You will need

  • DayZ for PC on Steam
  • A group decision about who will maintain the server
  • A Workshop collection or mod list, if your group plans to use mods

How to host a DayZ server comes down to who will keep the machine online and handle networking, updates and backups. For a Steam-PC group, run it at home if you already have a suitable always-on PC and want to administer it; choose a VPS if you want remote root access and are comfortable running a Linux server; rent managed DayZ hosting if you want a control panel and someone else to operate the machine. This guide compares those responsibilities so you can pick a route before spending money. It covers Steam PC only: Xbox, PlayStation and the Microsoft Store/Game Pass PC build cannot join a Steam server.

Confirm your group can join the same server#

This choice only works if everyone uses the same DayZ platform. A dedicated server rented for the Steam PC edition does not connect friends playing on Xbox or PlayStation. The PC Game Pass release belongs to the Xbox version, according to Bohemia’s April 2026 community spotlight; Bohemia’s DayZ FAQ also distinguishes PC and console servers. If everyone is on Steam PC and nobody wants to operate the machine, we recommend Game Hosting’s DayZ service for its DayZ settings, scheduled restarts and three free backup slots with restore and download controls.

Your group plays on Use a server for Does a Steam PC server fit?
Steam on Windows PC Steam PC Yes
PC Game Pass / Microsoft Store Xbox build No
Xbox console Xbox No
PlayStation PlayStation No

If one friend is on another platform, settle that before comparing RAM or prices. A different hosting route cannot bridge separate game builds. Choose a console-compatible server offer for a console group; Game Hosting’s DayZ offer is specifically for Steam PC. For more on the platform split, see whether DayZ is crossplay.

Compare what you take on with each route#

Home hosting trades a recurring rental charge for responsibility over a PC, network and maintenance. A VPS trades a provider’s managed game panel for more operating-system control and more server administration. Managed DayZ hosting costs a monthly fee and handles the underlying server machine, while you still make game and community decisions.

Route You take care of Best fit when Common reason to change routes
Home PC Keeping the PC and internet available, server setup, router/firewall access, updates, mods and backups You already have a suitable machine, want hands-on control and can tolerate downtime during maintenance The PC needs to stay on too often, remote access is unreliable, or maintenance becomes a chore
VPS or dedicated machine Operating system, server installation, security updates, DayZ updates, network rules, mods and recovery copies You want remote access or root control and know how to administer a server You do not want to troubleshoot the OS and game stack or build your own admin workflow
Managed DayZ host DayZ configuration, player and community choices, and any provider-specific mod/update tasks You want a game-focused panel and prefer the provider to operate the machine You need a capability, access level or pricing model the provider does not offer

The game server itself still needs sensible configuration and compatible files on every route. Renting does not make a Steam PC world cross-platform, and a VPS is not automatically easier just because it lives in a data center. If you would rather operate the server yourself, the full home setup guide covers that separate task; this page is for choosing the route.

Choose home hosting if the upkeep is acceptable#

A home PC can be a reasonable choice for a small friend group when the machine is already available and you are happy to run the server software beside your normal responsibilities. There is no hosting subscription for the machine itself if you already own it. That does not make the route costless: account for electricity, internet service, hardware wear and the time you spend configuring and maintaining the server. For a focused comparison of using an existing PC, spare hardware and credit-funded hosting, see what free DayZ server hosting really costs. Your actual costs depend on your home setup, so a universal “free” total would be misleading.

Before choosing home hosting, answer these questions:

  • Can the PC stay on whenever the group expects to play, including when you are away?
  • Does your connection and router let friends reach the server, and are you willing to troubleshoot that path?
  • Can you install DayZ Server, read its configuration, update it and keep recovery copies?
  • Will you be available when a game update or mod change interrupts the server?

If the answer is yes, self-hosting may be enough. The server’s availability follows your PC, home power and internet connection, so friends cannot join while that setup is offline. Check your internet provider’s terms and local network setup before making a public service available. Do not copy a port range from a random guide: Bohemia documents a configurable game port and query-port setting, but the right network rules depend on the configuration. The DayZ server configuration reference is the source to check, and B01’s self-hosting walkthrough covers the setup sequence.

Choose a VPS only if you want to administer it#

A VPS gives you a remote machine and, depending on the offer, operating-system or root access. It does not install and maintain your DayZ community for you. You still need to choose a suitable machine, install the server, configure access, apply security updates, manage DayZ versions, handle mods and keys, and test that your backups can be restored.

Bohemia provides a Linux DayZ server guide, so Linux is a documented option. The guide’s existence does not mean every VPS is a fit: verify the provider’s supported operating system, memory allocation, storage, network policy and remote console access before paying. Do not buy a size based on an unsourced player-count promise. Your map, mod collection and operating pattern affect resource use, and this article does not include a performance benchmark.

Pick a VPS when the control is part of the point and you are prepared to own the server stack. If you mainly want the game running for friends and do not want to learn system administration, compare managed hosting instead. Confirm the current VPS terms, operating system and resources directly with its provider before paying.

Rent managed hosting if you want less machine maintenance#

For a Steam-PC group that does not want to leave one person’s home computer running or administer a VPS, the managed service also downloads Workshop items through its own Steam account rather than asking you to supply your personal Steam login. These are specific operating conveniences, not a promise that every server issue disappears.

The current monthly plans list 8 GB for $16.99, 12 GB for $24.99 and 16 GB for $32.99. The plan pages recommend populations of 10, 30 and 60 players respectively; those figures are recommendations, not hard player caps. Compare the included memory and the controls your group needs, then review current terms on the product page. Home and VPS costs vary too much to claim managed hosting is always cheaper.

After you decide to rent, use the DayZ host checklist to compare a provider’s memory, update controls, Workshop workflow and backup recovery before you choose a plan.

Managed hosting still requires you to choose your map, settings, admins and mod collection. Confirm that the exact map and mod versions your group wants are supported before purchase, especially around game updates. If your priority is deciding whether a private community is worth maintaining at all, what a DayZ private server means for friends explains the group and access choices.

Plan updates and Workshop mods before you invite friends#

All three routes need the server build and clients to agree. Bohemia’s Linux guide documents the stable server app, a separate Experimental app, and Steam Workshop delivery; the Workshop collection alone does not guarantee that a server is ready. Mods can depend on other mods and can require server keys. You need a way to download the files, keep versions compatible, load the right dependencies and confirm clients can join. On a home PC or VPS, you own that workflow. With a managed host, check how its panel imports collections and handles dependencies, keys and updates.

Version timing matters when your group plans a wipe or a modded season. On October 8, 2026, Steam listed DayZ 1.29 as stable and 1.30 as Experimental, with the Badlands map (Nasdara) announced for October 15. That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of what is available by the time you read this. Check the official DayZ Steam news and your host’s current compatibility before scheduling an update. Do not assume a provider supports Experimental builds or that a planned map is available just because it has been announced. The player DLC entitlement for Nasdara was not confirmed in the source reviewed for this guide, so check the official release details before building a plan around it.

Back up before changing the map, mod set or server version. First identify the world and configuration files your setup uses, then confirm what the backup contains and how to restore it; never wipe storage based on a generic filename or a guide for another installation. A managed host’s backup controls can simplify the operation, but you should still know which restore point you would use and what it covers.

Make the choice with a short upkeep check#

Choose home hosting if the PC and network are already there, and you want to own installation and downtime. Choose a VPS if remote access and root control are worth learning and maintaining the operating system. Choose a managed DayZ host if the monthly plan fits and you prefer a game panel, scheduled restarts and built-in backup controls over operating the machine yourself.

Before paying or moving a world, confirm these four details:

  1. Everyone has the Steam PC edition and can join the same server.
  2. The route covers your group’s map, memory needs and Workshop collection.
  3. You know who will install updates, handle mod dependencies and restore a backup.
  4. The current plan terms and billing match your expectations.

If you choose to run the server at home, continue with the Steam PC setup walkthrough. If you prefer a managed Steam-PC server, check the current DayZ hosting plans. Either way, decide who owns the updates and recovery before friends build a long-running world. If you are leaning toward a VPS, compare the detailed DayZ VPS vs game server hosting responsibilities before you choose who will maintain the operating system.

Quick answers

Is it free to host a DayZ server at home?

There may be no rental bill if you already own suitable hardware, but power, internet service, hardware wear and your maintenance time still count. Check your ISP terms before hosting a public server.

Can my friends play when my PC is off?

No. A home server stops being available when its host PC or network goes offline. A rented server runs on the provider’s machine instead.

Can Xbox or Game Pass PC players join a Steam DayZ server?

No. This guide and Game Hosting’s DayZ service are for the Steam PC edition. Xbox, PlayStation and the Microsoft Store/Game Pass PC build use separate server pools.

Do I need Linux to host DayZ on a VPS?

No single operating system fits every VPS setup. Bohemia publishes a Linux dedicated-server guide, but you still need to install, secure, update and back up the server yourself.

Can I use Workshop mods with any hosting route?

DayZ PC supports Workshop mods, but the server and players need compatible versions, required dependencies and the correct mod keys. The setup and update work differs by route.
