You will need

  • Valheim and the devices your crew uses to play
  • The times your friends need the world to be online
  • A person willing to own the world and its backups
  • A PC or server machine if you plan to self-host

Yes, you can play Valheim without paying a server-hosting bill, but “free Valheim server hosting” can mean very different things: a session one friend opens, a dedicated process on a PC you already own, a credit-funded host, or a limited cloud tier. Every route still assigns the work to someone. This guide compares who keeps the world available, what can interrupt it, and how to check whether the saved money is worth the maintenance.

Which free Valheim server hosting route fits your crew?#

If you are considering a paid host’s limited trial instead, use our Valheim server free-trial checklist to compare the timer, access limits and exit terms.

If the crew needs its world online when the usual operator is away, we recommend Game Hosting’s Valheim service as a paid continuity option. Its game panel includes settings and scheduled restarts, and its three free backup slots can be restored, downloaded or locked. The Squad plan is $11.99 per month for 4 GB, with four players recommended; that is a clear monthly bill, not a free server. If zero dollars is a hard limit, use the routes below and name the person responsible for each one.

Route Hosting invoice What someone still has to do Main catch
In-game session $0 Keep the host playing while the group uses that world Friends cannot treat it like an always-on world
Dedicated process on your PC $0 to a host Keep the machine, server process and network available; update and back up the world Power, hardware and caretaker time still cost something
Ad-funded provider $0 according to its offer Use the provider’s app and learn its start/boost rules The public offer may not explain when the server stops or how long saves remain
Credit-funded provider $0 if earned credits cover it Claim credits and keep enough in the balance The world may stop when credits run out
Cloud free tier $0 only inside eligible limits Configure and maintain a VM, network and compatible game files Region capacity, architecture, idle rules and billing conditions apply

These routes are not interchangeable. A listen session can work for a regular evening crew. A spare PC can support independent play if somebody maintains it. A provider or cloud account moves the machine elsewhere, but it does not automatically settle world ownership, backup access or ongoing work. Offers checked October 5, 2026; no provider account was created, server rented or world restore tested for this comparison.

Use an in-game session when your schedules overlap#

The simplest no-invoice route is for one friend to start the world in Valheim and invite the others when they play. Everyone still uses that player’s session, so this is a good fit when the group usually meets together and the host is happy to stay in the game.

It does not create a separate always-on server. If the host closes the session or cannot play, friends do not have an independent world process to join. Agree on a session time and make sure the world is saved before everyone leaves. If the group wants to explore during different hours, this route saves money by limiting access rather than by making the world continuously available.

Crossplay is a separate question from hosting cost. Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ explains how to share a join code between platforms. Confirm that the option appears for the host and that each friend can join from the actual device they use; a successful join is more useful than assuming every account, edition and setting is identical.

Run the dedicated server on hardware you already own#

The free dedicated-server program separates the world process from a player’s in-game session. Iron Gate’s official manual says to install “Valheim Dedicated Server” from Steam Library > Tools. It uses start_headless_server.bat on Windows or start_server.sh on Linux. The computer running that process must stay on and connected when friends want to play.

The manual also distinguishes two connection routes. Without -crossplay, Valheim uses its Steam backend and the default ports are UDP 2456–2457; players outside the home network generally need router forwarding. With -crossplay, Valheim uses a relay, so router forwarding is not required. The relay does not support joining by the server’s local or loopback IP. See our Valheim relay and no-port-forwarding options if this is the part stopping your setup.

Home hardware avoids a monthly server invoice, but it does not maintain itself. Someone still handles game updates, restarts, firewall or router changes, world copies and outages while the operator is away. A gaming PC that sleeps overnight will not cover a friend who wants to log in then. A spare machine is useful only if its owner can leave it running, connect it reliably and keep the world safe.

Screen free hosted servers for the catch#

Some free offers move the server onto someone else’s infrastructure and fund it another way. Their terms matter more than the word “free.” As of October 5, 2026, Squadnox’s Valheim page said its service is ad-funded and managed through its app; it also described a “boost server” step without explaining the boost’s duration or availability rules on that page. Ask those questions before moving your only world there.

AxentHost describes a different model: credits pay for memory by the hour. Its published rate is five credits per 1 GB-hour, so a 3 GB world uses 15 credits an hour. Its page says the free website claim gives 15 credits an hour. The numbers match exactly, leaving no hourly margin for a higher memory setting or a missed claim. Its own help text says servers stop when credits run out and files remain; treat that as the provider’s statement, not a tested backup or retention guarantee.

Check before you move a world Why it matters
Does the server stop when nobody is playing, or only when a boost/credit ends? “Always online” and “available when we play” are different schedules.
How do you download the world, and how long are copies kept? A live server is not an exit plan.
Does free access require ads, hourly claims or an app? Those become recurring chores for the account owner.
Can the real crew join on its mix of platforms? A provider’s general compatibility claim is not your group’s join test.

Neither provider’s web page establishes independent uptime, successful world recovery or compatibility for every crew. Treat advertised CPU, memory and reliability statements as provider claims. Do not put an established campaign on a service until one person has confirmed export and backup rules and the group has tested a separate copy.

Treat a cloud free tier as a project, not a one-click server#

Cloud companies may include a time-limited trial and a separate set of resources that remain free if the account and usage stay within their limits. Those are different offers. Oracle’s current Free Tier overview distinguishes its promotional trial from Always Free resources. A trial has an end date; moving to a paid account can create billable usage.

Oracle’s Always Free resource page describes its A1 compute as ARM, limited to a total of 2 OCPUs and 12 GB in the tenancy’s home region. Free capacity may not be available when you try to provision it. Oracle also says it may reclaim eligible Always Free instances after seven days if CPU, network and, for A1, memory use all remain below its thresholds. Its budget alerts are soft limits, checked every 24 hours, rather than a hard spending cap.

Those numbers describe a cloud allowance, not a verified Valheim setup. Iron Gate’s Linux server instructions do not establish that a current ARM64 server binary is available or that it will run on an A1 instance. Check the current server build’s architecture, regional capacity, billing controls and backup procedure before attempting it. This article deliberately does not give Oracle commands or promise that its current ARM shapes run Valheim.

Protect the world before you trust a free route#

Choose one world owner and one backup person before sharing access. Ask how each route lets you export the world, where a separate copy will live, how often you will make it and how long the service keeps its own copies. If a provider only tells you that backups exist, ask who can download them and what happens if you lose access to the account.

Before moving a campaign, test the export on a duplicate world. Confirm that another machine or account can load it, then keep the current world untouched until the crew approves the copy. Do not mistake a running server, a successful upload or a “backup complete” message for proof that you can recover from a broken save or lost login.

Our Valheim hosting buyer guide has a crew worksheet for assigning export, recovery and account access. A free route can be perfectly reasonable when someone owns those tasks and everyone knows when the world is available. If nobody has agreed to take them, the missing responsibility is part of the cost.

Count the hours and know when to switch#

Give the free route a week-long trial with the actual crew before you move the main world. Record when friends need access, how often the caretaker must start the session or claim credits, and what interruptions occurred. For a home PC, estimate only the electricity you add: measure the server’s average watts, multiply by the hours it runs, divide by 1,000, then multiply by your own electricity price per kWh. No universal monthly cost is reliable without your machine, schedule and utility rate.

For credit hosting, compare the hours the crew actually plays with the work required to maintain the balance. For a cloud VM, include configuration, security updates, backups and the possibility that a free shape or region is unavailable. Our Valheim monthly server cost guide covers the paid side of that calculation; do not count a short trial as a permanent monthly price.

Keep the free route if its schedule, access and recovery plan fit the crew. Reconsider a paid service when the operator no longer wants to keep a PC online, watch credits or administer a cloud machine. The choice is not “free versus crossplay”: the choice is which person and which system will keep the world usable.

Quick answers

Can you host a Valheim server for free?

Yes. You can share an in-game session, run the dedicated server on hardware you already own, or try a free provider or cloud allowance. Each route still has an availability, upkeep, capacity or billing condition.

Can Xbox friends join a free Valheim server?

Yes, if the server uses crossplay; the official relay avoids router port forwarding. Xbox can join a dedicated server but cannot run the dedicated server process itself.

Does a free cloud tier keep a Valheim world online forever?

Not automatically. Check game-binary compatibility, regional capacity, idle rules, trial expiry, account billing and world backups before you rely on a cloud VM.
