual permits joining through a public address, join code or server list and excludes local or loopback IP joining. That restriction matters even when your test client sits beside the server. Follow the selected backend’s rules instead of applying a Steam-only checklist to a relay connection. When the process is ready but a guest still cannot enter, use this Valheim connection failure checklist to decide which symptom needs a closer look.

Crossplay is available to self-hosters too. Renting is not inherently required just because you cannot configure residential port forwarding. If an upstream shared address or lack of router control is the obstacle, use the route selector for hosting behind CGNAT before choosing a paid alternative. Conversely, a relay does not prove that a particular mod set or temporarily affected platform can join.

Check current official notices if one platform fails while others work. Record the client edition, server build, selected backend and exact error before changing the deployment method. A server running on Linux instead of Windows does not automatically resolve a game-platform compatibility incident.

Assign maintenance before calling the server persistent#

Give one person ownership of the operating record and make sure a second authorized person can use it. Installation ends when the process starts; a maintainable arrangement also answers what happens after the first routine update or unexpected restart.

Keep a short record with the machine or provider account, selected world, launch configuration, log location, save location, separate backup location and recovery owner. Identify the actual configuration used to start the process. Iron Gate recommends preserving a custom copy of the startup script because an update can replace the supplied original.

Add the crew’s agreed gameplay profile to that record using the Valheim world modifier reference. Keep the starting preset, individual exceptions and checkbox rules separate so another owner can check the intended result.

Agree how updates are scheduled and who checks that the process returns. With a container, include image and server-update behavior. With a panel, inspect the documented controls instead of assuming an automatic update includes automatic recovery from every failure. Avoid changing several layers together when a simpler maintenance window lets you verify one change at a time.

For an existing campaign, follow the routine server update checklist to preserve a complete stopped-world copy, update the correct installation and verify remote access before reopening play.

An independent copy and a successful restoration answer different questions. The copy helps preserve an earlier state; a restoration rehearsal shows whether that particular data and procedure can recover a usable world. Keep the original campaign untouched while you establish the destination’s current import procedure.

For a fuller division of work between crew and provider, use the rental versus self-hosting responsibility matrix. Here, finish with a small practical check: the backup operator should be able to find the intended configuration and logs, identify the latest separate copy, and explain who authorizes a rollback.

Test the selected route before moving the campaign#

Approve the deployment only after it passes a small test using the crew’s actual joining route. These checks are tasks for your selected environment, not claims that we tested your hardware, rental or world.

  1. Start with a disposable world

Record the selected world and server identity separately, then inspect the startup output. Confirm the process remains available when the operator closes their own game. Keep an existing campaign out of this first experiment.

  2. Invite an outside player on each required platform

Have a friend outside the server’s home network use the joining details for the selected backend. Check that everyone enters the intended world. For a mixed-platform crew, a successful Steam login does not complete the other platforms’ checks.

  3. Check persistence after a controlled restart

Make a recognizable change in the test world, stop the process using its documented shutdown procedure, and restart the same configuration. Confirm the change remains and the outside participant can reconnect.

  4. Rehearse recovery without replacing the campaign

Preserve a complete test-world export and follow the current restoration procedure on a separate test instance. Verify the intended world and its saved changes. Record any unresolved export or compatibility issue before approving a migration.

  5. Hand over the operating record

Let the backup operator locate logs, identify the running configuration and explain the restart and recovery procedure. Agree when the crew may begin using the destination for real progress.

If startup fails, investigate the process output first. If startup succeeds but the world is wrong, inspect world selection and storage before deleting anything. If only outside access fails, return to the backend’s network requirements. These observations point to different problems; replacing the entire hosting method before collecting them loses useful evidence.

The route is ready when the crew knows where its world runs, how friends reach it, and who can restore service when the usual operator is absent. Keep a failed test as a specific unresolved requirement, then choose whether to repair that route or evaluate the next one.

Quick answers

Does a Valheim dedicated server have to be rented?

No. The dedicated-server software can run on a supported machine you maintain. Its hardware, network and server process must remain available when friends want to play.

Which method suits someone comfortable with a graphical interface?

The Steam library tool offers a familiar Windows download route, although launch configuration still involves editing a script. A provider panel may simplify controls; check its actual update, export and recovery procedures.

Is Docker a different edition of the Valheim server?

No. A container packages the server environment and can automate operating jobs. You still need compatible hardware, persistent world storage and someone who can diagnose failures.

Can an existing world move between hosting methods?

Check that the destination accepts a complete export for your current game version, then verify a restoration on a separate test instance. Preserve the source world until the correct world, access and persistence are confirmed.
