You will need

  • A US Xbox Store account
  • The number of Xbox consoles that will play online
  • The account that owns each game and subscription

How much is Valheim on Xbox? The US Xbox Store lists the game at $29.99, before tax. Online console multiplayer is a separate recurring cost: Xbox lists it with Game Pass Essential at $9.99 per month, while Premium and Ultimate cost more and include the same multiplayer benefit. The store also labels Valheim as cloud playable with Game Pass, but says the game purchase is required. Here is how to separate those charges, estimate a household bill and keep an optional server rental out of the “required to play online” column. Prices and promotions below were checked October 26, 2026; reopen the linked pages before checkout.

Check the current US price for Valheim#

The official US Xbox Store listing for Valheim shows a one-time price of $29.99. It lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, online co-op for 2–10 players, online multiplayer and Xbox cross-platform multiplayer. Store prices can vary by territory, account and sale, so use the purchase page shown after signing in to the account that will own the game.

That $29.99 is the game price, not a year of online play. If you only want the price of the game, stop there. If you plan to join a shared world from an Xbox console, check the console’s online-multiplayer eligibility separately, then add the recurring plan only if that account needs one. Taxes, discounts and any store balance can change the amount charged at checkout.

The checkout total can also look different from a search snippet. Search results may show an old sale, a price in another country or an account-resale offer. Buy from the official store for the region of the Xbox account you will use; a cheaper listing from another region does not tell you whether it can be redeemed on that account.

Separate a Game Pass subscription from the game purchase#

The Valheim store page says it is cloud playable with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, followed by “Game purchase required.” Read that as two separate things: a subscription may provide a cloud-play route, while the game itself still needs to be purchased. The wording is not proof that Valheim is included as a downloadable catalog game on every plan.

Xbox says its game library varies by plan. Before subscribing for Valheim, check the current Xbox Game Pass catalog while signed in, select the plan and device you intend to use, and confirm that the Valheim listing offers the access you want. Do not treat “cloud playable” or the presence of a Game Pass button as a promise that the game is included in that plan’s library.

Cloud play is optional. If you install and play on an Xbox console, the relevant question is whether the account has online console multiplayer access. You do not need cloud gaming just because your friend owns the game on PC or because the group uses crossplay. For edition and save details across Xbox, Microsoft Store PC and Steam, see the Valheim Game Pass edition guide; this cost guide does not promise a specific account can launch on every device.

Compare the Xbox plans that list console multiplayer#

Xbox’s US Game Pass Essential store page and plan comparison list console multiplayer with Essential, Premium and Ultimate. The regular monthly prices displayed on October 26 were:

Plan Regular US price Online console multiplayer Other relevant detail
Game Pass Essential $9.99/month Listed 50+ games; 5 hours of cloud play/month
Game Pass Premium $14.99/month Listed 200+ games; 10 hours of cloud play/month
Game Pass Ultimate $22.99/month Listed 500+ games; 15 hours of cloud play/month

Those are the standard monthly prices displayed by Xbox, not a promise that every account sees the same offer. The Essential listing showed a limited $1 offer for 14 days, then $9.99 per month, and says the subscription continues automatically unless canceled. Check the plan’s checkout and renewal terms for your account. Use the regular price for an ongoing budget; a trial price only applies during its stated promotional period.

If online console multiplayer is the only Game Pass benefit you want, Essential is the lowest-priced plan in this comparison that lists it. Premium and Ultimate add larger libraries and other benefits; they do not make Valheim’s game purchase free. PC Game Pass is a different plan and does not list online console multiplayer, so do not use its price as the cost of an Xbox console membership.

Calculate one-console and two-console budgets#

For one Xbox player starting from no game or subscription, a simple first-year estimate is $29.99 for the game + 12 × $9.99 for Essential = $149.87 before tax. This example assumes a new game purchase and twelve months at the standard monthly Essential price. It excludes any offer, existing membership, game sharing, account-specific eligibility and optional server hosting.

For two Xbox consoles, a conservative separate-account example is 2 × $29.99 for game copies + 2 × $9.99 × 12 for memberships = $299.74 before tax in year one. That is an arithmetic scenario where both players buy a copy and each uses a separate Essential membership. It is not a claim that every household must pay for two copies or two plans.

Microsoft account, home-console and simultaneous-play rules can change what a household actually needs. The official store and plan pages reviewed for this guide do not answer whether your exact account setup shares a game or multiplayer benefit across the two devices at the same time. Check Microsoft’s current account and home Xbox support for the accounts you will use before relying on a shared entitlement. Do not hand over passwords or buy an extra plan until you have checked the signed-in account’s own access and renewal screen.

If your setup shares a benefit, your actual cost could be lower than the separate-account example. If a second player cannot launch the game or access online play, recalculate using the account that needs the additional entitlement rather than assuming the lowest possible total.

Keep the Xbox and PC game licenses straight#

The Xbox listing marks Valheim as Xbox Play Anywhere, and Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ says a Microsoft Store purchase can also be played on Xbox, and vice versa. That is useful when one person moves between an Xbox and a Windows PC using the Microsoft Store edition. It does not establish that a purchase grants a second person a separate license or lets two devices use it simultaneously.

A Steam copy is a separate platform purchase. Iron Gate says Steam owners can still play with friends on other platforms, but crossplay joins separate editions in one world; it does not merge their store licenses. A PC player should check whether they use Steam or the Microsoft Store before you add another purchase to the family budget.

For a household with one Xbox player and one PC player, first record each person’s device, the edition they will launch and the account holding the license. If both players already have access, do not count another game purchase just because they are on different platforms. If one person needs another edition or account, confirm the entitlement on the current store before calculating the total. The edition and save guide covers the broader distinctions; this section only identifies the license question that affects cost.

Add a server only if the world needs independent access#

You can play Valheim online without renting a dedicated server. A player can host from the game, including crossplay with friends on supported platforms. A rented server is a separate operating choice for a world the group wants available when the usual player-host is offline; it does not buy the game, unlock Xbox multiplayer or bypass an account permission.

If the group wants that independent access, Game Hosting’s Valheim plans are a separate monthly line item. The current 4 GB Squad plan is $11.99 per month. Its integrated Valheim panel handles game settings and server operations, and every server has three free backup slots with restore, download and locking controls. Those are documented service features, not a claim that a purchase or restore was tested for your world. For a fuller server budget, see how Valheim server costs add up.

Keep the categories separate: game license, console online access and server rental solve different problems. If a friend is happy to host from the game and keep the world available during play, the server line can be $0. If the crew needs the world to stay up independently, add the current server plan to the household’s recurring budget; do not count it as a replacement for the game or Xbox subscription.

Recheck these three items before checkout#

Prices and catalogs change, and subscription offers can be account-specific. Before you pay, reopen the live pages and write down the amount that appears for the correct US account:

  1. Game: Is the Valheim Xbox listing still $29.99, or is a sale shown? Confirm the edition and account that will own it.
  2. Console multiplayer: Which eligible plan does each Xbox account show, what is its regular renewal price, and when will a promotion end?
  3. Household access: Can each player launch the game and join online from the device they will use? Verify the current account and home-console terms instead of assuming sharing.

Then add optional costs only when you need them. A second game purchase may depend on platform and account entitlements. A dedicated server may help keep the world available, but it is not required by Valheim crossplay. Use the current Xbox Store listing and Game Pass terms as the final check; the dated examples above are a budget, not a quote from Microsoft for your account.
