No—Vintage Story is not sold on Steam. Anego’s official FAQ says a Steam release is not planned for the near future, while leaving the door open for a possible release later. You can buy through the official store routes, download from your game account, and play on a supported Windows, macOS or Linux computer. Each player needs their own account. Here is what to check before you buy or try to join friends, including the current limits around consoles and Steam Deck.
Is Vintage Story on Steam?#
No. As of October 9, 2026, Vintage Story is not available to buy on Steam. The official FAQ says the developers are not going to Steam in the near future. It describes reasons for maintaining their own store, account system and mod database, but also says a later release could make sense. There is no announced Steam release date, so treat “not on Steam today” as the useful answer instead of guessing what the team might do next.
This also does not mean the game is unavailable or that every Steam feature is part of it. Vintage Story has its own account area for downloads and its own ModDB for mods; it is not Minecraft, and Steam Workshop is not its mod catalog. The game can run on a Steam Deck with configuration, according to the FAQ, but that does not make it a Steam store title. The Deck setup is a separate question from buying the game; keep an eye on the platform-specific guide when it is published.
The FAQ’s explanation is about distribution and the way Anego runs the game, not a restriction on multiplayer. It cites Steam’s revenue share, update and refund rules, and its own account, store and mod-database systems as reasons to stay independent for now. Those are the developer’s stated reasons, not a promise that Steam will never be considered. The same FAQ says an eventual release could make sense, but it gives no date or commitment.
Where can you buy Vintage Story?#
Use a purchase route linked from Vintage Story’s current official store page. The page lists its own store, the Humble Widget and Humble Store, plus a local-payment partner for Latin America. It also warns that third-party resellers may be scams and says the stores listed on its site are the official sellers. Its old itch.io reference is crossed out, so do not treat itch.io as a current route.
| Official route | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Vintage Story store | Buy a game account or a giftable account from Anego’s site. |
| Humble Widget or Humble Store | A purchase still leads to the game account manager to redeem the key and create an account. |
| Latin America local-payment partner | The official store links to a regional partner for local payment options. |
Prices and payment options can vary by region and change over time, so check the route you will use instead of relying on an old screenshot or a search snippet. If a store is not linked from the official site, the current store page does not confirm it as an official seller. Do not enter your account details on a reseller page just because it appears above the official store in search results.
On Anego’s store route, the purchase sends a game key that you redeem to set up an account. The Humble purchase instructions describe the same account-manager step after checkout. If you are buying for a friend, the official giftable account is issued as a redeemable link, so the recipient can register their own account instead of borrowing yours.
What platforms can run Vintage Story?#
Vintage Story currently lists PC versions for 64-bit Windows, macOS and Linux. The official system requirements specify Windows 10 or newer and macOS 13 or newer; they also say Windows ARM chips are unsupported. The official stable-download API currently lists Linux and Windows clients, plus macOS x64 and ARM64 builds.
| Device or system | Current support |
|---|---|
| Windows PC | Windows 10 or newer, 64-bit. Windows ARM is unsupported. |
| Mac | macOS 13 or newer; current downloads include x64 and ARM64 builds. |
| Linux PC | Listed as a supported client platform. The current requirements page says the client needs .NET 10. |
| Xbox, PlayStation or Switch | No current console release is listed. The FAQ says the developers hope to reach consoles someday, not that a version is available now. |
| Steam Deck | The FAQ says it runs with some configuration. This is not a Steam store release or a setup guide. |
The game is therefore not a fit for a group that only has consoles today. If your group has a PC player and a console player, the PC owner cannot solve that platform gap by choosing a different server. A Linux or Mac install may also need the official .NET 10 runtime instructions; the Mac and Linux setup details belong to their own platform guides.
The current download list also includes an Apple-silicon mac-arm64 client, so do not follow an older Mac post that assumes every modern Mac must use an Intel build through Rosetta. Choose the Mac package that matches your hardware in the official account area. Windows on ARM is a different case: the requirements page says those chips are unsupported. Players on Windows, Mac and Linux can share a server when their game and the server use compatible network versions; this is PC operating-system crossplay, not a console version.
Does each player need their own Vintage Story account?#
Yes. Each person who wants to download and start the game needs their own game account. The single-account store listing explains that a purchase gives you a key to set up an account. The giftable account and Family Pack provide additional accounts for other players; they are separate game accounts, not a shared login for a group.
Keep the game account separate from a forum account. Vintage Story’s official account area says the client uses its own account system, and the store says you need a game account to download the client and updates. When you are helping a friend get started, make sure they redeem their own account and can sign in before you plan a multiplayer session. Sharing one login is not a substitute for everyone having access to the game.
For the server budget that comes after the game purchase, see our Vintage Story server cost breakdown, which separates per-player accounts from recurring hosting and home electricity.
If a password reset or download link fails, check that you are using the game account page rather than changing a forum password. The two account systems are separate. For a family, Anego’s four-account pack provides four game accounts; it does not turn one account into four simultaneous player identities.
How do you download and update Vintage Story without Steam?#
After purchase, use the official client area to create or sign in to a game account and download the client. Its stable version API currently marks 1.22.7 as the latest stable release and lists the available client builds. Check that API or your account area when you install; a version number in an old guide can become stale.
The official requirements page calls for .NET 10 on Linux and macOS clients. For multiplayer, check which version the server is running before you update: the client and server need a compatible network version. If the group suddenly cannot connect after an update, ask the server owner for the version it supports before reinstalling or changing account settings. The official dedicated-server guide covers server setup; this page does not promise that an update will happen on Steam or automatically match every server.
You do not need to install through Steam to stay current. The stable API lists separate download builds by operating system and marks which release is current. A server owner can pin or delay a server update, so ask before updating if you are joining a private group; for public servers, use the version the server operator supports. The precise compatibility range can change with a release, which is why this guide points to the live API instead of copying a patch number into a permanent rule.
How do friends play Vintage Story without Steam?#
Friends join from Vintage Story’s own Multiplayer menu using the server’s address. Steam’s friends list is not needed for the documented connection path. The official dedicated-server guide gives this short route:
Open Multiplayer
From the game’s main menu, select Multiplayer.Add the server
Choose Add new server and enter the address supplied by the host.Save and join
Save the entry, select it from the multiplayer list and follow any password or mod prompts the server provides.
A world opened to a local network and a dedicated server are different ways to play; in either case, the host must make the correct connection information available to the group. If you want a shared world to stay online while no player’s PC is hosting it, compare Vintage Story server hosting options and see the Vintage Story server plans. Buying a game account and choosing where a world runs are separate decisions. For a quick map of the connection options, see how to play Vintage Story with friends.
For a nearby friend on the same home network, a LAN world can be the simplest way to try multiplayer. Friends connecting from outside that network need an internet-reachable host or a dedicated server and its address; the official self-hosting guide describes those routes. Renting a server is optional, and it cannot make an unsupported console client compatible or replace a player’s game account.
