You will need

  • Know whether the host uses a local co-op session or a dedicated server
  • Note each player's platform and the exact error message

If 7 Days to Die multiplayer is not working, first find out what failed: the server may still be starting, it may be missing from the browser, or it may appear but reject a player. Those are different problems, so opening ports or reinstalling the game at random can waste the evening. Check the server’s ready state, compare platform and version, then follow the branch that matches the symptom. This guide covers the first diagnosis; the focused guides linked below own the longer platform, error-code and port procedures.

Start with the host. A server that has not finished loading cannot accept a join, no matter how often a friend refreshes the list. On a dedicated server, look for the ready message GameServer.LogOn successful in its log or panel console. The Fun Pimps’ current multiplayer troubleshooting guide also recommends checking that the server is started before diagnosing a failed connection.

On a PC hosting a local session, have the host load into the world first and check that the session is set up for other players. On a rented server, look at its live console for startup progress and errors. A process that exists is not proof that world startup completed; use the game’s ready message, then ask one player to try joining.

What the group sees Start here
The host is still loading or the log has errors Wait for startup to finish; if it exits or never reaches ready, use the dedicated server setup guide.
The server is ready, but nobody can find it Check visibility, the right browser tab, name and filters. Use the platform-specific list guide rather than changing join settings.
The server appears, but one or more players cannot join Compare game versions and platform rules, then use the exact error message to narrow the cause.
One player can join while another cannot Check the failing player’s version, platform, EAC state and account restrictions before blaming the host network.

Our isolated V3.2.0 server check reached StartGame done and GameServer.LogOn successful; the log confirms those startup milestones, not that an outside player joined. That distinction matters: a ready server can still have a listing, firewall or compatibility problem. Keep the test narrow and continue to the next row that matches what your group actually sees.

Compare each player’s platform, edition and game version#

Everyone needs a compatible release. Ask each player to read the version shown by the game, and compare it with the server’s version before changing the router. Steam players who opt into Experimental can be on a different build from players who stayed on Stable, and console clients do not automatically move with a PC test branch. The current official network troubleshooting guide says the server and clients must use the same game version; if a group updated at different times, align versions first.

For a current cross-platform group, confirm that each person owns the modern release for PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. The 2016 PS4 and Xbox One editions are separate legacy releases; running one on newer console hardware does not make it the modern crossplay version. Our guide to 7 Days to Die crossplay on PC, PS5 and Xbox lays out the supported combinations.

  1. Read the version on every device

Compare the version number in the PC launcher or game screen, the console game, and the server log or panel. Write them down rather than relying on “we all updated.”

  2. Move the outlier to the shared release

If one PC is on Experimental while the rest are on Stable, select the branch the whole group can use. Do not downgrade or switch a long-running world without backing it up and checking the current update notes.

  3. Retry before changing the network

Start the same world and have one player join. If the error is unchanged, capture its exact text; a version match rules out one cause but does not prove that the network is open.

Check crossplay requirements before changing network settings#

If the failing player is on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S while PC players can join, verify the server’s current crossplay requirements before forwarding ports. The official dedicated-server cross-platform requirements require crossplay to be enabled, EAC to remain on, a public server, no mods, and a maximum of eight player slots; IgnoreEOSSanctions must remain false.

These conditions are cumulative. A server with the right name can still be ineligible if it is private, uses an overhaul, has EAC turned off, or permits more than eight slots. Check the host’s current crossplay controls and warnings. Since V3.0, many game rules use SandboxCode; old serverconfig.xml snippets copied from forum posts may not represent current settings. Do not disable EAC as a casual fix for a crossplay group: that can make the console players ineligible.

If every PC player can join but console players cannot, write down which console generation and game edition each person is using. If only one console account fails, also check that player’s privacy, multiplayer and subscription privileges. A dedicated server cannot grant account permissions or turn a 2016 edition into the modern game. For the supported pairings and edition limits, use the crossplay reference.

For an Xbox player who cannot join one friend’s world, follow the focused checklist for 7 Days to Die Xbox join problems, starting with the edition and account permissions.

Separate server-list problems from failed joins#

“I can’t see the server” and “I can see it but cannot join” do not share one fix. If it is absent from search, verify the server is public where required, search the right browser tab, and remove overly narrow filters. The current official network guide suggests trying the Peer-to-Peer tab and SteamID for applicable PC sessions, checking the correct server name, and testing without a VPN. Do not assume a private invite bypasses the platform’s crossplay rules.

If the server appears but joining fails, preserve the exact message. A version mismatch, EAC rejection, a timeout and a missing account privilege point to different checks. Follow the focused help page for the text you see instead of trying all of them at once. For a server that does not appear in the PC list, keep to the visibility, name, tab and filter checks above; PS5 browser behavior has its own focused guide. Those pages own detailed listing steps, so this hub keeps the first decision short.

Symptom What to confirm next
Missing from the browser Public visibility, correct platform tab, exact name and filters.
Visible, then “could not retrieve server information” Record whether the error happens before or after selecting Join; use the exact-error guide.
Fails immediately after an update Compare client and server version numbers and Stable/Experimental branches.
EAC message or kick Confirm EAC is enabled on the eligible server and the player is launching the protected game.
Only one person cannot join Check that player’s client, platform, VPN and account permissions before changing shared server settings.

Check the host network only after confirming the server is ready#

For a self-hosted PC world, check whether the host is on the same local network as the players and whether the router can accept inbound game traffic. A host behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), a double-router setup or a provider that blocks inbound connections may not be able to expose the server even when the game itself is ready. Test the PC firewall and the router’s forwarding rule against the current official firewall port guide. The published game ports use TCP 26900 and UDP 26900–26903; the base port can change with the server configuration. Do not expose remote administration ports to the public internet as a multiplayer fix.

Our isolated V3.2.0 process showed TCP and UDP bindings on 26900 and a UDP binding on 26902. That is a local process snapshot, not an external reachability test or a replacement for the official port list. It does not establish that a router forwards traffic correctly, that a firewall allows it, or that a friend joined. If you need the complete port procedure, follow the official guide and compare it with the configured base port.

For a rented server, ask the host to verify that it is listening and that its firewall matches the configured game port. Send the host the time of the failed attempt, the exact error and the player platform. A screenshot of the server log can help; never post an admin password, panel token or public IP in a forum thread. If the log never reaches ready, this is a startup problem instead of a router problem.

Choose a managed server only when the host’s PC or network is the cause#

When the diagnosis points to a host PC that sleeps or a home router/CGNAT that cannot accept inbound connections, our first managed-hosting recommendation is Game Hosting for 7 Days to Die. A managed world stays independent of the usual player’s home PC, and its panel exposes installation and startup progress plus the live server console, so the group can see whether it has reached the ready state. That removes the home machine and its port-forwarding setup from this part of the connection path.

It is a conditional fix. Managed hosting will not align a player’s game version, turn a modded server into a console-compatible one, repair an EAC failure, change console account permissions or resolve an outage in the game’s network services. If the group can already play reliably on a local session and the host is online, there may be no reason to rent a server. The dedicated-server guide helps compare a home PC, a self-managed machine and a managed world before the group changes how it plays.

The shortest reliable path is to confirm readiness, match versions and editions, check crossplay eligibility, then test the specific listing or join failure. Keep the error message and one change per retry. Once the symptom is isolated, the matching focused guide can take you through the fix without risking a save or changing settings that were working.

Quick answers

Why can't I join my friend's 7 Days to Die server?

First confirm that the server has finished starting and that every player can run the same game version. If it is listed but the connection fails, check crossplay eligibility, EAC and the exact error before changing router settings.

Why isn't my 7 Days to Die server showing up?

Confirm the server is running, public if your platform requires a listing, and searchable with the right name and filters. Platform-specific browser steps are different, so use the PC or PS5 listing guide for that symptom.

Does everyone need the same version of 7 Days to Die?

Yes. The server and players need compatible released versions; a PC on the optional Experimental branch may be ahead of friends on Stable or console.

Can a dedicated server fix a home-network problem?

It can remove a home router, CGNAT or sleeping host PC from the path when those are the cause. It cannot fix a version mismatch, EAC kick, console account privilege issue or game-service outage.
