You will need

  • Each player's Xbox, Microsoft Store or Steam edition
  • The current US Xbox Store and Game Pass pages
  • The name of the account that holds each game license

Valheim is not listed as a current downloadable Xbox Game Pass library title in the US store check for this guide. On October 17, 2026, the Xbox Store listed a $29.99 purchase and said cloud play with Game Pass requires the game purchase. The important distinction is between owning the game, having a subscription benefit, and joining a crossplay world. Use the checks below to match each friend to a license and platform without assuming that a subscription transfers saves or keeps a shared world online.

Check whether Valheim is on Xbox Game Pass right now#

The current US Xbox Store page lists Valheim for $29.99 and does not present it as a downloadable Game Pass library entitlement. It does show cloud play with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, followed by “Game purchase required.” That means the subscription can provide a cloud-play benefit for an eligible owner; it does not replace the game purchase.

What you want to do What the current US listing says What to confirm
Download Valheim from a Game Pass game library The store page shows a purchase price, not an included library download Open the listing while signed in to the account and region you will use
Stream Valheim through Xbox Cloud Gaming Essential, Premium or Ultimate can provide the cloud-play benefit The game purchase is still required, and the offer may vary by region
Buy Valheim for Xbox and PC The listing marks the title as Xbox Play Anywhere Check which account owns the license and which devices it covers

The current listing is the useful source because older pages can still describe Valheim’s former subscription access. Xbox Wire announced that the game would leave the Game Pass catalog on September 30, 2024. That history explains cached search snippets; it does not establish today’s entitlement. Reopen the US Xbox Store listing before you buy because prices, promotions and catalog access can change.

Do not treat a cloud icon or a Game Pass logo as proof that the game is included in the downloadable library. Read the product page’s purchase wording for the specific account. If the listing changes, follow its current terms instead of carrying forward a remembered Game Pass plan name or price.

Separate Xbox and Microsoft Store PC access from Steam#

An Xbox purchase and a Microsoft Store PC purchase belong to the Xbox/Microsoft Store route. Valheim’s current Xbox listing identifies the game as Xbox Play Anywhere. Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ also says a Microsoft Store purchase can be played on Xbox and vice versa.

Edition What the official sources establish Keep separate
Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S The Xbox Store lists console access and Xbox Play Anywhere Each account still needs access to play
Microsoft Store on Windows PC The same Xbox/Microsoft Store entitlement can cover Xbox and PC under Play Anywhere Use the Microsoft Store version for the documented Xbox-to-PC save route
Steam on PC Steam is a separate platform and purchase; it does not launch through the Microsoft Store Crossplay does not transfer the Steam license or synchronize its saves with Xbox

So “I have it on PC” is not enough information when a group is planning access. Ask whether that person launches the Microsoft Store build or the Steam build, then check the license on the account they will actually use. The official Xbox Valheim listing and Iron Gate Crossplay FAQ describe the platform relationship; they do not grant a second person’s account access to a license.

If your question is specifically whether Steam and Microsoft Store players can use the same route, follow the official Valheim crossplay FAQ. This page only separates purchase and access rights; it does not test a particular account or join session.

Check each friend’s platform before planning crossplay#

Iron Gate says Valheim supports crossplay between its platforms. The Xbox Store also lists Xbox cross-platform multiplayer and online co-op. A friend using a separately licensed Steam copy can therefore play with Xbox players when the supported crossplay route is enabled, but that shared world does not turn the Steam license into an Xbox or Microsoft Store license.

For a quick roster, record these items for every person:

  1. The device they will play on: Xbox console or Windows PC.
  2. The edition they will launch: Xbox/Microsoft Store or Steam.
  3. The account with game access, including whether it is a purchase or current subscription entitlement.
  4. Any console online-multiplayer requirement that applies to that account.

The official Crossplay FAQ documents joining an in-game or dedicated world through its join code flow. Follow its current steps on the actual device. This guide does not claim that a specific combination of accounts or builds was tested, and the FAQ cannot verify an individual account’s permissions. If you need the detailed Xbox joining checklist, use the Xbox and Game Pass server-hosting guide; it covers the roster and a disposable-world acceptance session.

One recent version note is narrowly scoped: Iron Gate’s October 15, 2026 Patch 1.0.20 notice warned that a delayed Mac App Store update would temporarily prevent crossplay between that edition and other platforms. It did not announce an Xbox or Microsoft Store PC outage. Check current patch notes if a joining problem appears rather than applying an old platform incident to every edition.

Know which saves sync between Xbox and PC#

Crossplay answers who can join the same world. It does not mean every edition shares the same save files. Iron Gate’s Valheim 1.0 FAQ says Xbox saves can be accessed from a PC when you launch the Microsoft Store version. It also says there is no other cross-platform save progression.

That gives you a limited, documented Xbox-to-Microsoft-Store-PC path. It does not establish a Steam save transfer or a universal character sync. A Steam player may still join an Xbox player’s world through crossplay, but that is different from moving the player’s character or world save between storefronts.

A dedicated-server world is another separate piece of data. It lives with the server process in the configured save location, rather than becoming an Xbox cloud save just because an Xbox player joined. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server manual documents a configurable save directory for the server. Keep a verified copy under the world owner’s control before changing the account, installation or hosting route.

The sources reviewed for this guide do not give a guaranteed Valheim cloud-save retention period after a subscription ends or a catalog title is removed. Do not infer that the save is deleted immediately, and do not promise that it remains available forever. Preserve an independently accessible world export using the supported workflow before you change who owns or operates the world.

Separate game access from Xbox console multiplayer access#

Game ownership and the ability to play online on an Xbox console are separate checks. Microsoft’s current Xbox Game Pass page lists online console multiplayer with Essential, Premium and Ultimate. The current plan names and exact eligibility can change, so check the page for the account and region you plan to use. For dated US game and recurring membership prices, see Xbox access costs.

Question Check
Can this account launch Valheim? Confirm its purchase or current game entitlement on the correct storefront
Can this Xbox account play online? Check Microsoft’s current console-multiplayer requirement for its plan and account
Is the player on PC? Confirm PC game access separately from console membership benefits
Does the group need a server rental? Decide based on world availability and who will operate the host, not on game licensing

Do not assume that paying for a server includes Valheim or an Xbox online benefit. Those are different products. This article does not calculate household totals or establish family-account sharing rights; check Microsoft’s live terms for each account and region before comparing household costs.

Choose who owns the game and who owns the shared world#

Before ending a subscription or changing devices, write down the license holder, the platform version, and where the active world is stored. If it is a dedicated world, identify the server operator and verify that you can retrieve a usable copy. If it is an in-game world, identify the player and account that host it. These checks prevent a change in game access from being confused with a change in world custody.

Use this short decision list:

  • Confirm that each friend can launch the edition they intend to use.
  • Confirm that Xbox online-play requirements are met where they apply.
  • Verify which account and device currently show the world or character save.
  • Export a separate world copy before changing the owner, installation or subscription.
  • Reopen the Xbox listing and current crossplay notes before the group changes platforms.

Friends can use an in-game session without renting a server. If the group already needs the world to stay available while no player’s game is hosting it, compare a dedicated option as a separate operating cost; a server does not grant the game license or preserve an undocumented cloud save. The Valheim hosting page describes that optional route. For the Xbox-specific roster, acceptance checks and world-custody questions, see the full Xbox/Game Pass hosting checklist.

Quick answers

Is Valheim included with Xbox Game Pass right now?

The current US Xbox Store listing shows a $29.99 purchase and says Game Pass cloud play requires the game purchase. Check the listing for your region before making a decision.

Does one purchase cover Xbox and Microsoft Store PC?

Valheim is marked Xbox Play Anywhere, and Iron Gate says an Xbox or Microsoft Store purchase can be played on the other platform. Steam is a separate purchase.

Can Game Pass players join friends who bought Valheim on Steam?

Valheim documents crossplay across platforms, including Steam and Xbox. Crossplay does not merge their game licenses or synchronize Steam saves with Xbox.

What happens to my save if a subscription ends?

Losing access to a subscription title can stop you launching that edition, but the sources reviewed do not state a Valheim cloud-save retention period. Do not assume either deletion or guaranteed access.
