You will need

  • A dedicated server that already starts successfully
  • Permission to run the server on its network
  • Access to the launch settings used by the running instance
  • Your crew's platforms and a friend available for an outside connection test

You can run a Valheim server without port forwarding by using the game’s native crossplay relay. Start there when your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, you cannot change the router, or you simply want to avoid inbound forwarding rules. The relay still needs a running server and permitted internet access; it is not a promise that every restricted network will work. This guide helps you choose a route in about 10 minutes, then validate it with your crew. Allow separate time for configuration and a remote joining test. No paid tunnel is the starting requirement.

Choose a Valheim server without port forwarding#

Try the native relay first when the actual problem is that you cannot provide a direct inbound route to your existing server. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server manual documents this backend as needing no router forwarding. It is available to self-hosters, including a crew whose players all use Steam.

Write down the obstacle before buying or installing anything:

Your constraint First useful action What that action does not establish
The ISP controls an upstream shared address Try native crossplay relay on the working server That the ISP permits every application or that your server is ready
You cannot administer the router Confirm permission to host, then try the relay That you may bypass the network owner’s rules
A documented requirement prevents using crossplay Record that requirement before evaluating another route That any VPN or tunnel supports the required devices
The machine is frequently asleep or unavailable Choose a machine or operator that covers play hours That a different networking backend fixes availability

These are different decisions. A tunnel subscription cannot keep a powered-off server running. Likewise, being unable to edit a router does not mean you must rent another machine. Resolve access first, then decide who should operate the world.

If you have not selected the machine or installation method yet, use the comparison of dedicated-server routes. Here, the starting point is a server that launches successfully. A broken installation needs attention before an alternative network path can help it.

Identify which part of the network you control#

Find out whether your obstacle is the home router, an upstream provider, or an application policy. A private address on your PC is normal on a home network and does not, by itself, prove carrier-grade NAT.

CGNAT adds address sharing in the provider’s network. Your home router’s controls cannot configure that upstream device. The distinction is why repeating the same local forwarding rule may never produce the public route you expect. The shared-address standard, RFC 6598, describes address space reserved for this service-provider use; it is not a diagnosis of your connection.

Ask the person or company that controls the connection specific questions: Is the service behind carrier-grade NAT? Is running a game server permitted? Are application or outbound connections filtered? If a direct Steam route is genuinely required, ask whether a public inbound-capable address is available and what it costs. Do not order it merely because an old setup guide assumes forwarding.

For a family connection, the network owner may be another person in the house. On a managed network, ask its administrator. Permission to browse the web does not answer whether persistent game hosting is allowed. If the answer is no, choose an authorized hosting location rather than trying successive tunnels.

Finish this step with a plain statement such as “Our ISP confirms shared addressing, but permits this server.” That is more useful than “NAT is broken,” and it gives you a reason to try the relay without changing unrelated settings.

Try the native relay on your existing server#

Select crossplay in the launch configuration that actually starts your dedicated-server process. The official manual identifies this argument as the switch to the PlayFab backend:

text
-crossplay

That is an argument fragment, not a complete launch command. Preserve the working world, storage and other instance settings. The task here is to evaluate a different connection route, not replace a functioning installation with an unrelated example.

  1. Identify and preserve the working configuration

Locate the script, service command or panel setting used by this instance. Save its current configuration. For a supplied startup script, the official manual recommends making a custom copy because updates can overwrite the original.

  2. Select crossplay through that configuration

Add the argument to the actual launch command, or use the documented crossplay control for your existing setup. Keep the selected world and configured port intact. Editing an unused script will not change the running server.

  3. Restart through the server's normal procedure

Stop cleanly, start the intended instance and inspect its new output. The manual identifies Game server connected as the readiness message. Obtain joining details from this running instance before inviting your test player.

Steam clients do not force you to use the Steam-only backend. Conversely, simply publishing a server in a list is not the same as enabling relay networking. Check the actual backend instead of inferring it from the crew’s store editions or the server’s visibility.

Keep the configured port recorded: the manual says it distinguishes multiple servers using one public address even with crossplay. For the underlying backend distinction and general network configuration, refer to the Steam ports and crossplay relay guide. Do not apply its Steam forwarding steps to this no-forwarding trial.

Validate through a supported joining route#

Use a relay-compatible endpoint for the test. A failed connection to a private address or loopback does not demonstrate that crossplay cannot work behind your ISP’s NAT; the official manual explicitly excludes those joining methods for this backend.

Route What to use Check before drawing a conclusion
Join code The code from the intended running instance The friend entered current details for the correct server
Public address The documented public address and configured port You did not substitute the server’s private LAN address
Server listing The intended listed instance The player actually entered the world, beyond finding its name

The exclusion includes loopback:

It also applies when the gaming client and server sit in the same room. Crossplay does not become a LAN-address route just because the devices share a router.

The official crossplay FAQ documents code-based joining for Xbox and explains account permissions that can affect crossplay. Use the current game’s joining interface on each required platform. This is not a claim that every console has identical fields, or that public-address joining is universally unavailable on consoles.

Ask a friend on another network to join the intended world through the selected route. Confirm a recognizable location together, then record the platform, client and server builds, endpoint type, time and result. Keep the password and private connection details out of public troubleshooting posts. A server-ready message alone does not complete this check.

After a controlled restart, obtain current joining details and repeat the outside connection. Treat a successful result as evidence for the tested platform and route, then check the other devices your crew needs. These are acceptance tasks for your environment; we have not performed a multiplayer test on your behalf.

Check platform incidents before replacing the route#

Review current official compatibility notices when one platform fails or a previously working connection stops after an update. A game-version incident is a different problem from lacking access to the router, and changing ISP or hosting provider may leave it untouched.

Iron Gate’s September 18, 2026 patch 1.0.15 notice says crossplay remains functional during its staggered platform rollout. That is a dated official statement, not a guarantee for every client’s account, mod set or network. Check the latest official news for subsequent changes when you run your test.

Do not require identical displayed version numbers without reading the compatibility notes. Platform releases can carry different labels while the developer still considers them compatible. Equally, do not carry an old outage forward indefinitely after an announcement has been corrected or superseded.

Record whether every player fails or only one platform does. If the server never reaches readiness, inspect its startup output first. If another supported client enters but a console cannot, check that console’s edition, account permissions, current compatibility notice and exact error. Those observations narrow the problem without assuming the relay itself is unavailable.

Keep the known working configuration available while investigating. A platform-specific failure deserves a platform-specific check before you spend an evening rebuilding the network around it.

Require a concrete reason before adding a tunnel#

Consider a third-party route only after recording a requirement the native relay does not meet. “Everyone has Steam” is insufficient: those players can still use crossplay. A particular tool or mod may impose another constraint, but confirm it in that project’s current documentation instead of assuming a Steam-only backend is necessary.

A public game tunnel and a private virtual network also ask different things of the crew. Some arrangements place an agent beside the server and expose an endpoint; others require participating devices to join a private network. Do not treat a generic VPN subscription as proof of either capability.

Evaluate a candidate against this checklist before downloading it:

Question Evidence to obtain Reason to reject or pause
Does it carry the required game traffic? Current documentation for UDP and the needed endpoint behavior Only web or TCP forwarding is documented
Who installs software? Host-agent and player-client requirements stated separately A required participant cannot install the client
Does every required device work? Support for the actual platform and proposed joining method Only a desktop example is available for a console crew
Is the connection permitted? Approval under the host network’s applicable rules It depends on bypassing a restriction
What happens after limits or restarts? Current quotas, pricing and endpoint persistence rules A free allowance or temporary address is being treated as permanent

An unknown answer is an unresolved requirement, not compatibility. This guide does not recommend a named tunnel because naming one without checking those facts for your crew would skip the decision that matters.

Also keep networking separate from game compatibility. A tunnel carrying Steam-backend traffic does not, by itself, make that backend accept other editions. If consoles are required, verify the complete game-and-network route before committing anyone to a client installation or subscription.

Decide who keeps the world reachable#

Keep home hosting when the relay works for the crew and someone can maintain the machine during play hours. Rent elsewhere when moving the operating responsibility or physical location solves a separate need. Avoiding forwarding alone is not a reason you must pay for hosting.

The free native route still consumes your hardware, power and internet connection. Its process must run, the machine must remain awake, and someone must handle updates and unexpected restarts. Decide who can reach those controls when the usual operator is away. A connection that works tonight can still be unsuitable for friends playing while that person’s laptop travels.

If the crew wants less home-machine administration, we recommend Game Hosting’s Valheim hosting with an integrated panel and free backups. Renting changes who operates infrastructure; it does not repair a platform incident or an incompatible mod. The native relay remains an option for self-hosters who only need to avoid router forwarding.

Before calling the decision finished, record four things: the chosen route, the constraint it resolves, the successful joining checks you actually obtained, and the person responsible for keeping the process available. Leave any failed platform check explicitly unresolved rather than describing the whole crew as ready.

If native relay passes those checks, save the working launch configuration and current joining procedure. If it fails, preserve the exact failure and investigate that requirement. Your next step should follow the evidence: repair a launch problem, clarify network permission, wait for a documented compatibility fix, or evaluate a qualified alternative. Buying another connection method is useful only when it addresses the obstacle you found.

Quick answers

Can I host Valheim behind CGNAT for free?

The native crossplay relay provides a route without router forwarding or a separate tunnel subscription. You still need a working server, permitted internet access and hardware that stays on; power and internet costs remain.

Why does 127.0.0.1 fail with crossplay enabled?

The official manual excludes local and loopback IP joining for crossplay. Use the running server’s join code, documented public address with port, or server listing instead, even when your client is beside the server.

Can everyone use Steam and still choose crossplay relay?

Yes. Steam clients can use the crossplay backend. An all-Steam crew does not, by itself, create a requirement to use the Steam-only networking backend.

Must console players install a VPN client?

The native Valheim crossplay route uses the game’s supported joining methods without adding a third-party VPN installation step. A separate tunnel or private-network product needs its own device and client-requirement checks.

Will relay hosting work while the server PC is off?

No. The relay changes how players reach the server, not where the world process runs. Its computer and internet connection must remain available during play.
