You will need

  • DayZ for PC on Steam
  • A shortlist of Workshop mods or maps
  • Each player’s DayZ edition and intended game version
  • A list of mission files the group expects to edit

DayZ server hosting with mods is for groups playing the PC edition on Steam. Before you pay, find out whose account downloads Workshop items, how the host handles dependencies and signing keys, and when it updates the game and mods. A “mod manager” label alone does not tell you whether your exact collection will work.

Game Hosting’s DayZ service is for Steam PC. It uses the service’s Steam account for Workshop downloads, accepts items by search, ID, link, collection or Launcher preset, orders recognized dependencies, and downloads Workshop keys with the mods. That is a documented workflow, not a guarantee that every community stack is compatible. Xbox console and the Xbox-app PC build can share the Xbox pool; Steam PC and PlayStation are separate. This service cannot connect them to a Steam server. Check which DayZ platforms can play together before comparing hosts. For a broader host selection, see our DayZ hosting comparison.

Choose DayZ server hosting with mods for Steam PC#

Confirm the edition each person actually launches. “PC” can mean the Steam edition or the Xbox-app/Microsoft Store build, and those are not interchangeable for DayZ multiplayer. Xbox console and the Xbox-app PC build can share the Xbox pool. Steam PC has its own pool, and PlayStation is separate. The current platform guide explains the pairings; a Steam Workshop server is only a fit for players using a compatible Steam PC setup.

Once everyone is on Steam, write down the server build you intend to run, the map, and the Workshop IDs or collection you want. Ask each host to demonstrate that it supports the same edition and can show the current mod list before you buy. Game Hosting offers a managed Steam PC server with a panel-based Workshop flow; its DayZ hosting page lists the current service details. If your group needs Xbox or PlayStation hosting, choose a provider that explicitly sells that console service. Game Hosting’s PC server cannot bridge platform pools.

Ask whose Steam account downloads each mod#

SteamCMD and the Workshop have account and entitlement requirements that can vary by item. Bohemia’s Linux hosting guide shows a Steam login downloading the dedicated server and Workshop items. That example does not establish a universal rule for every host or every Workshop item, so ask the provider to explain its own download path before you subscribe.

For Game Hosting’s current workflow, the service account downloads Workshop items; the customer does not enter a Steam username or password in the panel. You can add mods by searching, pasting an ID or link, selecting a collection, or importing a Launcher preset. The API resolves known dependencies up to three levels and orders recognized requirements first. “Known” matters: this is not a promise to identify every dependency or validate every custom list.

Before paying, ask the host to show the account boundary and the collection you plan to use. If a host requests your personal Steam credentials, pause and ask why they are needed, how they are stored, and whether another supported workflow exists. Do not assume that a Workshop button means the host uses its own account, resolves dependencies, or will install any private or restricted item.

Check dependencies and load order before you pay#

Workshop pages are the first place to check a mod’s current author, required items, supported game version and install notes. Make a shortlist and verify it against the current pages before you hand it to a host. If one item depends on another, ask whether the panel detects that dependency and places it before the dependent mod. Keep a copy of the IDs and required-item list so you can compare it with the server’s installed list.

Ask the host What to verify
Can you import my exact collection or preset? The final server list contains every item you selected.
Which dependencies are detected automatically? The host identifies recognized dependencies and explains what you must add yourself.
Can I change the load order? You can inspect the resulting order and correct it when an author requires a specific sequence.
What happens when an item is removed or updated? The host explains the error, recovery path and whether a restart is needed.

Try the planned list on a disposable server before moving an established community. Do not infer that a popular pack works because a host offers it as a one-click option: mod authors update on their own schedules, and a DayZ update can change compatibility. For example, as of October 8, 2026, the Community Framework Workshop page had conflicting indexed and direct availability signals during research. We therefore do not recommend that item as currently compatible. Check the author’s live page and the exact server build instead.

Confirm which mods need client files and signing keys#

Some mods change content that the server and each player must share. Players need the matching client-side mods installed and current to join. Bohemia’s modding structure reference describes .bikey files used for signature verification, and its server guide shows -mod for loaded mods. A server-side-only mod uses the separate -serverMod parameter and is not broadcast to clients. The mod author’s instructions and the host’s setup determine which path applies.

Installation path Check before inviting players
Steam Workshop item Whether the host downloads it, updates it and installs its signing key.
Manually uploaded mod Who uploads the folder and where the matching .bikey must go.
Client-required mod How players install the same version, such as through the Steam Workshop or a compatible launcher.
Server-only mod Whether the author marks it server-side and the host supports that launch configuration.

Game Hosting’s Workshop workflow downloads keys with Workshop mods. For a manual upload, the customer must place the matching .bikey file in the server’s keys directory. If you are setting up a list yourself, follow the DayZ mod installation walkthrough for the steps and common join errors. Do not treat “keys included” as proof that a host has tested your particular mod set.

Choose when the game and mods update#

Ask whether game updates and Workshop updates happen together, at startup, on a schedule, or only when you request them. Also ask whether an update can be delayed while an author checks compatibility. Write down how to return to the previous configuration if the server fails to start or players get version-mismatch errors.

In Game Hosting’s panel, the owner can turn off automatic game updates; enabled game files sync on start, and Workshop mods sync on start. This lets an owner choose the game-update setting, but it does not pin a Workshop item to an older version or certify a mod after an update. Confirm the actual behavior of your host, and coordinate updates with your players before restarting a live community.

The date matters. On October 8, 2026, Bohemia’s DayZ news feed listed 1.29 as the latest Stable release and said 1.30 was in Experimental testing. Bohemia’s Badlands announcement said the expansion and update were planned for October 15, 2026. Those are dated status checks, not a promise of a future rollout. Recheck the official news and the mod authors’ pages when you are ready to install.

Match the map and downloadable content to your group#

Choose the map before building the rest of the mod list. Official maps can have separate mission files and player access requirements. Do not assume that a server owner’s entitlement automatically grants every player access to paid content. The current DayZ Badlands Steam listing described Nasdara as a 267 km² map and listed October 15, 2026 as its planned release date at the time of this check. We could not confirm the exact entitlement rules for every player/server configuration, so check Bohemia’s release information and the players’ store editions before choosing Nasdara.

Community maps are Workshop content created by their respective community authors. Check the author’s instructions and required mods, and credit the map makers when you describe the server. They are not our work. Game Hosting’s panel currently exposes its documented official mission choices and lets you edit mission files; it does not document a one-click community-map catalog. Ask support whether your exact map mission can be installed and what files you must provide before buying.

Other hosts may have a different map workflow. For example, GTXGaming currently lists ten community maps for one-click installation, including Namalsk Island, Deer Isle and Banov. That is a real convenience if one of those is your target; follow the provider’s map instructions and make a backup first. A host’s catalog does not prove that every community map or mod bundle works with every game build.

Check mission files, memory terms and recovery#

If your group plans to tune loot or gameplay, ask where the host exposes mission files such as types.xml and cfggameplay.json, and whether it offers an editor or file manager. Bohemia’s Gameplay Settings reference documents cfggameplay.json; its Central Economy mission-file guide covers mission economy files. Check the current file and map before changing anything. Back up the existing mission and persistence first, and ask how to restore it if the server fails to load. A map change or wipe can affect saved progress.

Before checkout, get clear answers to these questions:

  • What memory does the plan allocate, and can I see current usage?
  • Are player counts guidance or a tested capacity for my exact mod list?
  • Is there a limit on Workshop items, storage or file uploads? Where is it enforced?
  • Can I create, download and restore backups, and what exactly do they contain?
  • Can I download my mission files and persistence before I make a change?
  • Who can help if the server stops after a game or mod update?

Do not rely on universal RAM numbers from a generic “vanilla, light mods, heavy mods” chart. A mod list, AI, map, player load and persistent world can change resource use, and we do not have a controlled benchmark for every workload. The same goes for a maximum mod count: ask for the host’s current enforced limit rather than treating a marketing number or code constant as a panel limit.

Use this checklist before you subscribe#

Keep the decision tied to your actual group and mod list. A host is a better fit when it can show the workflow you need, explain its boundaries, and give you a way to recover from a failed update. For Steam PC groups that value a panel-based Workshop import, recognized dependency ordering, keys downloaded with Workshop items, an explicit game-update choice and mission-file access, Game Hosting’s DayZ service is one option to compare. These are documented service features, not a guarantee that an untested stack will work.

The choice can also depend on a specific tool. If one-click community maps are central to your plan, GTXGaming currently advertises that catalog. Other providers advertise Workshop installs and mod tools too; compare the exact interface, dependency handling, update behavior and recovery process rather than assuming a feature is unique. Ask each host to walk through your collection and answer the checklist above before you commit.

Quick answers

How do you host a DayZ server with mods?

Choose a host for the same DayZ edition your group owns, then check Workshop download access, dependencies, signing keys, update timing and file recovery. For setup steps, see our [DayZ mod installation guide](/blog/dayz/install-dayz-server-mods/).

Do players need to download DayZ mods too?

Players need the client-side Workshop mods required by a server, and their versions must match the server. A server-only mod is different; ask the mod author or host which items players need before inviting everyone.

Do I need to give a host my Steam password?

Ask whose Steam account downloads Workshop items and whether the host needs any credentials. Game Hosting uses its service Steam account for its documented Workshop workflow; customers do not provide their Steam login.

Can Xbox, PlayStation or Game Pass PC players join this DayZ server?

No. This guide and Game Hosting’s DayZ service cover the Steam PC edition. Xbox console and the Xbox-app PC build can share the Xbox server pool, while Steam PC and PlayStation are separate; a Steam server does not bridge those editions. Check [which DayZ platforms can play together](/blog/dayz/is-dayz-crossplay/) before choosing a host.
