You will need

  • The full error message and affected platform or storefront
  • The current invite code or server connection details
  • Cooperation from the world host or server administrator
  • A backup before changing server configuration or saved data

If Palworld multiplayer is not working, first identify whether you are joining a friend’s co-op session or a dedicated server, then check who else cannot connect. Those two answers decide whether to investigate an invitation, an account, or the shared host. Repeating a failed join without changing or checking anything tells you very little. This guide gives you a symptom table and a short diagnostic route for Steam, Xbox, PS5, Game Pass PC, and Mac. The checks follow documentation and platform guidance; they do not assume one error message proves a particular cause. Keep the existing world intact while you investigate.

Match your Palworld multiplayer not working symptom#

Use the message as a starting point, then choose the check that fits your session. The phrases below are common reported wording or descriptions of behavior, not an official list of error codes with one guaranteed fix each.

What you see Check next Continue with
“Connection timed out” or “Failed to connect” Is the intended dedicated server running, and is the endpoint correct? Dedicated connection checks below
“Multiplayer functionality is currently unavailable” Service notices, sign-in, and multiplayer access for that account Service and platform checks
“Failed to host multiplayer session” Whether the host can start multiplayer after checking services and updates Co-op invitation steps
Invite code rejected Code from the current running session, available places, and Cross-Play Co-op invitation steps
Server missing from the list Community startup, server name, and permitted platforms Dedicated connection checks
Stuck loading after joining Whether everyone is affected, recent updates, and server errors at that time Evidence collection below
Disconnected during play Whether the host stopped, the server restarted, or only one connection dropped Scope the failure before changing settings
Version mismatch message Client and server builds against the applicable patch notice Update compatibility checks
Authentication error Signed-in account, platform services, and the complete error text Platform checks; involve the administrator
Progress missing after reconnecting Correct world and character, then the administrator’s saved-data records Preserve the world and collect evidence

Ask one other player to try the same destination. If they can enter while you cannot, begin with your client, account, and connection. If nobody can enter, investigate the host and shared services first. These comparisons narrow the search; they do not prove that every other component is healthy.

Also record when the problem began. A failure immediately after the host changed a password deserves a different first check from a failure affecting several platforms without any local changes. Change one thing at a time and repeat the same join attempt so you know which observation changed.

If everyone can join but movement or interactions remain delayed, follow the Palworld lag checks to separate rendering, network, and server simulation problems.

Check service notices and update compatibility first#

Check current service notices before editing a working configuration. Use Palworld’s status page for its listed services and Epic’s service status for relevant online-service incidents. On consoles, also check Xbox status or PlayStation Network status.

Read the affected service, incident time, and latest update. Yesterday’s social-media complaint and next week’s maintenance announcement do not establish an outage now. Equally, an operational dashboard does not test a private server under your friend’s desk. If a relevant incident is active, keep the error and timestamp, follow its updates, and retry after recovery rather than repeatedly changing passwords and network rules.

Next, have the host and affected players check for available updates through their own storefronts. A dedicated server needs its separate server installation updated too. Restart the updated client or server normally; closing the player’s game does not restart a separate server process.

Use compatible builds, not a rule that every displayed number must be identical. Pocketpair’s official patch announcements have explicitly kept crossplay working across platform-specific hotfixes with different version numbers. Read the notice for the relevant update before deciding that a numerical difference explains the failure.

After these checks, repeat one connection to the same world. If it still fails, keep both build numbers and storefront names for the administrator. “We both updated” is useful context, but the actual versions help someone check whether the server or one store is still on a different compatible release path.

Rebuild the co-op invitation without replacing the world#

For ordinary co-op, verify the host’s running session and its invitation before investigating dedicated-server ports. The host must remain online, and standard co-op has 4 places including that host. A fifth person needs a different arrangement; a fresh code cannot create another place.

  1. Host: select the existing group world

Return to the world-selection screen and select the world your friends already use. Open Change World Settings, enable Multiplayer, and enable Cross-Play for players on different platforms. Save the settings and load that world. These controls belong to the co-op host; a guest creating their own multiplayer world does not enable access to yours.

  2. Share the code from this running session

Open the host’s pause or Options menu and reveal the current invite code. Send it privately. Have the guest use Join Multiplayer Game (Invite Code) from the title screen and enter this code, rather than one copied from an earlier session. Menu presentation may differ by client, but the required destination is the running host’s invitation.

  3. Retry with one guest and check the result

Keep the host in the world while one friend joins. Confirm that the guest reaches the expected base and character. If the attempt fails, capture the full error on the affected device and check whether another friend can use the same fresh invitation. This separates a session-wide failure from one guest’s access problem.

If the host cannot create a multiplayer session at all, work through the service, sign-in, and update checks before asking every guest to change settings. If a guest drops when the host closes the game, that is the expected availability limit of co-op. The world has not become an independently running server.

Avoid turning this into a save experiment. There is no need to overwrite the existing world, remove player files, or repeatedly switch hosts just to test a fresh invitation. If you use a new disposable world as a comparison, label it clearly and retain the original. A successful test world narrows the problem but does not establish that the original save should be deleted.

Trace a dedicated connection from the server outward#

For a dedicated server, start with the running process and the correct joining route. Pocketpair’s connection instructions describe IP-and-port joining for supported clients and Community server selection. Xbox-family clients, including Microsoft Store PC, and PS5 need the Community route; Steam and Mac can join by IP and port.

  1. Confirm the intended server is actually running

Ask its administrator to check the server process or hosting controls and the latest startup output. Confirm the server name, available places, and join password. ServerPassword controls entry; AdminPassword grants administration and should not be distributed as a join password. A successful startup message still needs a real outside connection to prove reachability.

  2. Compare the listening port with the connection details

Pocketpair documents UDP 8211 as the default game port in its server requirements. Check the actual deployment if the administrator changed it. The launch argument below selects the listening port:

    text
    -port=8211

The launch-arguments reference distinguishes that from the advertised external community port. Changing PublicPort or -publicport does not move the listening socket. Router forwarding, the host firewall, any provider firewall, and container port mappings must agree with the intended UDP route. Do not open unrelated ports or disable the firewall to avoid finding the mismatched rule.

  3. Check Community listing and platform access

For console and Microsoft Store clients, the administrator should check community-server setup. Its startup argument is:

    text
    -publiclobby

The documented default platform list is:

    ini
    CrossplayPlatforms=(Steam,Xbox,PS5,Mac)

Check whether the active configuration deliberately excludes a friend’s platform. Preserve the configuration format and restart normally after an authorized change. A listing and a password serve different purposes: appearing in Community does not require removing the join password.

Finally, compare a connection from outside the host’s network with one inside it. Pocketpair notes that a router without hairpin NAT can interfere with local access through the public Community route. If outside friends connect and the host cannot, that difference is evidence to investigate, not a reason to rebuild everyone’s clients.

A TCP port probe does not establish that the UDP game route works. The useful end-to-end check is a player entering the intended world through the intended route. For installation details beyond this triage, follow the dedicated-server setup and route comparison.

Apply the checks for the affected platform#

Use the storefront as well as the device name when choosing your next check. “PC” includes different clients, and a successful Steam connection does not demonstrate that the Community route used by an Xbox friend works.

Client Account and client checks Dedicated-server route
Steam on Windows Correct signed-in account, available game updates, complete error text IP and port, or an appropriate listed server
Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass Correct Microsoft account and access to the game; updates through that store Community server list
Xbox Signed-in account, game access, applicable online multiplayer subscription, privacy or family restrictions Community server list
PS5 PSN sign-in, game access, PS Plus for online play, account restrictions Community server list
Mac Available client updates and compatible build; confirm the endpoint being used IP and port supported by the official guide

For co-op, return to the invitation steps regardless of which dedicated route appears in the table. Mixed platforms can play co-op when the host enables Cross-Play. Do not diagnose “different consoles” as an automatic incompatibility.

On PS5, Sony documents Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection in its connection support guidance. A passing device test is useful, but it does not prove a particular Palworld server is reachable. For Xbox family restrictions, have the account owner review the applicable controls rather than sharing credentials or substituting someone else’s account.

If only one PC client fails, file verification through its launcher can be a later check, especially after a damaged or interrupted update. Do not treat it as the first response when all friends lose the same server at once. The Xbox and PC crossplay checks cover that pairing in more detail; keep the focus on the route your actual storefront supports.

Collect evidence before touching saves or reinstalling#

Send the administrator a small reproducible report before attempting broad repairs. Start with what failed and when, then include what still works. “Steam guest joins, PS5 guest cannot find the same server” is substantially more useful than “multiplayer is broken.”

Include the following details in one message:

  • Platform, storefront, and actual client build for each affected player.
  • Co-op, official server, self-hosted dedicated server, or rented dedicated server.
  • Exact error text, a screenshot if available, and the time with its time zone.
  • Whether one player or everyone fails, and whether a second destination works.
  • Server build, relevant startup errors, and changes immediately before the problem.
  • Checks already attempted and their results, including successful comparisons.

Share passwords and access tokens with nobody in a public report. Redact them from configuration snippets, screenshots, and logs; send connection details privately when the operator needs them. If you do not administer the server, ask its owner to retrieve relevant log excerpts instead of guessing a universal log location across Windows, Linux, containers, and managed panels.

For a suspected game defect, use Pocketpair’s Palworld report form. For a rented server’s failed startup or unavailable endpoint, contact that provider with the same evidence. These are different owners of different parts of the connection. Preserve the report’s original observations even if a later restart temporarily clears the symptom; that history helps when the failure returns.

Change hosts only when the failure follows the host#

Consider a hosting change when the repeated failure is the host’s availability or the network you are asking it to serve from. Co-op closes with its host. A dedicated server on a sleeping home PC also becomes unavailable. A home connection that cannot provide the required inbound path needs a different network arrangement, not another guest reinstall.

Free co-op remains sensible for a small group that plays together and can reliably join. A maintained home server also works when someone wants to own the machine and network upkeep. First name the recurring job you want to remove: keeping a computer awake, maintaining external access, or administering updates and backups.

A managed rental can move those responsibilities to a provider where its service includes them. It cannot fix a platform outage, remove an account restriction, or make incompatible client releases compatible. Renting a bare VPS also leaves you with server administration, so check what management actually includes.

If home availability and network maintenance are the recurring obstacles, review Palworld hosting availability. Game Hosting currently uses a waitlist; joining it does not provision a server. Keep the original world and its backups until any move is verified. The useful finish line is that your intended players can reconnect to the correct world, not that you have purchased a different place for an unresolved error to appear.

Quick answers

Why can't my friend join my Palworld server?

First distinguish a co-op invite from a dedicated-server connection. Check the current code or endpoint, host availability, compatible builds, available places, and the joining route supported by your friend’s platform.

Is the Palworld multiplayer server down?

Check Palworld’s service status and the relevant platform status at the time of the failure. A healthy dashboard does not establish that your friend’s private server is running or reachable.

How do I turn multiplayer on in Palworld?

The co-op host selects the world, opens Change World Settings, and enables Multiplayer before loading it. Enable Cross-Play for a mixed-platform group, then share the invite code from the running session.

Do I need to open port 27015 for Palworld multiplayer?

Do not treat it as a universal requirement. Pocketpair documents UDP 8211 as the default dedicated-server game port; use the actual listening port configured for your deployment. Ordinary co-op invites are a separate route.

Should I reinstall Palworld to fix a connection timeout?

Check the host, connection route, service notices, and update compatibility first. A timeout alone does not show that the installation is damaged; protect your saves before repair or reinstall work.
