You will need

  • DayZ for PC on Steam
  • A decision about who will keep the server online
  • A mod list, if the group plans to use Workshop content

You can run a DayZ server without a monthly hosting bill if you already have a PC to leave online, or if a credit-funded service currently gives you enough credits. Those routes still use electricity, internet capacity, admin time or recurring credits; Game Hosting’s DayZ service is for Steam PC and its free offer is a one-time 24-hour trial, not ongoing free hosting. If you want managed Workshop downloads and backups after testing, Game Hosting’s DayZ service starts at $16.99 per month for 8 GB, while the trial gives you one day to try that same server without a card.

Can you host a DayZ server for free?#

Yes, but “free” describes the invoice, not every cost. You can use a computer you already own, try a credit-funded server if its current offer covers your needs, or test a paid service during its trial. Each choice shifts the cost to equipment, power, availability, recurring credit claims or a later monthly bill.

Start by confirming everyone plays DayZ on Steam for PC. Game Hosting serves the Steam PC edition; this offer does not support Xbox, PlayStation or the Microsoft Store/Game Pass PC build. Those builds do not share this Steam server. If friends use a different platform, choose a compatible offer before comparing hosting routes. If the group is mixed-platform, stop and choose a service that supports the platform everyone uses before comparing prices.

Route What the listing may cost What you supply or check
Gaming PC at home No hosting charge A PC kept on, internet, router/firewall access and administration
Spare PC at home No hosting charge Hardware, measured electricity use, network access and maintenance
Credit-funded offer Potentially $0 while credits cover usage Credit rate, how credits are earned, when the server stops and current file-retention terms
Game Hosting trial $0 for one 24-hour test Eligibility limits; after the trial, keep the same server on a paid plan or let it stop
Monthly managed plan Game Hosting’s 8 GB DayZ plan is $16.99/month Ongoing bill; the host operates the machine and provides its documented panel features

For a Steam-PC group that does not want a friend’s computer or router to be the point of failure, Game Hosting is a practical managed option: its panel downloads Workshop items with the service’s own Steam account, and the plan includes three backup slots. The 8 GB plan is $16.99 per month after the one-time trial. That is a convenience choice with a recurring price, not proof that renting costs less than hardware you already own. See how to choose a DayZ host for the broader checklist.

Run the server on a gaming PC you already own#

Using your current PC can make the hosting line item zero, but the server is only available while the computer and its network are available. Bohemia’s Linux dedicated-server example uses SteamCMD with a logged-in account and the stable server app ID 223350; use the current official Linux hosting guide for the supported process rather than copying commands from an old forum post. The server owner still has to install, start, update and troubleshoot the instance.

For a private evening with a few friends, the tradeoff may be fine if the PC is already on and you are comfortable maintaining it. A public community expects a different schedule: the host computer must remain on when the organizer is away, and home internet or router changes can interrupt access. Ask your internet provider about its terms and data limits, and have the person who runs the machine check the local firewall and router setup. This guide does not give a universal port list because the correct network settings depend on the server configuration and how your network is arranged.

Do not count the gaming PC as “spare” if its owner needs it for play or switches it off overnight. In that case, the server’s uptime follows the owner’s habits. Our guide to renting, self-hosting or using a VPS helps assign those responsibilities; the complete home setup guide covers the actual installation path. If your goal is a private world for friends, see how to set up that group server before choosing a route.

Price a spare PC with your own electricity rate#

A spare computer avoids buying a server plan only when its operating cost and upkeep make sense to you. There is no reliable universal dollar estimate for a DayZ server PC: power draw varies with the actual machine, its workload and how it is configured. Measure the computer at the wall with a power meter while it runs the workload you expect, then use your own utility rate.

The calculation is: measured watts ÷ 1,000 × hours running × your electricity price per kWh. For example, if your meter reports a value in watts and your bill gives a price per kilowatt-hour, substitute those figures and the hours you expect the server to run. This gives an electricity estimate only; it does not include hardware wear, internet service, replacement parts or your time.

Compare that result with the plan’s current monthly price and the amount of time you are willing to spend maintaining the server. If the machine already runs most of the day, the incremental power may matter less to your household than if you would leave it on overnight solely for DayZ. Do not buy a spare machine based on an assumed payback period. If the server PC would be a new purchase, include its price and replacement risk in your comparison too.

Understand an hourly-credit DayZ offer#

AxentHost currently advertises a credit-funded DayZ option. Its DayZ page lists a 6 GB server at 30 credits per hour and says credits can be claimed on the web, with up to 30 additional credits per hour available through its mobile apps. The site also describes daily spins and says a server stops when its credit balance runs out. These are provider statements, not an independent uptime test; check the current AxentHost DayZ offer and its terms immediately before relying on it.

Treat the credit balance as a recurring operating requirement. Work out how many credits the selected memory size consumes per hour, how often you can claim or earn credits, whether the advertised sources are available to you, and what happens at zero balance. The current page does not establish a guaranteed uptime level or a precise data-retention period after credits run out. Do not assume that a paused server preserves files indefinitely; save a copy of anything valuable using the provider’s supported export or backup process before you depend on the service.

This route can fit a group that accepts scheduled play and wants to avoid a monthly subscription while credits last. It may be a poor match if nobody wants to maintain the balance or if the group expects the world to be reachable at any time. Credit offers change, so capture the rate and conditions shown for your selected DayZ configuration rather than relying on another game’s older comparison.

Check whether a free route supports your mods and play schedule#

“Supports mods” is not one setting. A Workshop item can require additional dependencies, server-side files, a matching client version or a key file placed in the server’s key directory. Bohemia’s hosting examples show a logged-in SteamCMD workflow for downloading Workshop content and copying example keys, but the required steps vary by mod. Check the author’s current Workshop page and installation instructions for each item, then confirm the server build, client build, dependencies and keys before inviting the group.

The Steam account detail matters too. Bohemia’s official guide uses a logged-in account; an older open Valve issue reports a Workshop download difference between an account that did and did not own DayZ, but it is an unanswered user report rather than Steam policy. Do not treat that issue as a universal rule. Game Hosting downloads Workshop files with its own service account, so customers do not need to hand over their Steam password. That can remove account-sharing from the hosting decision, though it does not guarantee every mod or community map is compatible.

Ask how often the free route can be available and who applies game and mod updates. A server owner running a home computer has to schedule updates and coordinate with players; a credit-based service may stop if its balance runs out. If you plan to use Workshop content, our DayZ mod guide explains the server/client distinction, and the installation guide covers the file workflow. Avoid removing mods, changing maps or wiping storage until you have identified the affected files and verified a backup and recovery method.

Calculate when a monthly plan is worth it#

Paying can be worthwhile when the group values someone else operating the machine more than it values a $0 hosting line. Compare the actual recurring plan price with the route you would otherwise use: measured electricity, credit-earning effort, computer availability, internet constraints and the organizer’s maintenance time. If you cannot put a defensible dollar amount on your time, keep that part as a practical preference instead of inventing a break-even number.

Game Hosting’s DayZ plans currently start at $16.99 per month for 8 GB. The one-time trial lasts 24 hours after the server is ready, requires no card, and lets you keep the same server and world on a paid plan or let the server stop. It is useful for checking the panel and your own setup for one day; it is not a way to run a server free every month. For a step-by-step acceptance list, see what to test before you commit to a DayZ server trial. Read the current trial terms and DayZ plan details before deciding, since eligibility and plan details can change.

Choose home hosting if the group has suitable hardware, accepts the schedule and wants to administer the system. Choose a credit offer if its current rate and stop conditions fit the way the group plays. Choose paid hosting if the recurring cost is acceptable and you prefer a managed server, documented backups and Workshop downloads without sharing a personal Steam login. For the wider rent-versus-home decision, compare the three hosting routes. If the monthly bill is the sticking point, first see whether your friends can share a private server plan and its responsibilities.

If a free route does not fit and your group is considering a paid plan, see the budget DayZ hosting checklist for current price and plan-fit questions.

Quick answers

Can you host a DayZ server for free?

Yes, if you already own the hardware or use a credit-funded offer that is available to you. The server still costs electricity, internet, time or credits, and Game Hosting’s free offer is a one-time 24-hour trial rather than ongoing free hosting.

Is there a free way to host a DayZ server with mods?

A home server or a credit-funded host may work if the server can install each item’s required files and keys. Check the mod author’s current instructions and keep client and server versions aligned.

Can I host a free DayZ server on Xbox or PS5?

Game Hosting’s DayZ service is for the Steam PC edition only; it cannot host Xbox or PlayStation players.

Is Game Hosting’s DayZ trial free forever?

No. It is a one-time 24-hour trial without a card. The server stops afterward unless you choose to keep the same server on a paid plan.
