You will need

  • Your friends' devices and game storefronts
  • The number of people who will play simultaneously
  • Whether everyone can play on the same schedule

Yes, Palworld is multiplayer: 4-player co-op including the host, or dedicated-server play for 32. Co-op requires the host to stay online. Crossplay supports Steam, Xbox, Microsoft Store PC, PS5, and Mac. You can also play solo. For a small group that plays together, built-in co-op is usually the place to start; you do not need to rent a server just because your friends use different platforms. Here is what to check before buying the game, inviting the fifth friend, or choosing where your shared world will live.

Is Palworld multiplayer or single-player?#

Palworld supports both, and you choose around the people you want to play with. The publisher’s Steam description lists single-player, online co-op for 4, and dedicated-server play for 32. Those numbers describe different ways to play, rather than a requirement to gather a full group.

Your starting point People playing together What you need to know
Solo 1 You do not need other players to begin
Standard co-op 4 total, including the host One person runs the world inside their game
Dedicated server Advertised support for 32 Check that particular server’s capacity and access rules

For co-op, count the organizer. You plus 3 friends fills the normal group; you plus 4 friends does not. Changing the platforms people use does not create an extra place. If your group chat contains 6 people but only 3 ever play at once, simultaneous attendance is the number that matters.

The dedicated-server figure is also not a promise that every server you find has 32 available places. Its operator can configure its player capacity, and other players may already be using it. Ask about the world you intend to join rather than treating a store-page number as a reservation.

Playing solo first is fine. Just distinguish learning the game alone from establishing the permanent world for your group: friends joining another host later should not assume that your solo progress automatically appears there.

Choose how your shared world is hosted#

There are 3 common hosting choices: built-in co-op, a dedicated server someone runs, or a dedicated server someone rents. The last 2 are operating choices for dedicated play. They do not turn renting into a separate game mode.

Start with built-in co-op

One friend hosts the world and shares its invite code. That person also plays, so this is a sensible starting point for 2–4 people who meet at the same time. There is no separate server rental to arrange. Agree who will host before the group spends its first evening building, because that person’s session becomes the place everyone returns to.

Run a dedicated server yourself

Dedicated-server software runs separately from the game client. Pocketpair explains this distinction in its server overview: the person operating the server can close their own game while the server keeps running. Someone still needs to maintain the machine and make it reachable. “Dedicated” does not mean the computer can be turned off.

Rent a dedicated server

Renting puts the server on a provider’s infrastructure and can reduce the work your group handles at home. It adds a recurring cost and a provider relationship, so verify access, save export, and what the plan actually includes before choosing one. A rental is useful when independent availability matters; it is unnecessary just to try co-op with a friend.

If that independence is what your group needs, check Game Hosting’s Palworld plans and current availability; capacity was closed when checked on September 16, 2026, and joining the waitlist does not provision a server.

Check your friends’ platforms before buying#

Friends on different supported platforms can play together. Current Pocketpair documentation lists Steam, Xbox including Microsoft’s Windows edition, macOS, and PS5. Co-op also supports crossplay, so a Steam player and an Xbox player do not need a dedicated server solely to meet each other.

Write down both the device and the storefront. “PC” can mean Steam or Microsoft Store, and their dedicated-server joining routes differ. Xbox-family and PS5 players use the in-game Community server list; Steam and Mac players can also use an address and port. Pocketpair’s connection guide explains those routes. An address that works for one friend is not automatically the instruction to send everyone.

On PS5, multiplayer is online and requires PS Plus. The official PlayStation listing lists 1 local player and online play for 4. Plan for each friend to use their own supported device and game access; do not buy on the assumption that adding a second controller creates a shared-screen co-op session.

Before buying a different edition just to match a friend, check the Palworld crossplay platform guide. Enabling crossplay and choosing the correct joining route may be all you need. If you are switching stores to keep an existing character, that is a separate save question, not something a successful crossplay connection proves.

Decide what happens when the host leaves#

A co-op world is available while its host’s game session is running. If that friend closes the session for the evening, guests cannot carry on in the same world by themselves. The world has not become a permanent public server because several people visited it.

Consider 2 different schedules. If you and a friend always play on Friday nights, the host-online requirement may make no practical difference. One person starts the world, the other joins, and both finish together. There is little reason to add server administration before that arrangement causes a problem.

If one friend plays in the afternoon and another only after midnight, co-op ties both to the host’s availability. A dedicated server separates the shared world’s availability from the organizer’s game session. Its server process, machine, and network must still stay operational. Sleep mode, shutdowns, maintenance, or an unreachable connection can interrupt it.

Set expectations before your group chooses a home. Who will start the next session? Can friends visit when that person is busy? If everyone expects independent access, arrange a running dedicated server rather than promising that an ordinary co-op invite will work at any hour. The useful distinction is whether the world remains reachable after the organizer closes the game.

Separate game access, online access, and hosting costs#

Built-in co-op does not require a separate hosting subscription, but that does not make every part of online play free. Game access, console online multiplayer, and optional server hosting are different items. Paying for one does not automatically cover the others.

Item Who needs to check it? What it covers
Access to Palworld Every player The game on their supported device and account
Console online multiplayer access Console players The platform’s required membership for online play
Optional dedicated-server rental Whoever arranges rented hosting Running the shared server under that provider’s plan

PS5 requires PS Plus for online play. Xbox console players should check a membership with online console multiplayer using the current Xbox plan comparison. Membership names, included games, and purchase offers can change; confirm the entitlement on the account you will actually use.

A friend’s rented server does not grant you a game license or replace your console membership. Conversely, owning the game does not oblige you to buy hosting. Start with the smallest arrangement that meets the group’s needs, then reconsider if the player count or schedule outgrows it.

Self-hosting avoids paying a hosting provider, but someone still supplies the machine, power, connection, and maintenance time. Treat that as a responsibility your group accepts, not as a reason to assume all server options cost nothing.

Agree which world your group will return to#

Your group’s progress belongs to the world you play in, so decide who is responsible for that world before settling down. In co-op, the host’s saved world is the shared destination. On a dedicated server, the server holds that world independently of the organizer’s game client.

Keep a simple group message naming the host or server and the joining route. If a friend offers to host next weekend, establish whether they mean reopening the existing world or starting a different one. Using a familiar world name does not transfer the original bases or characters.

Crossplay means supported platforms can meet. It does not promise that a character automatically follows every change of host, account, or storefront. There are specific ecosystem features: the Xbox listing includes Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud saves, but those are not universal Steam-to-PlayStation transfer services. Use the guide to crossplay, saves, and purchases if changing devices is part of your plan.

For a new group, simply agreeing on one starting world prevents confusion. For an established group, moving it is a separate task that deserves its own checks, rather than an improvised fix when someone cannot join.

Pick the next guide for your first session#

Once you know the headcount, platforms, and schedule, choose a route and try it with one friend. You do not need to solve every possible hosting question before your first shared session.

  1. Choose the mode around actual attendance

Start with co-op if everyone fits within 4 places including the host and accepts that host’s schedule. Look into dedicated play when you need a larger simultaneous group or independent access. Record that choice so friends do not start separate worlds while waiting.

  2. Follow the matching joining instructions

Use our guide to how Palworld multiplayer fits together for the co-op invitation flow and dedicated-server choices. Share the route that matches each friend’s edition; a co-op invite code and a dedicated-server listing are different destinations.

  3. Confirm you reached the intended world

Check that the friend arrives where expected and knows how to return next time. If joining fails, use the Palworld multiplayer connection checks before changing hosts or purchasing a rental in the hope it fixes an unrelated access problem.

If the first session works and the schedule suits everyone, keep that arrangement. You can make a more involved hosting decision when there is a concrete reason to do so.

Quick answers

Is Palworld single player or multiplayer?

Both. You can play solo, join a host-run co-op world, or play on a dedicated server. Multiplayer is optional, so you do not need a group to start.

How many people can play Palworld together?

Standard co-op supports 4 people including the host. Pocketpair advertises 32-player dedicated-server play, but check the capacity and available places on the specific server you join.

Is Palworld multiplayer on PS5?

Yes. PS5 supports online co-op and crossplay with the other supported platforms, and PS Plus is required for online play. PS5 players join dedicated servers through the Community server list.

Is Palworld multiplayer invite only?

No. Host-run co-op uses an invite code, while dedicated servers have their own connection routes and access rules. A server being visible in the Community list does not mean it is open without a password.

Do you need to rent a server to play Palworld with friends?

No. Built-in co-op needs no separate server rental, provided everyone has game access and any required console online membership. Renting is an optional way to run a dedicated world independently of a friend’s game.
