You will need

  • Know how many people will play and whether each already owns a Vintage Story account
  • Use your utility rate and measured computer draw to estimate home electricity

The monthly cost of a Vintage Story server depends on whether you rent one or keep a computer running at home. A hosted plan currently starts at $7.99 per month, while self-hosting has no separate server-software charge but can add electricity, network work and maintenance. Every player also needs a separate game account: Vintage Story currently lists the US price at $24 per account. That purchase is usually a one-time cost, not part of the server’s monthly bill.

We recommend Game Hosting to organizers who want published monthly prices and memory by tier, plus three free backup slots in the panel; see Game Hosting’s Vintage Story plans. That is a practical option to compare, not a claim that it is the cheapest way to run every world; Game Hosting publishes this guide and sells the service. For a wider host checklist, see how to choose Vintage Story server hosting. The rest of this guide separates game purchases from ongoing server costs so you can calculate the total for your group.

What does a Vintage Story server cost each month?#

The recurring server bill is different from the game purchase. Here are current listed prices checked October 11, 2026:

Option Published price What the price means
Self-host on a computer you already own No separate server-software fee Add measured electricity and account for uptime, network setup and maintenance.
Game Hosting Squad $7.99/month 4 GB memory; listed as playing well with 6 players.
Game Hosting Party $15.99/month 8 GB memory; listed as playing well with 10 players.
Game Hosting Clan $23.99/month 12 GB memory; listed as playing well with 20 players.
Vintage Story Simple Server Hosting €10 per 30 days Official 8-slot offer, VAT included; it is priced by slots, not published RAM.

“Plays well with” is a recommendation on the plan page, not a hard player cap or a promise for every world. Mods, exploration and settings can change resource use. The official Anego offer is a separate comparison: its 8-slot price cannot be compared directly with a plan advertised by memory, and its current product listing describes a vanilla service in Central Europe.

If you are unsure which memory tier to price, our Vintage Story RAM guide explains the official starting estimate and why it is not a performance guarantee.

If your first question is whether you can avoid a monthly server bill, see these free options and their uptime and world-retention limits.

Game Hosting lists a 30% discount for yearly billing. If that offer and the displayed monthly prices apply at checkout, the arithmetic for 12 months is $67.12, $134.32 or $201.52 before any applicable tax, respectively. Check the selected term and the amount due before paying; the live checkout is authoritative. The plans also include three backup slots, with backup controls in the panel. That describes included features, not a tested restore outcome.

How much does Vintage Story cost for each player?#

The official site currently advertises Vintage Story at $24 in the US ($20 in the euro price shown by the store). The purchase provides a key for a game account, and the official account product page says an account is required to download and start the game. Each person joining a multiplayer world needs their own account. Treat this as an upfront game cost, separate from server rent. Our guide to where to buy Vintage Story explains the account and official purchase routes.

At the currently advertised US single-account price, buying for a group would be:

Players Game accounts at $24 each Example server tier Illustrative first year*
2 $48 Squad, $7.99/month $143.88
5 $120 Party, $15.99/month $311.88
20 $480 Clan, $23.99/month $767.88

*Illustration only: it adds 12 monthly list-price payments for the example tier to single-account purchases, before taxes and any account bundle, promotion or billing change. The tier examples follow the page’s “plays well with” recommendations, not a guarantee that a world will perform a certain way.

The official store also lists a four-account Family Pack for €65 including VAT. Store prices and checkout totals can vary by currency and region, so use the price shown to your group at purchase rather than converting the euro amount into an assumed US price. Players still need separate accounts even when a bundle is used.

How do I calculate home server electricity?#

Use the computer’s measured power draw at the wall, not its power-supply rating or a generic estimate. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported an average residential electricity price of 18.31 cents per kilowatt-hour for July 2026. That national figure is context, not your rate: use the energy price on your own bill, including any relevant variable charges.

Monthly electricity = watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per day × days × dollars per kWh.

For a server running all day every day over a 30-day month, an illustrative 50-watt draw at $0.1831/kWh would cost about $6.59. At 100 watts, the same calculation is about $13.18. These wattages are examples to show the math, not measured Vintage Story server results. A plug-in meter can help measure a desktop or small server under the workload you expect. If the computer would be on anyway, estimate the additional draw caused by leaving it running rather than charging the world for the machine’s entire baseline use.

Home power is only one line in the comparison. If the computer must stay on while friends are away, include any extra cooling or hardware purchase separately, and decide whether router/firewall setup and keeping the world updated are acceptable. The official self-hosting guide explains the PC and network requirements; it does not make a home server’s electricity or time free.

Which option costs less for your group?#

Compare like with like: the first-year cost of game accounts plus server access, then the recurring cost after everyone owns the game. If all players already have accounts, remove that one-time purchase from both options. If some need the game, the $24 US list price per single account can outweigh several months of hosting, so show it as a separate upfront line rather than presenting it as a monthly server fee.

For two people, the $7.99 Squad list price totals $95.88 for a year before tax; adding two new US-price game accounts makes the illustrative first-year total $143.88. For five, the $15.99 Party example is $191.88 for a year plus $120 for five accounts. For twenty, the $23.99 Clan example is $287.88 for a year plus $480 for twenty single accounts. These plan/player examples follow the site’s recommendations; they are not capacity guarantees or hard limits.

Self-hosting may have the lowest additional cash cost when a suitable computer is already on and its extra power draw is small. If it must run around the clock, compare the meter-based electricity estimate with rent, then include the value of setup and upkeep to your group. A rental plan trades that home administration for a recurring bill and provider controls; compare published resources, location, backups and cancellation terms. Game Hosting’s published tiers make that monthly comparison straightforward, but its price is not an all-in first-year price because players buy their game accounts separately.

What should you check before choosing a cheap Vintage Story server?#

Before paying, write down the number of people likely to play at once, whether everyone already owns the game, and the server options your world needs. Then check:

  • Billing unit: Is the plan sold by RAM, player slots or another measure? Don’t treat eight slots as equivalent to 8 GB.
  • Term and total due: Compare monthly billing with the exact yearly checkout amount, including taxes and introductory discounts only if they apply to your account.
  • Resources and location: Check the memory and CPU details published for the plan, plus where that specific server will run.
  • Backups and recovery controls: Find out how many backups are retained and what restore or download controls exist. A listed backup feature does not prove a restore has been tested for your world.
  • Your workload: A large world, frequent exploration or mods may change the resources you need. A player-count recommendation is not a performance test.
  • Self-hosting requirements: Measure wall power and include the time and network setup needed to keep a home world accessible.

This is a budgeting guide, not a performance comparison. We did not benchmark plans, measure a home computer’s power use, or test world restoration. Use your own meter and the provider’s current checkout for decisions that depend on those results.

Frequently asked questions#

Is self-hosting Vintage Story free?

The official game account purchase includes server software for a self-hosted server, so there is no separate official server-software license fee. The computer’s electricity, hardware, internet arrangement and time still have costs.

Does every player need to buy Vintage Story?

Yes. Each player needs their own Vintage Story game account. The official site currently lists the US single-account price at $24; the price and any bundle should be confirmed at checkout.

What is the cheapest Vintage Story server price?

Self-hosting can avoid a rental charge if you already have a suitable computer, but calculate its extra electricity and decide how you value setup and upkeep. Game Hosting currently lists a hosted tier from $7.99 per month; prices and billing terms can change.

Does a Vintage Story server cost extra beyond the game?

The game purchase includes server software for self-hosting. Renting a managed server is a separate recurring expense, and each player still needs a game account.

How much electricity does a Vintage Story server use?

It depends on the computer and workload. Measure the draw at the wall, then multiply kilowatts by hours and your electricity rate; do not use a generic wattage as if it were a measured result.
