Best Vintage Story Server Hosting: How to Choose a Host
Best Vintage Story server hosting comes down to version control, ModDB support, clear RAM, backups and a region your group can reach. Compare hosts fairly.
You will need
- Each player has a Vintage Story account and a supported PC operating system
- Your group knows its intended game version and mod list
- Identify any existing .vcdbs world and the regions where players connect from
The best Vintage Story server hosting depends on your group’s mods, player locations, backup needs and the resources a provider actually publishes. This dated shortlist compares Game Hosting, Host Havoc, CreeperHost, Something Unique and Anego’s official service using their current product pages checked October 7, 2026. It is a documented feature comparison, not a performance ranking: we did not rent every plan, benchmark worlds, contact support as customers or test a restore. Start with platform and version fit, then compare the controls you will use. If you are still choosing between a home PC, a VPS and a managed server, first compare renting, home hosting and VPS routes.
If you are still looking for a no-cost route, compare these free Vintage Story server options and check when each one stops or deletes a world before choosing a host.
If you are checking where to buy the game before comparing hosts, our guide to where to buy and play Vintage Story explains the official routes and why each player needs an account. If your group is still choosing between a LAN session, a home server and a rented world, start with this overview of how to play Vintage Story with friends.
We recommend Game Hosting for groups who value published RAM and CPU details, ModDB and version controls, and three included backup slots. Its Vintage Story plans list Ryzen 9 9900X hardware with four threads and a Dallas, Texas location; the browser file manager does not include SFTP.
If you are organizing staff, claims and shared settlements, use this more focused community-server hosting checklist alongside the general host comparison.
If your main decision is what the rental costs alongside each player’s game purchase—or whether to keep a PC on at home—see our Vintage Story server cost breakdown.
Confirm the server fits your group#
Vintage Story is available for 64-bit Windows 10 or newer, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux. The official requirements and purchase pages currently list PC versions; no console release is listed as of October 7, 2026. Each player needs their own game account from vintagestory.at. Do not disable authentication to make a rented server easier to join.
Keep the client and dedicated server on compatible game versions. The official stable API listed 1.22.7 on October 7, 2026, and its current server guide says versions 1.22 and newer need .NET 10 when self-hosting. The guide also documents the default port, 42420, over both TCP and UDP for current versions, and says dedicated servers have a whitelist by default. If you manage your own server, confirm the exact account name, grant access with the documented whitelist command, and verify commands with /help because the wiki’s command list may lag behind a release. Our owner’s Vintage Story command reference groups the live 1.22.7 syntax by task and flags forms that no longer match current help. The serverconfig.json reference explains the common settings and why current command help matters. A managed host should make the version and access state visible before your group tries to connect. For the separate TCP and UDP rules and route checks, see the Vintage Story server port guide.
Ask what resources and location the plan provides#
Do not compare slot counts as if they were memory. Ask for the RAM assigned to the plan, CPU model and thread allocation, storage, region, and whether the player count is a recommendation or a hard cap. Anego’s dedicated-server guide gives a rough starting estimate of 1 GB plus 300 MB per player and four CPU threads; treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee for a world with mods, exploration or a larger group. Our guide to how much RAM a Vintage Story server needs shows how to apply that estimate without treating a slot label as a memory measure.
The location matters to every player, not just the server owner. Ask where the selected plan will run and have the group test the route or trial the actual service. A host’s global location list does not mean every game plan is available in every region.
Write down the answers for the exact plan, billing term and region you intend to buy. A general feature page may describe several tiers, and a support reply about one tier does not automatically apply to another.
Compare the best Vintage Story server hosting shortlist#
The current offer lists 4 GB, 8 GB and 12 GB plans, a Vintage Story ModDB manager, world creation and upload, player whitelist and admin controls, and game-version controls. These are documented product features, not a claim that a particular world has been benchmarked or restored successfully.
| Provider | What its current offer is suited to | Check before you buy |
|---|---|---|
| Game Hosting | Published RAM tiers and CPU details, ModDB controls, three included backup slots, and a listed Dallas location | No SFTP; this Vintage Story offer lists Dallas. Review backup retention and recovery steps for your own needs. |
| Host Havoc | A slot-based offer with a Vintage Story mod manager, FTP and a broader location list | Its current game page does not show numerical RAM or per-plan CPU allocation. Confirm what your selected slot plan includes. |
| CreeperHost | A more configurable Vintage Story panel, including ModDB and world-management controls, with location choice | Compare the exact Eco or Premium plan: their resources and backup terms differ. Ask how the selected plan handles recovery. |
| Something Unique Hosting | A Vintage Story panel advertising ModDB dependency checks and version controls, plus several locations | The current product page describes different access methods than older third-party notes. Confirm file access, plan resources and backup responsibility directly. |
| Anego official hosting | A simple in-game managed option for a small vanilla group in Central Europe | The current offer is 8 slots, does not support third-party mods or world uploads, and does not publish RAM or CPU. |
This is a selected shortlist, not a market-wide award. Features and plan terms can change; the provider pages linked above were reviewed October 7, 2026. Do not treat an advertised backup slot as proof of a particular retention period or successful restore. Before paying, ask where backups are stored, how long they remain available, whether you can download them, and how to recover a copy if a world or mod update goes wrong.
Check ModDB support against your exact mod list#
Vintage Story mods come from its official ModDB, not Minecraft’s ecosystem or Steam Workshop. Before choosing a host, check a release’s game-version tags, whether it runs on the server, client or both, and which dependencies it needs. A mod tagged for a different game release may not work just because its name looks familiar. Check that the host exposes missing dependencies, incompatible versions and withdrawn releases before you start the server.
Server-side and universal mods can be offered to players by the game when they join; client-only mods are each player’s responsibility. Ask whether the provider’s manager handles dependencies and communicates the server’s mod list clearly. Our Vintage Story mods reference guide explains the side labels and what players should expect; the ModDB installation walkthrough covers server setup. If you recommend a specific mod elsewhere, credit its author and link to the ModDB entry.
Check world uploads, backups and update control before moving#
Vintage Story .vcdbs world saves use SQLite. The dedicated-server guide says to stop the server before copying a world file. Before uploading, replacing, updating or restoring a world, make a separate backup and verify that you can identify and retrieve it. Ask the host to explain the actual restore path, which copy it will replace and whether the server stays stopped during the operation. We have not tested restoration on the plans in this shortlist, so an advertised backup feature is not evidence that a recovery will succeed. Save the provider’s answer with the world’s current version and mod list so another group admin can follow the same recovery steps if the owner is unavailable.
If you already have a solo save and want to move it, follow our steps to upload a single-player world to a Vintage Story server.
Game version changes and mod changes can affect a shared world. Check whether you can choose when to update, whether the host warns about mod compatibility or withdrawals, and how to return to the previous version if your group’s mod set is not ready. Keep a copy of the current world and a written mod list before making a change.
Compare regions, billing and support terms#
Compare the renewal amount and billing period, cancellation process, trial or refund rules, support scope and server region before you commit. A trial can help your group test access from its own networks; it does not prove performance for every world or mod set. Avoid comparing a per-slot price with a per-GB plan unless you also know what memory and CPU each offer includes.
For a region decision, have everyone join the same server from home and compare the actual game experience. Our guide to Vintage Story server location and ping explains that test and its limits.
Ask support one practical question before a long commitment: how would you download a backup, restore a stopped .vcdbs world, or keep a modded server on a specific game version? A clear, specific answer is more useful than a generic uptime badge when you are choosing who will help maintain a shared world. Before committing to a save, also agree on the Vintage Story world settings for a multiplayer server, especially respawning and death rules.
Pick the host that fits your group’s priorities#
Choose a managed plan that discloses the resources you need, runs in a location your group can reach, and gives you a recovery path you understand. Game Hosting is worth comparing if published RAM and CPU, backup controls and its listed Dallas location match your priorities. Anego’s official in-game service is a simpler fit for vanilla play in Central Europe; Host Havoc, CreeperHost and Something Unique each advertise Vintage Story-specific mod or world controls worth checking against your own list. Confirm the current terms and recovery procedure before moving an established world.

Quick answers
Which server host is best for Vintage Story?
It depends on your group. Game Hosting is a fit if you value published memory and CPU details, three included backup slots and its listed Dallas location; the official Anego service favors simple in-game setup for a small vanilla group in Europe.
What should I check before renting a modded Vintage Story server?
Confirm the exact game version, whether each mod is server-side, client-side or universal, its version tag and dependencies, and how players receive server mods. Check what the host shows when a mod is incompatible or withdrawn.
Is Anego’s official hosting better than a third-party host?
Anego’s official service is simpler to manage in-game, but its current offer is limited to vanilla play and Central Europe. A third-party host may suit a modded group, an existing world or players elsewhere; compare its published resources and recovery process.
