You will need

  • The provider account and payment receipt
  • A list of the platforms your crew uses
  • One friend who can join from outside the server owner’s network
  • The provider’s world export and backup instructions

After a Valheim server rental is paid, check the receipt, confirm the provider’s own running status, verify the intended world and privacy settings, and ask one friend outside your network to join. Before the crew makes progress, find the backup or export path and name the person responsible for it. This checklist helps you accept the service against your crew’s needs; it does not promise a setup time or claim a server was tested here.

Record the bill for your Valheim server rental#

If you are still comparing temporary offers, the Valheim free-trial acceptance guide helps you time the checks and keep recovery testing away from the live campaign.

Start with the actual receipt and account page, not a plan card or a monthly equivalent. Write down the amount charged, currency, billing period, next renewal date, renewal amount, cancellation route and the name of the account owner. If the receipt includes a discount or credit, note when it ends and what the account says will be charged afterward. These details answer the practical question “what did we agree to pay?” before anyone builds a world around the subscription.

For a managed Valheim world, we recommend Game Hosting’s Valheim service when the group wants settings and recovery controls together in an integrated game panel. Its documented plans include three free backup slots with scheduling or manual creation, plus restore, download and lock controls. That gives the account owner one place to check the settings and backup controls before the crew commits its world; it does not prove that a particular copy has been restored successfully.

Use the table as a record, not as a substitute for the provider’s current terms:

Record Where to confirm it Pass condition
Amount and currency Receipt or invoice The charge matches what the payer approved
Billing term and renewal Receipt plus account billing page The next charge and date are clear
Account owner Provider account settings One person is responsible for renewal, export and support
Cancellation and world retention Current provider terms or support reply The group knows what happens to access and files after cancellation

Method: Game Hosting publishes this acceptance checklist based on Iron Gate guidance and provider documentation. We did not rent or operate a server for this article.

Confirm the instance has reached the provider’s running state#

An order confirmation proves that a transaction was recorded; it does not prove that the game process is running or reachable. Open the provider’s own documentation for its status labels and startup flow, then record what the account shows and when you checked it. Providers use different panels and wording, so do not assume that a button called “Start,” “Console” or “World” exists in every interface.

If the instance is still being prepared, follow the provider’s stated support route and include the order reference, selected game, region and the time you checked. Ask what state the service should reach before attempting to join. Do not infer a normal setup window from another host’s marketing or from an “instant setup” label on a sales page.

Once the provider reports the game as running, save the server address or join code using its documented method. If the panel provides a console or logs, use those only as the provider’s guide describes; a green status light is not a substitute for a friend connecting from the route your crew plans to use.

Match the active world to the campaign you chose#

Before anyone explores, decide whether the server should start a fresh world or continue an existing one. If you expect an established save, compare its name and visible progress with the copy your crew intended to move. A newly generated world can look healthy while still being the wrong campaign.

Do not upload, convert or replace a world just to see whether a panel accepts it. Keep a separate copy in a location the group controls, and read the provider’s current import steps first. Valheim’s official 1.0 FAQ says existing Early Access saves remain usable, but that does not validate a particular provider’s upload workflow, mod set or restore path. Older-save conversion steps can have consequences; keep an untouched copy before following them.

If the rented instance already generated a world, ask how the provider backs it up before changing the active world. For a self-managed route, our dedicated-server setup guide covers the installation workflow. For selection questions before committing to a provider, use the Valheim hosting buyer guide.

Set privacy before sharing connection details#

Check who can find or enter the server before posting an address or code in a group chat. Read the provider’s instructions for passwords, permitted-player lists and public listing; controls and defaults can vary by panel. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server manual documents a game-level public-listing flag, but that does not prove how a rental panel exposes it or what its default is.

Choose the connection backend for the platforms your crew actually uses. The official manual says the Steam backend is for Steam users and uses UDP ports 2456–2457 by default. The -crossplay backend uses the PlayFab relay and does not require router port forwarding. It supports the game’s crossplay route, but it does not guarantee that every platform, mod combination or version will join a particular rental.

Some providers publish an interface-specific walkthrough. For example, BisectHosting’s crossplay instructions describe its own panel and join-code flow. Treat that as a Bisect procedure, not a universal menu path. Confirm your own provider’s settings and the game’s current join method before sending details to friends.

Ask one remote friend to load the intended world#

Invite one friend who is not on the server owner’s home network. Have them use the connection details and platform route your group plans to rely on, then ask them to confirm the world name and recognizable progress. This single check can catch a wrong address, an unshared code, a privacy setting or an unexpected fresh world before the whole crew arrives.

Valheim’s FAQ lists supported PC and console editions and describes crossplay, with a vanilla multiplayer limit of ten players. That is game documentation, not a successful join test for your account, a particular provider, or every platform pair. A Steam-only route also differs from the relay route. If your friend cannot connect, record their platform, displayed game version, selected backend and exact error, then use the provider’s current troubleshooting route. Do not buy more memory to fix an unverified connection problem.

One successful join is a useful checkpoint, not a load test. It does not prove that all ten players can join, that your busiest session will perform well, or that a modded setup is compatible. For the full technical launch sequence, use a dedicated launch checklist when that guide is published; keep this page focused on first acceptance.

Find a recovery copy and assign its owner#

Before the campaign accumulates progress, learn which copy you could retrieve and who can retrieve it. Record the copy’s visible date or name, where it is stored, how long the provider keeps it, whether the account owner can download it, and which documented steps restore it. Ask what a restore would replace and how to preserve newer progress first.

Iron Gate’s manual documents the game’s own backup settings, including four rolling copies by default. Those game defaults are not a promise about a rental provider’s schedule, retention, storage location or panel controls. Likewise, a provider saying that it creates automatic backups is not evidence that you can export one or restore it to the intended world. Ask for the current instructions and keep an independent copy when the provider’s terms allow it.

Name a person who can access the billing account and open a support request if the usual host is unavailable. Do not share the billing password with the full crew just to distribute game access. A clear owner and a copy the group can identify are more useful than an undocumented assumption that “the host has backups.”

Accept the rental only after the checklist has evidence#

Use this short record before inviting everyone to make lasting progress:

Check Evidence to keep If it is missing
Bill and renewal Receipt and next-charge date Ask the payer to confirm the term
Running state Provider status and check time Contact provider support using the order reference
Intended world World name and expected progress Stop; confirm fresh-world versus import choice
Privacy and route Current provider instructions and selected backend Do not share the code or address yet
Remote access One friend’s platform, version and join result Record the error and troubleshoot with the provider
Recovery owner Copy date/name, export or restore instructions, responsible account Preserve progress until the recovery path is understood

Mark each line confirmed, failed or not checked. Keep provider statements separate from things your friend actually did. If an essential item remains unknown, ask the provider a specific question and leave the campaign on its original copy until you have an answer. That is a valid acceptance result; it is better than treating a payment receipt as proof that the whole setup is ready.

Quick answers

Can I bring an existing Valheim world after renting?

Often, if the provider supports importing it. Keep an independent copy first, follow that provider’s current steps, and check the uploaded world before your crew continues there.

Does renting a Valheim server give every friend the game?

No. A server rental pays for the hosting service; each player still needs access to Valheim on their own platform.

What if the server panel says online but my friend cannot join?

Check the join route, server backend, game versions and provider instructions, then contact support with the exact error. An online status alone does not prove every connection path works.

Should I invite everyone before checking backups?

First identify a dated copy and learn how export or restore works. A backup listed in a panel is useful evidence, but it is not a successful restore test.
