Pieces within 10 m of where you rest
Only the best piece of each kind counts; pieces with no kind count once each.
How comfort is counted
- Comfort starts at 1. Being in shelter adds 1; out of shelter, no piece counts.
- Every comfort piece within 10 meters counts, but only the best one of each kind: one fire, one bed, one seat, one table, one rug and so on.
- Two of the same piece count once. Pieces with no kind (the maypole, the Yule tree) count once each.
- A fire gives comfort only while it’s lit.
- Rested lasts 8:00 plus 1 minute per comfort level above 1.
- Shelter means a roof over you and walls around you (the game wants most of the space around you covered).

Quick answers
How does comfort work in Valheim?
You start at comfort 1. In shelter you get +1, plus every comfort piece within 10 meters of you. Pieces come in kinds (fires, beds, seats, tables, rugs, banners and more) and only the best piece of each kind counts, so a Raven Throne (3) and a stool give 3, not 4. Pieces with no kind count once each.
How long does Rested last?
8:00 at comfort 1, plus a minute for each comfort level above it: 17:00 at comfort 10, 29:00 at 22.
How do I get the Rested buff?
Sit down near a fire, or stand near one in shelter, out of the cold and the wet, with no enemy noticing you: you become Resting, and after a short while Rested. Waking up after a night in bed also makes you Rested. Comfort sets how long it lasts, and comfort pieces only count in shelter.
What is the max comfort in Valheim?
22 with the pieces you can always build, 24 with seasonal decorations, which you can only build during their events.
Does a fire need to be lit for comfort?
Yes. A fire only gives comfort while it burns; one that ran out of wood counts as zero. Untick “is lit” in the calculator to see the difference.
